Alumina Waveguide Characterization And Sparrow Biosensor Modeling, Pavan Kumar Samudrala Dec 2006

Alumina Waveguide Characterization And Sparrow Biosensor Modeling, Pavan Kumar Samudrala

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Sensors based on evanescent wave techniques have the potential to detect minute change in refractive index arising from surface modifications. The biosensor device architecture evaluated in this work is the SPARROW (Stacked Planar Affinity Regulated Resonant Optical Waveguide) structure. This architecture can operate as a biosensor through the change in the coupled optical power resulted from antigen bonding to the bio-layer. Its stacked film arrangement with no lateral patterning offers a potentially less complex structure for fabrication. This thesis describes the process developed to optically characterize the alumina waveguides of the SPARROW device and investigates waveguide film quality as a …

Conduct Disorder And Future Substance Abuse: Factors Affecting Drug Treatment Outcome, Matthew E. Goldfine Dec 2006

Conduct Disorder And Future Substance Abuse: Factors Affecting Drug Treatment Outcome, Matthew E. Goldfine

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Prior research has demonstrated a relation between Conduct Disorder (CD), its severity (total number of symptoms), and substance use disorder (SUD). The current study examined 105 opioid dependent adults for a history of CD and treatment outcome characteristics over a 16 week SUD treatment program. Results demonstrate the effects of CD in regards to poorer improvement of summed Addiction Severity Index composite scores and amphetamine use. Improvement in cocaine use was found to be associated with a CD diagnosis. CD severity was found to lead to poorer improvement as measured by psychiatric impairment and alcohol intoxication. However, participants with increased …

Assessment And Evaluation Of Noise Controls On Roof Bolting Equipment And A Method For Predicting Sound Pressure Levels In Underground Coal Mining, Rudy J. Matetic Dec 2006

Assessment And Evaluation Of Noise Controls On Roof Bolting Equipment And A Method For Predicting Sound Pressure Levels In Underground Coal Mining, Rudy J. Matetic

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Over-exposure to noise remains a widespread and serious health hazard in the U.S. mining industries despite 25 years of regulation. Every day, 80% of the nation's miners go to work in an environment where the time weighted average (TWA) noise level exceeds 85 dBA and more than 25% of the miners are exposed to a TWA noise level that exceeds 90 dBA, the permissible exposure limit (PEL). Additionally, MSHA coal noise sample data collected from 2000 to 2002 show that 65% of the equipment whose operators exceeded 100% noise dosage comprise only seven different types of machines; auger miners, bulldozers, …

Perspectives Of 12th Grade Students, Their Families, And School Officials Related To Affordability And Accessibility Of The West Virginia Promise Scholarship Program At Logan High School, Craig S. Mcclellan

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

With only 14% of West Virginia's population over 25 years old possessing a bachelor's degree, the lack of a skilled workforce often thwarted state legislators' attempts to attract new industry to the state's struggling economy. To address workforce qualification concerns, state educational stakeholders implemented a merit-based scholarship program with average requirements in 2002. The West Virginia PROMISE (Providing Real Opportunities for Maximizing In-state Student Excellence) Scholarship Program goals include encouraging high school students to work harder, and to entice more graduates to attempt post-secondary work at in-state institutions.;This qualitative study was designed to discover the perceptions of five high school …

An Analysis Of The Relationship Between Faculty Perception Of Administrative Support And The Faculty Perceived Levels Of Implementation Of Good Teaching Practice In Distance Education, Carol L. Fugitt Dec 2006

An Analysis Of The Relationship Between Faculty Perception Of Administrative Support And The Faculty Perceived Levels Of Implementation Of Good Teaching Practice In Distance Education, Carol L. Fugitt

An Examination Of Self Identity And Learning Styles: A Qualitative Study Within The Home Health Care Setting, Margo Kraft Dec 2006

An Examination Of Self Identity And Learning Styles: A Qualitative Study Within The Home Health Care Setting, Margo Kraft

Student Scholarship

Home health care practitioners interact with patients via a learning process. Research has proven that reciprocal learning and expert learning styles are the primary methods of knowledge sharing in these home health care settings. The research conducted uncovered three major themes regarding knowledge sharing in home health care--self-identity, learning orientation, and resilience. A conceptual model was developed using these learning concepts in relationship to effective patient outcomes. Our research demonstrated that these home health care practitioners predominately uses two types of learning styles. One of these styles, reciprocal learning, transfers the education responsibility to the patient. The process of a …

How Farm Workers Learn To Use And Practice Biosecurity, Julie Delabbio Dec 2006

How Farm Workers Learn To Use And Practice Biosecurity, Julie Delabbio

Journal of Extension

Biosecurity is any practices, policies, or procedures employed on a farm to prevent and/or control disease entering a farm, or moving around a farm. Using Grounded Theory methodology, the study reported here investigated biosecurity use among workers at finfish recirculation aquaculture facilities in the U.S. and Canada. Farm workers learned to use and continually practice biosecurity through a three-phase, step-wise process of orientation, routine, and thoughtful approach. Certain elements in the work environment and different characteristics of the individual worker influenced the worker's practice of biosecurity on a farm. The findings are relevant to biosecurity practice in all livestock-farming industries.

Significant relationships existed between program and demographic characteristics and perceived attitude about 4-H competitions.

Administrative Law, Martin M. Wilson, Jennifer A. Blackburn Dec 2006

Administrative Law, Martin M. Wilson, Jennifer A. Blackburn

Mercer Law Review

This Article surveys cases from the Georgia Supreme Court and the Georgia Court of Appeals from June 1, 2005 through May 31, 2006 in which principles of administrative law were either illuminated or formed an important piece of the decisionmaking. For a change, the Authors observed a significant decrease in the number of reported cases during the survey period, but that drop should certainly not be interpreted as any type of trend. No attempt has been made to survey cases that would properly fall under categories of more specific articles in this issue, although some degree of overlap is inevitable …

Domestic Relations, Barry B. Mcgough, Gregory R. Miller

Mercer Law Review

This survey period saw continued changes to domestic relations law in Georgia. The Georgia General Assembly completed its sweeping revisions of the child support guidelines. The electorate passed an amendment to the Georgia Constitution defining "marriage." The Georgia Supreme Court extended its 2003 pilot project for the third year, agreeing to accept all "non-frivolous" applications filed in divorce and alimony cases during the 2006 calendar year. As a result, all persons interested in domestic relations law have benefited from many more substantive decisions from the appellate courts.

Research Note: Assessing Household Service Losses With Joint Survival Probabilities, Victor Matheson, Robert Baade Dec 2006

Research Note: Assessing Household Service Losses With Joint Survival Probabilities, Victor Matheson, Robert Baade

Economics Department Working Papers

Traditional analyses of household service losses in personal injury and wrongful death litigation calculate the losses over the expected lifetime of the injured or deceased individual. In fact, the losses to the surviving family members are more accurately described by using joint survival probabilities of the injured or deceased person and their survivors, or a “joint life expectancy.” The use of joint probabilities will always serve to reduce expected household service losses and these reductions can be especially significant when the deceased is significantly younger than the surviving spouse or if the survivor has a relatively low remaining life expectancy.

Integration Without Unification: An Argument For Pluralism In The Biological Sciences, Sandra D. Mitchell, Michael R. Dietrich Dec 2006

Integration Without Unification: An Argument For Pluralism In The Biological Sciences, Sandra D. Mitchell, Michael R. Dietrich

Dartmouth Scholarship

In this article, we consider the tension between unification and pluralism in biological theory. We begin with a consideration of historical efforts to establish a unified understanding of evolution in the neo‐Darwinian synthesis. The fragmentation of the evolutionary synthesis by molecular evolution suggests the limitations of the general unificationist ideal for biology but not necessarily for integrating explanations. In the second half of this article, we defend a specific variety of pluralism that allows for the integration required for explanations of complex phenomena without unification on a large scale.
