The Development Of Bilingual Education In Berlin’S Primary Schools, Elizabeth Buckley Apr 2006

The Development Of Bilingual Education In Berlin’S Primary Schools, Elizabeth Buckley

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

The debate on language education is flourishing in the current state of globalization and immigration. The rising amount of globalization has increased the amount of linguistic diversity present in one’s everyday life. There are between 6,000 and 7,000 languages in the world and half of them are in danger of disappearing. Therefore, it is becoming more common for the presence of many different linguistic groups within one country. For instance, in Indonesia, there are over 700 languages spoken. Although, the distribution of languages is not equal, it is nearly impossible to go through life without being exposed to another language …

The Remnants Of A Shard Of Hope Tainted By The Shadow Of Evil, Sergio J.A. Ragno Apr 2006

The Remnants Of A Shard Of Hope Tainted By The Shadow Of Evil, Sergio J.A. Ragno

Hidden in Plain Sight Projects

A symbol is unique as a form of communication in that it holds no meaning standing alone, but rather gains meaning by people. As such a symbol can sometimes lead one astray for its meaning is liquid. A symbol that once represented something beautiful can be used by a sinister group, and through that become an icon of evil. Such a symbol can be found here at Gettysburg College: the Swastika. I found this symbol decorating the floor tiles of the second floor entrance to Breidenbaugh Hall. What the symbol represents may not be as ambiguous as it may seem, …

Barriers To Innovation And The Creation Of A Knowledge Society In India, Rishikesha T Krishnan Apr 2006

Barriers To Innovation And The Creation Of A Knowledge Society In India, Rishikesha T Krishnan

Working Papers

In this paper, we identify the principal societal, systemic, organizational and governmental barriers to innovation and the creation of a knowledge society in India. Societal barriers include an ambivalent attitude towards knowledge, a "knowing-doing gap", hesitation to specialize, a static view of techno logy, i.rltolerance offailure, and a declining respect for diversity and dissent. A lack of design and experimentation in engineering curricula, lack of cooperation between firms, lack of depth in different industries, absence of a culture of debate, and barriers to the founding and growth of high technology firms are systemic barriers.

Multiple Interrogatives In Child Language, Lydia Grebenyova Apr 2006

Multiple Interrogatives In Child Language, Lydia Grebenyova

Linguistics

The goal of this paper is to explore how children acquire the syntactic and semantic properties of multiple interrogatives. Consider the examples of multiple interrogatives from English in (1) and from Russian in (2). (1) Who bought what? (2) Kto čto kupil? [Russian] who what bought ‘Who bought what?’ Already we can see the syntactic differences between these two languages: in English, only one wh-phrase is fronted, while in Russian, as in all Slavic languages, all wh-phrases are fronted. Moreover, there are some semantic differences in multiple interrogatives across languages, which will be demonstrated in section 2. These language-specific properties …

Minority Protagonists In The Young Adult Historical Fiction Novel, Patty L. Martin Apr 2006

Minority Protagonists In The Young Adult Historical Fiction Novel, Patty L. Martin

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

In young adult literature, the reader finds most of the same genres as are available for adult fiction. One of the challenges that readers of young adult literature face is that, although some progress has been made to develop and feature minority characters and protagonists, minorities are still underrepresented in young adult literature. Although young adult historical fiction features more minority protagonists, this is ordinarily done because historical fiction lends itself as an educational tool, where history, geography, and social studies can be illuminated through the genre. As demographics in the United States continue to change and as minority groups …

The Modern Construction Of Myth [Review], Erwin F. Cook Apr 2006

The Modern Construction Of Myth [Review], Erwin F. Cook

Classical Studies Faculty Research

The Modern Construction of Myth, by Andrew yon Hendy, is an interdisciplinary survey of the construction of myth in the late eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The author's thesis is that modern theories of myth can be divided into three broad groups, folkloristic, ideological, and constitutive, and that they all derive from an original, romantic, construct. The survey is organized diachronically, with some attention to taxonomy and axiology. I find the author's thesis entirely persuasive: what follows is meant to serve as a guide to the overall argument and additionally to highlight various important threads that remain somewhat diffuse in …

On Healing And Christianity: An Examination Of Origen And Tertullian's Views On Healing And Christianity, Brian L. Brunner

Doctor of Ministry

This paper examines the theological and practical views of Origen and Tertullian on the relationship between healing and Christianity. Its introduction examines the reason for the study, outlines research into this field, and explains the research method utilized. The following two chapters devoted to Origen and Tertullian begin by examining the role of healing in their theology. The chapters then move to a discussion of their understanding and view on the nascent Western medical science found in the Greco-Roman world. Each chapter then ends with a look at their views on the role of faith healing. All of these subjects …

Which Islam-Ism? Diversity In Islamic Society And Its Implications For Democracy, Christopher M. Ebsch Apr 2006

Which Islam-Ism? Diversity In Islamic Society And Its Implications For Democracy, Christopher M. Ebsch

Masters Theses

This study aims to refute claims of Islamic exceptionalism in the midst of recent waves of democratization, thereby disproving assumptions of any incompatibility between democracy and Islam. My research will show that such sweeping assumptions gloss over significant, developmental democratic movements within Muslim nations as well as several uniquely Islamic supports for democratic ideals and institutions.

I begin by examining recent political activities conducive to democracy in Muslim states, by distinguishing between divergent principles in the Qur' an, some of which have been used by moderate, democratically-oriented Islamists, and by realizing the historical, political antecedents leading to a rise in …

Muslim Women’S Religious And Feminist Identities: A Study Of Muslim Feminism In The Bosnian Context, María Lis Baiocchi Apr 2006

Muslim Women’S Religious And Feminist Identities: A Study Of Muslim Feminism In The Bosnian Context, María Lis Baiocchi

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

This research paper explores Muslim Feminism in Bosnia Herzegovina as a phenomenon that has been developing in the past ten years or so among Muslim women.

The introduction to this paper defines the concept of Muslim feminism and examines how women’s identities as Muslim believers and their identities as women fighting for gender equality (i.e.: feminists) shape and determine one another.

I then move on to examine my ethnographic research methodology and my self reflections from the field.

Later, I give an account of the history of feminism in Bosnia and Herzegovina. I pay particular attention upon the noticeable absence …

Spread Spectrum Is Good-But It Does Not Obsolete Nbc V. U.S.!, Charles Jackson, Raymond Pickholtz, Dale Hatfield Apr 2006

Spread Spectrum Is Good-But It Does Not Obsolete Nbc V. U.S.!, Charles Jackson, Raymond Pickholtz, Dale Hatfield

Federal Communications Law Journal

The Authors criticize recent statements by leading legal commentators suggesting that the development of spread spectrum has eliminated radio interference and helped make the underlying legal foundations for regulating spectrum obsolete. The Authors provide a non-technical explanation of how spread spectrum works and why it does not have the effect of eliminating radio interference. The Authors conclude that new technologies are likely to increase the availability of usable spectrum, but they have not wiped out the problem of interference.
