Using Organisational Learning Theory As A Means Of Mobilising Knowledge Resources In The Control Of Infection, Andy Nichols Jan 2006

Using Organisational Learning Theory As A Means Of Mobilising Knowledge Resources In The Control Of Infection, Andy Nichols

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

This research investigates learning and infection control knowledge within hospitals in the United Kingdom (UK). Fundamental infection control practices are not always carried out by clinical staff caring for patients, as a result infections are transmitted (Pittet et al 2000). Failure to carry out infection control practices may reflect a division between the espoused and actual practice of clinicians (Huzzard and Ostergren 2002). This division may be contributed to by infection control teams and educationalists relying on classroom based, pedagogic teaching and failing to investigate the value of other learning theories (Courtney 1998). This study is based upon an investigation …

Relationship Between Antipyretic Effects And Cytokine Levels In Uncomplicated Falciparum Malaria During Different Treatment Regimes, Elisabeth Hugosson, Scott M. Montgomery, Zul Premji, Marita Troye-Blomberg, Anders Bjorkman Jan 2006

Relationship Between Antipyretic Effects And Cytokine Levels In Uncomplicated Falciparum Malaria During Different Treatment Regimes, Elisabeth Hugosson, Scott M. Montgomery, Zul Premji, Marita Troye-Blomberg, Anders Bjorkman

Pathology, East Africa

We have previously shown that both chloroquine and paracetamol (acetaminophen) have antipyretic activity during treatment of acute uncomplicated Plasmodium falciparum malaria in children 1-4 years old. Here, we studied if this effect was accompanied by changes in plasma cytokine levels. The 104 children were treated with either chloroquine or sulfadoxine/pyrimethamine (SP) alone, SP + chloroquine or SP + paracetamol for 4 days. Cytokine levels were determined days 0, 2 and 3, body temperature every sixth hour until 72 h and parasitemia once daily for 4 days. At admission, body temperature correlated with levels of IL-10, IFN-γ and IL-6, and parasitemia …

Department of Surgery Faculty Papers

INTRODUCTION: Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is present in over 90% of the world's population. This infection is considered benign, even though in limited cases EBV is associated with infectious and neoplastic conditions. Over the past decade, the EBV association with breast cancer has been constantly debated. Adding to this clinical and biological uncertainty, different techniques gave contradictory results for the presence of EBV in breast carcinoma specimens. In this study, minor groove binding (MGB)-TaqMan real time PCR was used to detect the presence of EBV DNA in both peripheral blood and tumor samples of selected patients. METHODS: Peripheral blood and breast …

Community Reactions To Campaigns Addressing Crystal Methamphetamine Use Among Gay And Bisexual Men In New York City, Jose Nanín, Jeffrey T. Parsons, David S. Bimbi, Christian Grov, Justin T. Brown

Publications and Research

Crystal methamphetamine (aka “crystal meth”) use with high-risk sex has become an emerging health problem for gay and bisexual men in New York City since the late 1990s. Public health campaigns were eventually developed to encourage gay and bisexual men to avoid or reconsider using crystal meth. Reactions to three campaigns were measured with a cross-sectional survey administered in 2004. Among an ethnically-diverse sample of 971 gay and bisexual men, 61.8% reported seeing the campaigns. Those who reported ever using crystal meth, recent use, and recent use with sex were significantly more likely to have seen the campaigns. In …

A Tuberculosis Contact Investigation Involving Two Private Nursing Homes In Inner Western Sydney In 2004, Bradley Forssman, Leena Gupta, Kay Mills

Medical Papers and Journal Articles

Australia has one of the lowest incidence rates of tuberculosis (TB) in the world, approximately five per 100,000 per year 1, although in some parts of the country the incidence is considerably higher. In the former Central Sydney Area Health Service the incidence rate in 2003 was 14 per 100,000 per year.2 The incidence is also higher in those aged 65 years and over1, a population that has declining immunocompetence due to a variety of factors.3 Furthermore, the subpopulation of this group (and, indeed, of people of any age) living in residential institutions such as nursing homes and hostels are …

Characterization Of Vancomycin Resistance In Staphylococcus Aureus, Paige Mccarthy Fox Jan 2006

Characterization Of Vancomycin Resistance In Staphylococcus Aureus, Paige Mccarthy Fox

Theses and Dissertations

In the past decade, Staphylococcus aureus has developed two distinct vancomycin resistance mechanisms. First, the bacterium is capable of generating a thickened, poorly crosslinked cell wall that creates false targets. These targets cause vancomycin to bind at the periphery of the thickened peptidoglycan, allowing normal cell wall formation to continue at the cell membrane. Second, S. aureus has acquired genes from Enterococcus that encode an alternative stem peptide. The genes, known as van genes, alter the target of vancomycin, rendering vancomycin treatment ineffectual. In this work, we attempted to further characterize both mechanisms of vancomycin resistance. First, a potential link between …

Syringes In The Sea: Why Federal Regulation Of Medical Waste Is Long Overdue, Chryssa V. Deliganis, Steve P. Calandrillo

Articles

Medical waste is produced everywhere that people live and by almost everyone at some point in their lives. Its treatment and disposal implicates the environment, public health, the economy, human dignity, and aesthetics. With the many issues involved, the need for federal regulation of medical waste today is manifest.

This Article examines the problem of medical waste disposal and evaluates the current state-based approach to regulation. Although many states have implemented stringent medical waste programs with some success, the absence of direct federal regulation in this area is problematic. The need for national leadership is clear, especially with respect to …

Semi-Parametric Inference In A Bivariate (Multivariate) Mixture Model, Denis H. Y. Leung, Jing Qin Jan 2006

Semi-Parametric Inference In A Bivariate (Multivariate) Mixture Model, Denis H. Y. Leung, Jing Qin

Research Collection School Of Economics

We consider estimation in a bivariate mixture model in which the component distributions can be decomposed into identical distributions. Previous approaches to estimation involve parametrizing the distributions. In this paper, we use a semi-parametric approach. The method is based on the exponential tilt model of Anderson (1979), where the log ratio of probability (density) functions from the bivariate components is linear in the observations. The proposed model does not require training samples, i.e., data with confirmed component membership. We show that in bivariate mixture models, parameters are identifiable. This is in contrast to previous works, where parameters are identifiable if …

Olsen, G. Y. Roper, H. Wang, Thomas J. Baldwin, S. Koenig, S. Johnson, J. L. Nordstrom, M. S. Diamond

Animal, Dairy, and Veterinary Science Faculty Publications

Humans infected with West Nile virus (WNV) may clinically present with symptoms that are suggestive of neurological infection. Nearly all treatments of WNV disease have been effective in animal models only if administered before or soon after viral challenge. Here, we evaluated whether a potent neutralizing anti-WNV humanized monoclonal antibody (MAb), hE16, could improve the course of disease in a hamster model when administered after the virus had infected neurons in the brain. Five days after viral injection, WNV was detected in the brains of hamsters by cytopathic assay, quantitative reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction, and immunohistochemical staining of WNV envelope …

Calibrating The Wealth And Health Of Nations: Trade, Health, And Foreign Policy After The Wto's First Decade, David P. Fidler

Articles by Maurer Faculty

One of the most important themes to emerge from the relationship between trade and health in the first ten year's of the WTO's existence is the challenge of achieving policy coherence. This task is a foreign policy challenge for WTO Members, which requires looking at the relationship between trade and health against the backdrop of the making and implementing of foreign policy. Policy coherence has generally become a major concern for foreign policymakers because post-Cold War trends, such as accelerating globalization, seriously challenge traditional foreign policy assumptions, practices, and institutions. Part of this new context for foreign policy involves the …

George Eliot And The Anxious Construction Of The Domestic Other: Racial Inheritance, Radical Femininity And Masculinity, And National Identity In "The Spanish Gypsy" And "Daniel Deronda"., Christina E. Godlewski

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This dissertation seeks to articulate the extent to which George Eliot engages in an active dialogue with contemporary scientific thought, particularly in respect to England's Jewish and Gypsy populations. I examine The Spanish Gypsy and Daniel Deronda to determine Eliot's position in relation to ideologies on race, gender, and class. Eliot's texts manage to expose some of the contradictions regarding these two "domestic others" within the dominant discourses of the Victorian period. Chapter one sets out my critical and methodological framework and foregrounds the discursive proximity between the Gypsies, the Jews, the working classes, and women in the Victorian period. …

Pharmaceutically Engineered Nanoparticles For Enhancing Immune Responses To Hiv-1 Tat And Gag P24 Proteins, Jigna D. Patel Jan 2006

Pharmaceutically Engineered Nanoparticles For Enhancing Immune Responses To Hiv-1 Tat And Gag P24 Proteins, Jigna D. Patel

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

These studies were aimed at investigating the potential application of nanoparticles engineered from oil-in-water microemulsion precursors for enhancing immune responses to HIV-1 Tat and Gag p24 proteins. Both of the HIV-1 proteins have been reported to be critical in the virus life cycle and are being evaluated in clinical trials as vaccine candidates. Anionic nanoparticles were prepared using emulsifying wax as the oil phase and Brij 78 and sodium dodecyl sulfate as the surfactants. The resulting nanoparticles were coated with Tat and were demonstrated to produce superior immune responses after administration to BALB/c mice compared to Tat adjuvanted with Alum. …

NPDC-1 was also demonstrated to be regulated post-transcriptionally through the ubiquitin/proteosome degradation pathway. Section III: Axolotl …

Social Contagion Of Violence, Jeffrey Fagan, Deanna L. Wilkinson, Garth Davies Jan 2006

Social Contagion Of Violence, Jeffrey Fagan, Deanna L. Wilkinson, Garth Davies

Faculty Scholarship

Since 1968, violence and other crimes in New York City have followed a pattern of recurring epidemics. There have been three consecutive and contiguous cycles characterized by sharp increases in homicides and assaults to an elevated rate followed by equally steep declines to levels near the previous starting point. The most recent epidemic, from 1985-96, had the sharpest rise and steepest decline of the three epidemics. Popular explanations of the current epidemic fail to account for both the rise and fall of the decline, or for the repetitive pattern of these epidemics. In this article, we use public health data …

Heat Transfer And Chemical Processes In Chemical Vapor Deposition Reactor For Synthesis Of Carbon Nanotubes, Wahed Rezk Wasel

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

A small-scale model of a CVD reactor was built. Axial and radial of major species concentrations and temperature profiles were obtained with a micro gas chromatograph and a fine thermocouple. Those temperature and species concentrations revealed detailed thermal and chemical structures of the CVD reactor.

The concentrations of argon plus hydrogen, methane, and C2Hx (C2H2 + C2H4 + C2H6) resulting from xylene decomposition were measured along the CVD at different temperatures. Ferrocene was added to xylene to investigate the effect of a catalyst on composition profiles. The …

Contagious Discourse: Germs, Mass Media, And The Shaping Of Reality, Amy Richardson Ballagh

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Over the past two decades, mass media coverage of certain infectious diseases has become more abundant. News reports of many of these contagious illnesses invoke fear in many people, such as Ebola and pandemic influenza; multidrug-resistant strains of infectious diseases, such as tuberculosis; and agents of biological warfare, a concern that is now at the forefront with many Americans due to the most recent act of bioterrorism on American soil following the events of September 11th. This dissertation focuses on the American public's perception of infectious diseases, particularly as portrayed in the cultural science curriculum. I examine the cyclic nature …

The increasing popularity of abalone as a seafood delicacy has led to the rapid development of abalone aquaculture worldwide. The commercial and economic importance of this industry has resulted in an increasing interest in the biology of this particular shellfish genus. In this study we focus on the identification of structural, functional and proliferative proteins in two species of abalone shellfish, Haliotis discus hannai and Haliotis tuberculata. Monoclonal and polyclonal antibodies that react with proteins in vertebrate and invertebrate tissues were selected and applied to abalone tissues. Cross sections of whole animals were analysed using avidin–biotin immunoperoxidase staining protocols. In …
