The Association Between 2002 Office Chlamydia Screening Rates, Physician Perception, And Physician Behavior, Blanche C. Collins
All ETDs from UAB
Background: Chlamydia prevalence in reproductive-age females is 3-20%. This study aimed to determine if physicians’: • sexual activity prevalence perceptions • Chlamydia prevalence perceptions • Sexual history-taking were associated with mean office screening rates; and if physicians’ perceptions of: • sexual activity • Chlamydia were associated with sexual history-taking. Methods: A national MCO’s physicians participated and were asked about their perceptions of sexual activity and Chlamydia prevalence and their sexual history-taking. Data sources included mean office screening rates, online surveys, and AMA’s masterfile. Results: Only 15% of at-risk females were screened (n = 75). Physicians who estimated lower 18 year-old …

Safeguarding animal health is of paramount importance to the US economy, public health and food safety. One of the most important causes of contamination in food products and of food-borne disease in humans is microorganisms that reside in the intestines of animals, such as Salmonella species and Escherichia coli O157:H7. A fundamental knowledge of the epidemiology of diseases, including an understanding of the agents and hosts, is a critical component of early (front-line) detection and prevention of contamination by microorganisms. Front-line detection is provided by animal handlers and personnel working with animals on a day-to-day basis, such as veterinarians. Currently …

The evidentiary basis of the currently accepted classification of living amphibians is discussed and shown not to warrant the degree of authority conferred on it by use and tradition. A new taxonomy of living amphibians is proposed to correct the deficiencies of the old one. This new taxonomy is based on the largest phylogenetic analysis of living Amphibia so far accomplished. We combined the comparative anatomical character evidence of Haas (2003) with DNA sequences from the mitochondrial transcription unit H1 (12S and 16S ribosomal RNA and tRNAValine genes, ø 2,400 bp of mitochondrial sequences) and the nuclear genes histone H3, …

Specific Investment: Explaining Anomalies In "Corporate Law", Margaret M. Blair, Lynn A. Stout
Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications
This Article has two goals: to praise Professor Robert Clark as a remarkable corporate scholar, and to explore how his work has helped to advance our understanding of corporations and corporate law. Clark wrote his classic treatise at a time when corporate scholarship was dominated by a principal-agent paradigm that viewed shareholders as the principals or sole residual claimants in public corporations and treated directors as shareholders' agents. This view naturally led contemporary scholars to believe that the chief economic problem of interest in corporate law was the "agency cost" problem of getting corporate directors to do what shareholders wanted …

Molecular And Biochemical Changes In The Ileum Of Weanling Pigs Fed Antibiotics As Growth Promotant And In Germ-Free Conditions, Sajan George
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Antibiotics are routinely fed as growth promoters to weanling pigs for the past 50 years. However, frequent use of feed antibiotics potentially results in emergence of drug resistance in microbes, which could be transferred to human pathogens and would interfere with the effective use of therapeutic antimicrobials in human medicine. Such health concerns about the use of antibiotics in animal feeds have led to considerable scientific research and debates. Recently, use of antibiotics in animal feeds has been banned in the European Union and would possibly impact US agriculture soon. This study was conducted to understand the molecular mechanisms of …
International Human Rights And Comparative Mental Disability Law: The Role Of Institutional Psychiatry In The Suppression Of Political Dissent, Michael L. Perlin
International Human Rights And Comparative Mental Disability Law: The Role Of Institutional Psychiatry In The Suppression Of Political Dissent, Michael L. Perlin
Articles & Chapters
For many years, institutional psychiatry was a major tool in the suppression of political dissent. Moreover, it appears painfully clear that, while the worst excesses of the past have mostly disappeared, the problem is not limited to the pages of history. What is more, the revelations of the worst of these abuses (and the concomitant rectification of many of them) may, paradoxically, have created the false illusion that all the major problems attendant to questions of institutional treatment and conditions in these nations have been solved. This is decidedly not so.
Remarkably, the issue of the human rights of persons …

Sampling African Malaria Vectors Using Limburger Cheese And 'Milk Cream' As Odour Baits, Eunice Anyango Owino
Sampling African Malaria Vectors Using Limburger Cheese And 'Milk Cream' As Odour Baits, Eunice Anyango Owino
All Master’s Theses
The efficacy of Limburger cheese as an odour bait for sampling African malaria vectors was evaluated. Studies were done in Suba district, Western Kenya at Lwanda Nyamasare village and in a screen house set up at the Thomas Odhiambo campus of the International Center of Insect Physiology and Ecology (ICIPE). Preliminary investigations compared mosquitoes caught by a Counter Flow Geometry (CFG) trap baited with Limburger cheese, a standard centres for disease control (COC) light trap, an Entry trap and Man Landing Catches (MLC). Comparative studies on the efficacy of Limburger cheese and Milk cream' as odour baits for sampling African …
