The Health Condition Of Older Women In Ghana: A Case Study Of Accra City, Chuks J. Mba Nov 2006

The Health Condition Of Older Women In Ghana: A Case Study Of Accra City, Chuks J. Mba

Journal of International Women's Studies

In the context of increased rural-urban migration, social exclusion of some of the recent urban arrivals and the sharp change in life style in urban communities, some of the most critical health problems of older people may be found in cities. This paper attempts to characterize the general health condition of older women (50 years and over) in Accra, Ghana’s capital city. It employs secondary analysis of data from the Accra Women’s Survey, 2004. The findings broadly suggest that an overwhelming majority of older women lack basic education, are not in any form of paid employment, and are widowed, separated …

What Are They Saying: Voices From The Inner City? Lived Experience Of Inner City African American Adolescents With Asthma, Othello Childress Phd

Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to investigate the lived experience of African-American adolescents with asthma who reside in an inner city community. The research in this area of interest is sparse, yet the morbidity and mortality rates related to asthma within the African-American population are greater than the general population. This study offers the experience of living with asthma from the perspective of the young African-American adolescent. Using phenomenological methodology, the nurse researcher selected 13 African-American adolescents; aged 12 to 15, who reside and attend middle school in the inner city. All of the participants had a confirmed medical …

Rumor Propagation On Random And Small World Networks, Deana B. Olles Nov 2006

Rumor Propagation On Random And Small World Networks, Deana B. Olles

Theses

In this work; three specific dynamical systems models, the Basic, Maki-Thompson, and Daley-Kendall, are used to model rumor transmission on social networks. Rumor flow is a measure of the time it takes for the rumor to completely pass through a specified network. Comparisons between random social networks and a small world social networks yield the faster transmission of a rumor over a small world network.

Using unique adjacency matrices that define our random networks, observations of some characteristics of the random networks will be made that are specific to this type of graph. Differences in the constructs of the two …

Collected Faculty Scholarship

Panulirus argus Virus 1 (PaV1) is the first virus known to be pathogenic to a wild lobster. It infects the Caribbean spiny lobster P. argus from the Florida Keys, and has a predilection for juveniles. The monitoring of the virus in wild populations and study of its behavior in the laboratory require the development of reliable diagnostic tools. A sensitive and specific fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) assay was developed for detection of PaV1. The lower detection limit using a 110 bp DNA probe in a dot-blot hybridization for PaV1 DNA was 10 pg of cloned template PaV1 DNA and …

Purification And Preconcentration Of Genomic Dna From Whole Cell Lysates Using Photoactivated Polycarbonate (Ppc) Microfluidic Chips, Małgorzata A. Witek, Shawn D. Llopis, Abigail Wheatley, Robin L. Mccarley, Steven A. Soper Oct 2006

Purification And Preconcentration Of Genomic Dna From Whole Cell Lysates Using Photoactivated Polycarbonate (Ppc) Microfluidic Chips, Małgorzata A. Witek, Shawn D. Llopis, Abigail Wheatley, Robin L. Mccarley, Steven A. Soper

Faculty Publications

We discuss the use of a photoactivated polycarbonate (PPC) microfluidic chip for the solid-phase, reversible immobilization (SPRI) and purification of genomic DNA (gDNA) from whole cell lysates. The surface of polycarbonate was activated by UV radiation resulting in a photo-oxidation reaction, which produced a channel surface containing carboxylate groups. The gDNA was selectively captured on this photoactivated surface in an immobilization buffer, which consisted of 3% polyethylene glycol, 0.4 M NaCl and 70% ethanol. The methodology reported herein is similar to conventional SPRI in that surface-confined carboxylate groups are used for the selective immobilization of DNA; however, no magnetic beads …

Uncertainty In Predictions Of Disease Spread And Public Health Responses To Bioterrorism And Emerging Diseases, Bret D. Elderd, Vanja M. Dukic, Greg Dwyer Oct 2006

Uncertainty In Predictions Of Disease Spread And Public Health Responses To Bioterrorism And Emerging Diseases, Bret D. Elderd, Vanja M. Dukic, Greg Dwyer

Faculty Publications

Concerns over bioterrorism and emerging diseases have led to the widespread use of epidemic models for evaluating public health strategies. Partly because epidemic models often capture the dynamics of prior epidemics remarkably well, little attention has been paid to how uncertainty in parameter estimates might affect model predictions. To understand such effects, we used Bayesian statistics to rigorously estimate the uncertainty in the parameters of an epidemic model, focusing on smallpox bioterrorism. We then used a vaccination model to translate the uncertainty in the model parameters into uncertainty in which of two vaccination strategies would provide a better response to …

Spatial Confidentiality And Gis: Re-Engineering Mortality Locations From Published Maps About Hurricane Katrina, Andrew J. Curtis, Jacqueline W. Mills, Michael Leitner Oct 2006

Spatial Confidentiality And Gis: Re-Engineering Mortality Locations From Published Maps About Hurricane Katrina, Andrew J. Curtis, Jacqueline W. Mills, Michael Leitner

Faculty Publications

Background: Geographic Information System (GIS) can provide valuable insight into patterns of human activity. Online spatial display applications, such as Google Earth, can democratise this information by disseminating it to the general public. Although this is a generally positive advance for society, there is a legitimate concern involving the disclosure of confidential information through spatial display. Although guidelines exist for aggregated data, little has been written concerning the display of point level information. The concern is that a map containing points representing cases of cancer or an infectious disease, could be re-engineered back to identify an actual residence. This is …

Microfabrication And Evaluation Of Planar Thin-Film Microfluidic Devices, Bridget Ann Peeni Oct 2006

Microfabrication And Evaluation Of Planar Thin-Film Microfluidic Devices, Bridget Ann Peeni

Theses and Dissertations

Over the past 15 years, research in the field of microfluidics has rapidly gained popularity. By seeking to miniaturize and automate separation-based analysis, microfluidic research seeks to improve current methods through decreased cost, analysis time, and sources of contamination. My work has focused on developing a novel fabrication method, based on standard microfabrication techniques, to create thin-film microfluidic devices. This microfabrication format makes it possible to generate devices that provide high efficiencies, enable mass fabrication, and provide a platform capable of integrating the microfluidic and electronic components necessary for a micro-total analysis system (μ-TAS). Device fabrication combines the processes of …

When Dr Tony Barker designed and built the first modern TMS device in 1985 in Sheffield, England, he probably could not have predicted then how things would evolve with his ‘ fancy gadget’ (Barker et al., 1985). For the first time he had built a machine powerful enough to non-invasively induce currents within the brain and spinal cord. Because TMS can create focal transient lesions, as well as measure brain excitability and regional connectivity, neuroscientists all around the world are now busily using it to understand the brain. TMS research is shown at every major neuroscience meeting now, with articles …
