Quo Vadis: An Integrated Direction For Catholic Media Technology Engagement, Eugene M. Gan Jan 2006

Quo Vadis: An Integrated Direction For Catholic Media Technology Engagement, Eugene M. Gan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Over the years, the Catholic Church has explored issues of media technology and how it relates to education. At the same time, a number of profound, modern Catholic thinkers have wrestled with the nature of media technology and how it affects the human condition. These two threads have been independent of each other. An effective conceptual understanding of the role and meaning of media technology in Catholic education requires us to weave these two threads together to craft an integrated and coherent synthesis. The question I raise is: in a culture that promulgates the digital lifestyle as the standard and …

Soft Tissue To Hard Tissue Advancement Ratios For Mandibular Elongation Using Distraction Osteogenesis In Children, Michael B. Melugin, Pamela R. Hanson, Christopher A. Bergstrom, William I. Schuckit, T. Gerard Bradley

School of Dentistry Faculty Research and Publications

Distraction osteogenesis is extensively used for the elongation of hypoplastic mandibles in children, yet the soft tissue profile response to this is not well understood. The pre- and posttreatment lateral cephalometric radiographs of 27 pediatric patients who underwent bilateral mandibular elongation using distraction osteogenesis were analyzed retrospectively to correlate horizontal soft tissue advancement with horizontal underlying bone advancement at B point and pogonion. Horizontal advancement (in millimeters) of bone and overlying soft tissue at these points was collected from the radiographs of each patient, and linear regression analysis was performed to determine the relationship of hard to soft tissue horizontal …

An Exploratory Study Of Consumer Adoption Of Online Shopping: Mediating Effect Of Online Purchase Intention, Songpol Kulviwat, Ramendra Thakur, Chiquan Guo

Marketing Faculty Publications

An exploratory study was conducted to investigate consumer adoption of online purchase using a survey data set. Based upon the theory of innovation and self-efficacy theory, risk aversion, online proficiency, shopping convenience, and product choice variety were proposed to influence consumer intention to shop online, which, in turn, affects online purchases. Results of regression analyses revealed that all but shopping convenience were significant predictors of consumer intention to purchase online. In addition, consumer intention directly determines consumer purchases online. Finally, consumer intention to purchase online mediates the relationship of risk aversion, shopping convenience, and product choice variety to online shopping. …

Crime, War & Romanticism: Arthur Andersen And The Nature Of Entity Guilt, David N. Cassuto Jan 2006

Crime, War & Romanticism: Arthur Andersen And The Nature Of Entity Guilt, David N. Cassuto

Elisabeth Haub School of Law Faculty Publications

In 2002, Arthur Andersen, LLP stood trial for obstruction of justice. The prosecution offered several theories as to who at the firm had committed the crime but no one theory satisfied all twelve jurors. In an attempt to break its deadlock, the jury asked whether it could convict i f some jurors thought Person A at Andersen had done it and some thought it was Person B. Following argument, the judge ruled that it could convict.

This article argues that the court's response to the jury's query was wrong as a matter of law and policy. The ruling misconstrues the …

Regulation Of Powder Mass Flow Rate In Gravity-Fed Powder Feeder Systems, Vishnu Thayalan, Robert G. Landers Jan 2006

Regulation Of Powder Mass Flow Rate In Gravity-Fed Powder Feeder Systems, Vishnu Thayalan, Robert G. Landers

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Precise regulation of powder mass flow in laser-based manufacturing processes is critical to achieving excellent part dimensional and microstructure quality. Control of powder mass flow is challenging because low flow rates, where nonlinear effects are significant, are typically required. Also, gravity-fed powder feeder systems have significant material transport delays, making the control of powder mass flow even more challenging. This paper presents a control strategy for regulating the powder mass flow rate in a gravity-fed powder feeder system. A dynamic model of the powder feeder system, including material transport delay, is constructed, and a modified proportional plus integral (PI) controller …

An Optimal Dynamic Inversion Approach For Controlling A Class Of One-Dimensional Nonlinear Distributed Parameter Systems, Radhakant Padhi, S. N. Balakrishnan Jan 2006

An Optimal Dynamic Inversion Approach For Controlling A Class Of One-Dimensional Nonlinear Distributed Parameter Systems, Radhakant Padhi, S. N. Balakrishnan

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Combining the principles of dynamic inversion and optimization theory, a new approach is presented for stable control of a class of one-dimensional nonlinear distributed parameter systems, assuming the availability a continuous actuator in the spatial domain. Unlike the existing approximate-then-design and design-then-approximate techniques, here there is no need of any approximation either of the system dynamics or of the resulting controller. Rather, the control synthesis approach is fairly straight-forward and simple. The controller formulation has more elegance because we can prove the convergence of the controller to its steady state value. To demonstrate the potential of the proposed technique, a …

Experimental Simulation Of Lightning Optical Emissions In Clouds, Anil Ogale, Kunal Mitra, Arindam Banerjee Jan 2006

Experimental Simulation Of Lightning Optical Emissions In Clouds, Anil Ogale, Kunal Mitra, Arindam Banerjee

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The objective of the study is to experimentally determine the information content of lightning optical emissions through clouds. Clouds affect the amplitude of lightning signals and the apparent dimensions of the optical source. Multiple scattering from the cloud media also alters the shape of the temporal profile of the lightning signal. The goal is to provide accurate estimates of the arrival time delay and temporal pulse width broadening of output signals emitted from clouds for different cloud and lightning parameters. Experiments conducted in the laboratory yield a temporally broadened pulse with an overall decrease in the peak and a delay …

Neuroadaptive Model Following Controller Design For A Nonaffine Uav Model, Nishant Unnikrishnan, S. N. Balakrishnan Jan 2006

Neuroadaptive Model Following Controller Design For A Nonaffine Uav Model, Nishant Unnikrishnan, S. N. Balakrishnan

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper proposes a new model-following adaptive control design technique for nonlinear systems that are nonaffine in control. The adaptive controller uses online neural networks that guarantee tracking in the presence of unmodeled dynamics and/or parameter uncertainties present in the system model through an online control adaptation procedure. The controller design is carried out in two steps: (i) synthesis of a set of neural networks which capture the unmodeled (neglected) dynamics or model uncertainties due to parametric variations and (ii) synthesis of a controller that drives the state of the actual plant to that of a reference model. This method …

Optimal Impulse Control Of Systems With Control Constraints And Application To Hiv Treatment, Vivek Yadav, S. N. Balakrishnan Jan 2006

Optimal Impulse Control Of Systems With Control Constraints And Application To Hiv Treatment, Vivek Yadav, S. N. Balakrishnan

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this paper, conditions for optimal impulse control of an impulsive system with constraints on control are derived. These hold for a system whose states can be changed instantaneously at discrete times with impulses while a continuous control is being applied between those times. The conditions derived are applied to the problem of optimal HIV treatment. Simulation results are presented to show the treatment procedure. The results obtained show that the intervention method developed leads to good results.

Optimal Design Of Power System Stabilizers Using A Small Population Based Pso, Ganesh K. Venayagamoorthy, Tridib Kumar Das Jan 2006

Optimal Design Of Power System Stabilizers Using A Small Population Based Pso, Ganesh K. Venayagamoorthy, Tridib Kumar Das

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Power system stabilizers (PSSs) are used to generate supplementary control signals to excitation systems in order to damp out local and inter-area oscillations. In this paper, a modified particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm with a small population is presented for the design of optimal PSSs. The small population based PSO (SPPSO) is used to determine the optimal parameters of several PSSs simultaneously in a multi-machine power system. In order to maintain a dynamic search process, the idea of particle regeneration in the population is also proposed. Optimal PSS parameters are determined for the power system subjected to small and large …

Force Measurements On A Flapping And Pitching Wing At Low Reynolds Numbers, Kakkattukuzhy M. Isaac, Anthony Colozza, Jessica Rolwes Jan 2006

Force Measurements On A Flapping And Pitching Wing At Low Reynolds Numbers, Kakkattukuzhy M. Isaac, Anthony Colozza, Jessica Rolwes

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Force measurements from experiments conducted in water on a flapping-and-pitching thin flat plate wing of semi-elliptic planform at low Reynolds numbers are reported. Time varying force data, measured using a force transducer, provide a means to understand the mechanisms that lead to enhanced performance observed in insect flight compared to fixed wing aerodynamics. Experimental uncertainties associated with low level (∼1N) fluid dynamic force measurements on flapping-and-pitching wings are addressed. a previously proposed pitching mode in which the leading edge and trailing edge switch roles to allow using cambered airfoils has been shown to be viable and may have advantages over …

Ethical Incentives For Employers In Adopting Legal Service Plans To Handle Employment Disputes, Michael Z. Green Jan 2006

Ethical Incentives For Employers In Adopting Legal Service Plans To Handle Employment Disputes, Michael Z. Green

Faculty Scholarship

Given the difficulties for employees in finding a lawyer to handle an employment dispute and with the growth of ADR, this article asserts that employers should adopt legal service plans as an employee benefit. It might seem counterintuitive for employers to provide their employees with a legal service benefit that may be used against them in employment disputes. However, comprehensive dispute resolution systems employ fair mechanisms that allow employees to resolve their disputes as soon as possible. Having sound legal counsel can become a major component of an employer's dispute resolution system because it offers a distinct human resource advantage …

Do Divorce Law Reforms Matter For Divorce Rates - Evidence From Portugal, Clarisse Coelho, Nuno Garoupa Jan 2006

Do Divorce Law Reforms Matter For Divorce Rates - Evidence From Portugal, Clarisse Coelho, Nuno Garoupa

Faculty Scholarship

The effect of divorce law reforms on divorce rates in the United States and elsewhere has generated a controversy in the law and economics literature. In this article, we study the contribution of divorce law reforms for the evolution of divorce rates in Portugal over the last 40 years. We focus on the reforms of divorce law in the 1970s and in the 1990s as well as socioeconomic factors as determinants of the divorce rate. We find that the introduction of a modern divorce law in the 1970s had a significant effect on the divorce rate, but the changes of …

Resolving Medical Malpractice Claims In The Medicare Program: Can It Be Done?, Eleanor D. Kinney, William M. Sage Jan 2006

Resolving Medical Malpractice Claims In The Medicare Program: Can It Be Done?, Eleanor D. Kinney, William M. Sage

Faculty Scholarship

There is increasing interest in an integrated approach to patient safety and medical liability among policymakers. We have proposed Medicareled malpractice reform that would provide Medicare beneficiaries with better safety, improved communication in the event of error, preservation of therapeutic relationships, timely settlement, and fair compensation at a lower administrative cost. Disputes in the reformed system would be adjudicated by Medicare's existing administrative appeals system that would work together with Medicare's quality improvement regulation and payment policy to reduce errors and compensate injured patients.

Despite the laudable rationale for Medicare-led malpractice reform, important issues attend the constitutional and statutory authority …

The Role Of Medicare In Medical Malpractice Reform, William M. Sage Jan 2006

The Role Of Medicare In Medical Malpractice Reform, William M. Sage

Faculty Scholarship

The medical malpractice crisis we think we are in is not the medical malpractice crisis we actually are in. Today's malpractice crisis is not an epidemic of lawsuits, impressionable juries, or even excessive insurance premiums. The real medical malpractice crisis is that the law has formed little connection between the malpractice system and the health care system.

A Comparison Of Diode-Clamped And Cascaded Multilevel Converters For A Statcom With Energy Storage, Ying Cheng, Chang Qian, Mariesa Crow, Steven Pekarek, Stan Atcitty Jan 2006

A Comparison Of Diode-Clamped And Cascaded Multilevel Converters For A Statcom With Energy Storage, Ying Cheng, Chang Qian, Mariesa Crow, Steven Pekarek, Stan Atcitty

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The progression of distributed generation within a bulk power system will lead to the need for greater control of transmission-line power flows. Static synchronous compensators (STATCOMs) provide a power-electronics-based means of embedded control of transmission-line voltage and power flows. The integration of energy storage with a STATCOM can extend traditional STATCOM capabilities to four-quadrant power flow control and transient stability improvement. This paper discusses energy storage systems (ESSs) integrated with conventional and multilevel bidirectional power converters for a hybrid STATCOM/ESS. Conventional, diode-clamped, and cascaded multilevel converter-based STATCOM/ESSs are developed, and their performances for a variety of power system applications are …

Adaptive And Probabilistic Power Control Algorithms For Dense Rfid Reader Network, Kainan Cha, Anil Ramachandran, Jagannathan Sarangapani Jan 2006

Adaptive And Probabilistic Power Control Algorithms For Dense Rfid Reader Network, Kainan Cha, Anil Ramachandran, Jagannathan Sarangapani

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In radio frequency identification (RFID) systems, the detection range and read rates may suffer from interferences between high power devices such as readers. In dense networks, this problem grows severely and degrades system performance. In this paper, we investigate feasible power control schemes to ensure overall coverage area of the system while maintaining a desired data rate. The power control should dynamically adjust the output power of a RFID reader by adapting to the noise level seen during tag reading and acceptable signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). We present a novel distributed adaptive power control (DAPC) and probabilistic power control (PPC) as …

Adaptive Critic Design Based Neuro-Fuzzy Controller For A Static Compensator In A Multimachine Power System, Salman Mohagheghi, Ganesh K. Venayagamoorthy, Ronald G. Harley Jan 2006

Adaptive Critic Design Based Neuro-Fuzzy Controller For A Static Compensator In A Multimachine Power System, Salman Mohagheghi, Ganesh K. Venayagamoorthy, Ronald G. Harley

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper presents a novel nonlinear optimal controller for a static compensator (STATCOM) connected to a power system, using artificial neural networks and fuzzy logic. The action dependent heuristic dynamic programming, a member of the adaptive Critic designs family, is used for the design of the STATCOM neuro-fuzzy controller. This neuro-fuzzy controller provides optimal control based on reinforcement learning and approximate dynamic programming. Using a proportional-integrator approach the proposed controller is capable of dealing with actual rather than deviation signals. The STATCOM is connected to a multimachine power system. Two multimachine systems are considered in this study: a 10-bus system …

Modeling Of Dielectric Mixtures Containing Conducting Inclusions With Statistically Distributed Aspect Ratio, Marina Koledintseva, Sandeep K. R. Chandra, Richard E. Dubroff, Robert W. Schwartz Jan 2006

Modeling Of Dielectric Mixtures Containing Conducting Inclusions With Statistically Distributed Aspect Ratio, Marina Koledintseva, Sandeep K. R. Chandra, Richard E. Dubroff, Robert W. Schwartz

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

An analytical model of composites made of a dielectric base and randomly oriented metal inclusions in the form of nanorods is presented. This model is based on the generalized Maxwell Garnett (MG) mixing rule. In this model, the nanorod particles are modeled as prolate spheroids with a statistically normal distribution of their aspect ratios. It is shown that parameters of the distribution laws affect the frequency characteristics of the composites both at microwave and optical frequencies. The results of computations are represented.

Hardrock Homesteads: Free Access And The General Mining Law Of 1872, Andrew P. Morriss, Roger E. Meiners, Andrew Dorchak Jan 2006

Hardrock Homesteads: Free Access And The General Mining Law Of 1872, Andrew P. Morriss, Roger E. Meiners, Andrew Dorchak

Faculty Scholarship

Most discussions of the US General Mining Law of 1872 begin with the premise that the statute is an outdated relic of 19th-century attitudes towards resources and should be replaced with a modern system of royalties, permits and concessions. In contrast, this article argues that the statute provides institutional mechanisms that resolve incentive problems created by government ownership of mineral resources. Instead of calling for radical change in US mining laws, the authors hold up the free access principle of the General Mining Law of 1872 as a model for privatisation of assets whose value is unknown.

Student Quality As Measured By Lsat Scores: Migration Patterns In The U.S. News Rankings Era, William D. Henderson, Andrew P. Morriss

Faculty Scholarship

This study examines the change in entering-class median LSATscore, a key input into the U.S. News & World Report ("U.S. News') rankings, between 1993 and 2004. Using multivariate regression analysis, the authors model several factors that can influence the direction and magnitude of this change. The study presents six specific findings: (1) the marketfor high Law SchoolAdmission Test (LSAT) scores is divided into two segments that operate under different rules; (2) initial starting position is a strong predictor of the future gain or loss in LSATscores; (3) the allure of the high-end corporate law firms appears to cause a signficant …

Download It While Its Hot: Open Access And Legal Scholarship, Lawrence B. Solum Jan 2006

Download It While Its Hot: Open Access And Legal Scholarship, Lawrence B. Solum

Faculty Scholarship

This Article analyzes the shift of legal scholarship from the old world of law reviews to today's world of peer reviews to tomorrow's world of open access legal blogs. This shift is occurring in three dimensions. First, legal scholarship is moving from the long form (treatises and law review articles) to the short form (very short articles, blog posts, and online collaborations). Second, a regime of exclusive rights is giving way to a regime of open access. Third, intermediaries (law school editorial boards, peer-reviewed journals) are being supplemented by disintermediated forms (papers on the Internet, blogs). Blogs and internet conversations …

Part III, The Premises of the Model, discusses the analytical assumptions underlying our depiction of the judicial selection process in the form of a simple spatial model that can be easily understood and manipulated. The heart of the article is found in Parts IV and V. In Part IV, A Pivotal Politics Model of the Judicial Selection Process, we set …

The Right To Food: Holding Global Actors Accountable Under International Law, Smita Narula Jan 2006

The Right To Food: Holding Global Actors Accountable Under International Law, Smita Narula

Elisabeth Haub School of Law Faculty Publications

Economic globalization represents both an unmet opportunity and a significant challenge for the fulfillment of social and economic rights, including the right to food. While corporate sector accountability and the responsibility of international financial institutions (IFIs) to ensure social and economic rights are now at the forefront of the globalization discourse, greater attention must be paid to how these actors can be held accountable under international law. The existing human rights legal framework is ill-equipped to deal with violations committed by non-state actors, such as transnational corporations (TNCs), and multi-state actors, such as IFIs. Using the right to food as …

State Action Antitrust Exemption Collides With Deregulation: Rehabilitating The Foreseeability Doctrine, Elizabeth Trujillo Jan 2006

State Action Antitrust Exemption Collides With Deregulation: Rehabilitating The Foreseeability Doctrine, Elizabeth Trujillo

Faculty Scholarship

The state action antitrust exemption, also known as the state action immunity doctrine, is used by antitrust defendants to shield themselves against antitrust liability in instances where their anticompetitive conduct, if not under the aegis of state policy, would have been deemed a violation of federal antitrust law. Under the Midcal test, a court may grant state action immunity to a defendant if it is proven that the alleged anticompetitive conduct is pursuant to a clearly-articulated state policy and has been actively supervised by the state.

This paper evaluates the role, function, and definition of the state action exemption in …

Propertization, Contract, Competition, And Communication: Law's Struggle To Adapt To The Transformative Powers Of The Internet, David Barnhizer

Cleveland State Law Review

This Symposium focuses in part on the ideas of Margaret Jane Radin as a point of departure for the various contributions. A key part of the analysis includes the process she calls propertization in the context of intellectual property rules and the Internet. The approach taken in this introductory essay is twofold. The first part presents some key points raised by the Symposium contributors. Of course, that overview is necessarily incomplete, because the contributions represent a rich group of analyses about vital concerns relating to how our legal system should respond to the challenge of the Internet and information systems …

Monism, Nominalism, And Public-Private In The Work Of Margaret Jane Radin, Christopher L. Sagers Jan 2006

Monism, Nominalism, And Public-Private In The Work Of Margaret Jane Radin, Christopher L. Sagers

Cleveland State Law Review

This essay begins by situating the distinction in history generally and in American legal thought. Its historical aspect seems important because it suggests that the distinction is not predetermined—it is historically and culturally contingent. That fact has been largely ignored in the American legal academy, and among most of the judiciary it is all but outright socialist treachery to suggest it.

The essay moves on to consider Radin's work itself. The prominence of the distinction is relatively obvious in some of her work on technological marketing and design issues, but I will suggest that in fact it runs quietly just …
