Acoustic Detection And Classification Of Microchiroptera Using Machine Learning: Lessons Learned From Automatic Speech Recognition, Mark D. Skowronski, John G. Harris
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Current automatic acoustic detection and classification of microchiroptera utilize global features of individual calls (i.e., duration, bandwidth, frequency extrema), an approach that stems from expert knowledge of call sonograms. This approach parallels the acoustic phonetic paradigm of human automatic speech recognition (ASR), which relied on expert knowledge to account for variations in canonical linguistic units. ASR research eventually shifted from acoustic phonetics to machine learning, primarily because of the superior ability of machine learning to account for signal variation. To compare machine learning with conventional methods of detection and classification, nearly 3000 search-phase calls were hand labeled from recordings of …

Starting Conversations With Content Area Peers [Out Of The Box], Jenelle Reeves
Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications
I offer three principles to guide you as you initiate conversations with content area peers: make it personal, make it positive, and make a connection.
Considering the importance of the relationship between ESOL professionals and content teachers, it is critically important to consider how you engage colleagues in conversation about effective English language learner inclusion. If you open your conversations with content area peers in a positive way, it will set the tone for harmonious, mutually beneficial relationships to follow.
Contra Proferentem: The Allure Of Ambiguous Boilerplate, Michelle E. Boardman
Contra Proferentem: The Allure Of Ambiguous Boilerplate, Michelle E. Boardman
Michigan Law Review
Bad boilerplate can shake one' s faith in evolution; not only does it not die away, it multiplies. The puzzle is why. Much of boilerplate is ambiguous or incomprehensible. This alienates consumers and is i ncreasingly punished by courts construing the language against the drafter. There must, therefore, be some hidden allure to ambiguous boilerplate. The popular theory is trickery: drafters lure consumers in with promising language that comes to nothing in court. But this trick would require consumers to do three things they do not do-read the language, understand it, and take comfort in it. There is a hidden …
Modularity In Contracts: Boilerplate And Information Flow, Henry E. Smith
Modularity In Contracts: Boilerplate And Information Flow, Henry E. Smith
Michigan Law Review
Contractual boilerplate is a little like property. Such a statement might seem like a category mistake. After all, contractual boilerplate language is part of contracts, which, unlike property, are freely customizable by the parties. Contracts create rights between those parties, not against the world at large. Nor do people who devise new boilerplate terms usually have intellectual property in the provisions themselves. I will argue that, in an interesting and overlooked way, boilerplate is the first way station on the road from contract to property. In particular, boilerplate, like all legal communication, is the result of striking a trade-off between …
Law, Narrative, And The Continuing Colonist Oppression Of Native Hawaiians, David Barnard
Law, Narrative, And The Continuing Colonist Oppression Of Native Hawaiians, David Barnard
ExpressO
The article does three things. First, and for the first time, it brings to bear the perspectives of critical race theory, postcolonial theory, and narrative theory on the U.S. Supreme Court’s 2000 decision in Rice v. Cayetano, which dealt a severe blow to Native Hawaiians’ struggles for redress and reparations for a century of dispossession and impoverishment at the hands of the United States. Second, it demonstrates in the concrete case of Hawaii the power of a particular historical narrative—when it is accepted uncritically by the Supreme Court—to render the law itself into an instrument of colonial domination. Third, it …
Some New Methodologies For Pattern Recognition Aided By Self-Organizing Maps., Arijit Laha Dr.
Some New Methodologies For Pattern Recognition Aided By Self-Organizing Maps., Arijit Laha Dr.
Doctoral Theses
In this thesis we develop several techniques for performing different pattern recognition tasks. In particular, the pattern recognition tasks considered here are classification and vector quantization. We propose several methods for designing classifiers and address various issues involved in the task. For vector quantization, we develop a method for image compression with superior psychovisual reproduction quality. We also propose a method for fast codebook search in a vector quantizer. We exploit different properties of Self-organizing Map (SOM) network for developing these methods. Along with SOM, we also use fuzzy sets theory and Dempster-Shafer theory of evidence to design classi- fiers …

Architectural Digest For International Trade And Labor Law: Regional Free Trade Agreements And Minimum Criteria For Enforceable Social Clauses, Marley S. Weiss
Architectural Digest For International Trade And Labor Law: Regional Free Trade Agreements And Minimum Criteria For Enforceable Social Clauses, Marley S. Weiss
Faculty Scholarship
Until the advent of binding “social clauses” in free trade arrangements, and incorporation of stronger social rights in the European Community treaties, the rapid widening and deepening of international commercial integration proceeded largely separate from international labor rights obligations. Inclusion of a “social clause” in a trade agreement ensures that the parties´ international labor rights commitments have equal dignity and binding force with their trade obligations. The threat of economic sanction for non-observance of labor commitments akin to the penalties for trade rule violations also may provide some “teeth” to induce compliance, unlike the lack of economic sanctions for violation …

Law In The Digital Age: How Visual Communication Technologies Are Transforming The Practice, Theory, And Teaching Of Law, Richard K. Sherwin, Neal Feigenson, Christina Spiesel
ExpressO
Law today has entered the digital age. The way law is practiced – how truth and justice are represented and assessed – is increasingly dependent on what appears on electronic screens in courtrooms, law offices, government agencies, and elsewhere. Practicing lawyers know this and are rapidly adapting to the new era of digital visual rhetoric. Legal theory and education, however, have yet to catch up. This article is the first systematic effort to theorize law's transformation by new visual and multimedia technologies and to set out the changes in legal pedagogy that are needed to prepare law students for practice …

On the Green is an internal publication of Gallaudet College, which later became Gallaudet University. It notified employees of updates around the campus and in the broader community, including new construction and the establishment of new academic programs. Running until 2010, it was supplanted by various forms of online mass communications across multiple audiences.
Misplaced Angst---Another Look At Consent-Search Jurisprudence, Daniel R. Williams
Misplaced Angst---Another Look At Consent-Search Jurisprudence, Daniel R. Williams
ExpressO
Conventional scholarship misunderstands the judicial invocation of voluntariness when evaluating a purported consensual search. The key is to nail down more precisely what we mean by the term, consent. Most commentators mistakenly entwine consent and waiver, wrongly treating the act of consenting (to a search, to questioning, etc.) as an instance where the actor is waiving a constitutional right. That conceptual error promotes the view that consent refers to a subjective condition, a psychological state, which, in turn, spurs the expectation that voluntariness refers to a person's inner experience. On this view of consent, the person's inner experience is what …
