Early Days: Genomics And Human Responses To Infection, Minghsun Liu, Stephen J. Popper, Kathleen H. Rubins, David A. Relman Jan 2006

Early Days: Genomics And Human Responses To Infection, Minghsun Liu, Stephen J. Popper, Kathleen H. Rubins, David A. Relman

United States Department of Veterans Affairs: Publications

DNA microarray-based gene transcript-profiling of the responses of primates to infection has begun to yield new insights into host–pathogen interactions; this approach, however, remains plagued by challenges and complexities that have yet to be adequately addressed. The rapidly changing nature over time of acute infectious diseases in a host, and the genetic diversity of microbial pathogens present unique problems for the design and interpretation of functional genomic studies in this field. In addition, there are the more common problems related to heterogeneity within clinical samples, the complex, non-standardized confounding variables associated with human subjects and the complexities posed by the …

Share And Share Alike: Increasing Access To Government-Funded Inventions Under The Bayh-Dole Act, Gary Pulsinelli Jan 2006

Share And Share Alike: Increasing Access To Government-Funded Inventions Under The Bayh-Dole Act, Gary Pulsinelli

Scholarly Works

The Bayh-Dole Act attempts to utilize the incentives of the patent system to persuade companies to develop inventions arising from government-funded research, allowing recipients of government funding to patent their inventions and then sell or license those patents as they see fit. The Act has, in many respects, succeeded in its goal of getting the results of government-funded research into the hands of industry, but sometimes at the cost of limiting or taxing future research. Thus, commentators have proposed changes to the Act that will help avoid these costs without destroying the benefits. One such proposal would require the National …

African Americans’ Trust And The Medical Research Community, Nneka O. Mokwunye Ma Jan 2006

African Americans’ Trust And The Medical Research Community, Nneka O. Mokwunye Ma

Journal of Health Ethics

African Americans have been victims in many of the medical atrocities involving human subject research. It is well established that African Americans are less likely to enroll in research protocols and have more distrust of the medical field than any other ethnic group due to the Tuskegee Syphilis Study. Researchers must be responsible for creating a trustworthy environment. The creation of a cultural competency curriculum designed specifically for training researchers is warranted and will help open the communication barrier between researcher and participant. Trust must be created before the distrust of the medical research community will be resolved. This paper …

What We Know About H5n1 (The Bird Flu) Virus And … People, Pets, Songbirds, Tanya Graham

SDSU Extension Extra Archives

We know that most people in Asia who have become infected with H5N1 (the bird flu virus) have been exposed while slaughtering, de-feathering, and butchering sick or dead domestic poultry. Only one outbreak of human H5N1 disease (in Azerbaijan) has involved wild birds as the most likely source of infection for humans. Following an outbreak of H5N1 in wild swans, humans who plucked the feathers from dead swans (for pillows) were likely exposed to the virus while collecting feathers. Of seven people who became ill, four later died. Scientists suspect there may be a genetic susceptibility to H5N1 virus in …

What We Know About H5n1 (The Bird Flu) Virus And … Hunting Upland Game Birds And Waterfowl, Tanya Graham

SDSU Extension Extra Archives

You have to assess for yourself the risks of running into H5N1 bird flu while hunting. Hunters should routinely monitor this website (http://sdces.sdstate.edu/avianflu/), since we learn more information about highly pathogenic H5N1 avian influenza virus with the discovery of each new case in birds, mammals, or humans. In the field you may come upon representatives of the USDA, USF&WS, and state wildlife agencies testing approximately 100,000 wild birds across the flyways for evidence of avian influenza viruses, including H5N1. They may ask you for specimens from your birds. Your cooperation will assist them in learning more about H5N1.

The Problem Of Averting Global Catastrophe, Scott Barrett Jan 2006

The Problem Of Averting Global Catastrophe, Scott Barrett

Chicago Journal of International Law

I think the odds are no better than fifty-fifty that our present civilization on Earth will survive to the end of the present century. Our choices and actions could ensure the perpetual future of life (not just on Earth, but perhaps far beyond it, too). Or in contrast, through malign intent, or through misadventure, twenty-first century technology could jeopardise life's potential, foreclosing its human and post-human future. What happens here on Earth, in this century, could conceivably make the difference between a near eternity filled with ever more complex and subtle forms of life and one filled with nothing but …

Antibiotic Resistant And Coliform Bacteria In The Ohio River; 2002 To 2004, Lisa Marie Smith Jan 2006

Antibiotic Resistant And Coliform Bacteria In The Ohio River; 2002 To 2004, Lisa Marie Smith

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

During 2002 and 2003 samples, collected every five miles along the Ohio River, were analyzed for total cultivable bacteria, ciprofloxacin resistant bacteria, erythromycin resistant bacteria, tetracycline resistant bacteria, and fecal coliforms. During 2004 samples were analyzed for total cultivable bacteria, ciprofloxacin resistant bacteria, sulfamethizole resistant bacteria, tetracycline resistant bacteria, Virginiamycin resistant bacteria, total coliforms, and Escherichia coli. The objectives of this study were to systematically collect data on fecal coliforms, E. coli, and antibiotic resistant bacteria in the Ohio River and its major tributaries; to determine if antibiotic resistance populations are correlated to each other or to coliforms; and …
