A Method To Increase The Power Of Multiple Testing Procedures Through Sample Splitting, Daniel Rubin, Sandrine Dudoit, Mark J. Van Der Laan Jun 2006

A Method To Increase The Power Of Multiple Testing Procedures Through Sample Splitting, Daniel Rubin, Sandrine Dudoit, Mark J. Van Der Laan

U.C. Berkeley Division of Biostatistics Working Paper Series

Consider the standard multiple testing problem where many hypotheses are to be tested, each hypothesis is associated with a test statistic, and large test statistics provide evidence against the null hypotheses. One proposal to provide probabilistic control of Type-I errors is the use of procedures ensuring that the expected number of false positives does not exceed a user-supplied threshold. Among such multiple testing procedures, we derive the ``most powerful'' method, meaning the test statistic cutoffs that maximize the expected number of true positives. Unfortunately, these optimal cutoffs depend on the true unknown data generating distribution, so could never be used …

Collaborative Leadership And The Design Of A School-Based Chemical Health Service System, Susan K. Hedlund Jun 2006

Collaborative Leadership And The Design Of A School-Based Chemical Health Service System, Susan K. Hedlund

Theses and Graduate Projects

This work-related project used strategies of collaborative leadership behavior to facilitate the design and implementation of a county-wide, comprehensive, and coordinated school-based chemical health service system. People involved in the design included representatives from school districts, county government departments, chemical dependency treatment agencies, nonprofit organizations, and a parent. The goal of this project was to create an effective, sustainable, and cohesive collaboration through the use of a facilitation process that illustrated the principles of collaborative leadership. The project demonstrated that interagency collaboration, along with effective leadership skills, can be successful in achieving meaningful system change that benefits adolescents and their …

Capture Of Airborne Nanoparticles In Swirling Flows Using Non-Uniform Electrostatic Fields For Bio-Sensor Applications, Jaesung Jang, Demir Akin, Kwan Seop Lim, Steve Broyles, Michael R. Ladisch, Rashid Bashir Jun 2006

Capture Of Airborne Nanoparticles In Swirling Flows Using Non-Uniform Electrostatic Fields For Bio-Sensor Applications, Jaesung Jang, Demir Akin, Kwan Seop Lim, Steve Broyles, Michael R. Ladisch, Rashid Bashir

Other Nanotechnology Publications

Collection of biological particles is the first and critical step for any biological agent detection system. Towards our goal of capturing and detecting airborne biological entities in real time, here we investigate on the design of an electrostatic particle capture system. We report on the capture of airborne 100 nm diameter polystyrene nanoparticles as a model system, in swirling flows under non-uniform electrostatic fields with an electrospray aerosol generator and a homemade particle collector. The particle collector has five positive electrodes on the bottom and one large grounded electrode on the top. The nanoparticles coming into the collector were slowed …

A Test Of Targeted And Passive Capture Of Australian Elapids With A Brown Tree Snake Trap, Ian D. Temby, Richard M. Engeman Jun 2006

A Test Of Targeted And Passive Capture Of Australian Elapids With A Brown Tree Snake Trap, Ian D. Temby, Richard M. Engeman

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

All reptiles in Australia receive statutory protection. However, Australia is home to many of the world’s most highly toxic venomous snakes, and when these snakes, or similar-looking snakes, come into human proximity, conservation issues are routinely disregarded and the snakes are killed. A secure and effective snake trap could allow dangerously venomous snakes to be removed from the vicinities of humans in safety (for both humans and snake). Towards this end, we conducted a demonstration trial to see if the trap widely used on Guam to capture brown tree snakes (Boiga irregularis) could be applied in a suburban …

The Frat Volume 104 Number 02 April, May & June 2006, The National Fraternal Society Of The Deaf (Nfsd)

2001-2006

The Frat was the official member publication of the National Fraternal Society of the Deaf (NFSD). First established in 1902, the publication ran for just over a century, until its closure in 2006.---NFSD was an insurance business established in 1901. Its purposes were to provide insurance to mainly Deaf members, to serve as an advocate for the Deaf, and to provide community service and recreational opportunities through divisional activities. The existing insurance coverage was transferred to the Catholic Order of Foresters in 2005. The NFSD disbanded in 2007.---The Frat's main purpose was to keep members apprised of the activities of …

Awards Annual Report: Fiscal Year 2006, Office Of The Vice President For Research

Office of the Vice President for Research

It is a pleasure for me to release this annual report, which summarizes the University of New Mexicos (UNM) sponsored activities for fiscal year 2006 (i.e., July 1, 2005 - June 30, 2006, FY06). The purpose of this report is to present statistics of FY06 sponsored research, public service and instruction efforts at the main campus, the Health Sciences Center (HSC), and the branch campuses. UNM faculty have continued their commitment to excellence by seeking sponsored project support and producing scholarly and creative works. While the majority of research at UNM is faculty-based, there is a noticeable level of activity …

Woman To Woman: A Music Therapist's Experience Of Working With A Physically Challenged And Non-Verbal Woman, Carolyn Arnason Jun 2006

Woman To Woman: A Music Therapist's Experience Of Working With A Physically Challenged And Non-Verbal Woman, Carolyn Arnason

Music Faculty Publications

The phrase "woman to woman" implies that relationships between women have particular qualities and levels of understanding that value the female perspective (Gilbert & Scher 1999). This case study describes my experience as a female music therapist and pianist working for four years with Sarah (pseudonym), a physically challenged, intelligent woman who is non-verbal. Salient aspects of the improvisational music therapy sessions were use ofself as music therapist, building a collaborative relationship, working with subtle and non-verbal responses, interpretive flexibility and musical transparency. There were also dimensions of the therapeutic process that enlarged the musical relationship such as silence, "being …

Teacher Professionalism., Christopher K. Shon Jun 2006

Teacher Professionalism., Christopher K. Shon

Faculty Publications and Presentations

Is teaching a profession? This article compares teachers with other professionals, such as medical doctors or lawyers, in professional knowledge, autonomy, and commitment to the welfare of the clientele. The implications for teacher professionalism include establishment of national/state standards for professional teachers, increased autonomy in teacher education, salary increase, and opportunities for promotion. However, there still remains a question of whether there will be a genuine improvement in the quality of education with “professional” teachers.
