Nonmetro/Metro Migration: Economic And Noneconomic Outcomes, Don E. Albrecht Jun 2006

Nonmetro/Metro Migration: Economic And Noneconomic Outcomes, Don E. Albrecht

Journal of Rural Social Sciences

Throughout U.S. history, millions of Americans have migrated between nonmetro and metro areas. Both economic and noneconomic factors have been thought to be important in motivating individuals and families to migrate. Economic opportunities have generally been better in metro communities prompting extensive levels of nonmetro to metro migration. At the same time, nonmetro communities have been felt to offer the advantages of safety, being closer to nature, and having more conservative religious and family values. In this analysis, data from recent General Social Surveys were used to compare the economic and noneconomic outcomes for nonmetro and metro migrants compared with …

Other Bird Strike and Aviation Materials

Birds come with the territory at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida, which usually doesn't mind when any of the nearby Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge's 310 species of birds swoop through for a visit.

But one particular type of bird is causing concern: vultures. That's why NASA plans to test special radar to track any vultures around Launch Pad 39B during the countdown to liftoff of Space Shuttle Discovery on mission STS-121.

Model Studies Towards The Total Synthesis Of Lyconadin A Via An Acyl Radical Cascade Reaction, Koudi Zhu Jun 2006

Model Studies Towards The Total Synthesis Of Lyconadin A Via An Acyl Radical Cascade Reaction, Koudi Zhu

Theses and Dissertations

Lyconadin A is an alkaloid possessing a unique structure and antitumor activity. The total synthesis of Lyconadin A was proposed via an acyl radical cascade reaction. To investigate the possibility and stereoselectivity of the cascade cyclization, phenyl selenoester 16 was chosen as a model substrate to study the 7-exo-5-exo radical cyclization. A synthetic route to phenyl selenoester 16 was developed. The 7-exo-5-exo radical cyclization was found to occur with a high yield and excellent stereoselectivty. Attempts were also tried to synthesize another radical precursor 14 albeit with less success. A synthetic pathway to the synthesis of 14 as well as …

A revolution in thinking and redefinition of traditional scholarship by prioritising teaching skills and achievements has led to the birth of the Teaching Portfolio, designed to carry a comprehensive and dynamic record of the teaching activities of the faculty. A teaching portfolio documents the faculty’s teaching scholarship and effectiveness. It is a record of selected information on one’s teaching achievements, skills and strategies and dynamically represents the faculty’s growth, progress and teaching record. The author suggests a template for the Teaching Portfolio of a Medical Educator, which consists of four parts: (1) evaluation, (2) personal professional development, (3) learning processes …

Incidence And Outcome Of Severe Hyponatremia In Children And Young Adults : A Single Institution Experience, Zakia Al-Lamki, Mahfooz A. Farooqui, Saeed

Sultan Qaboos University Medical Journal

Objective: Our two main objectives are to assess the incidence and the outcome of severe hyponatremia in young hospitalized patients. Method: We retrospectively reviewed the incidence and outcome of severe hyponatremiac (Na <125 mmol/l) inpatients less than 18 years of age, admitted as consecutive admissions during one calender year. Psuedohyponatremia and artifactual hyponatremia were excluded. Patients’ demographics, clinical features, laboratory, treatment and outcomes were recorded. Results: Of 3561 admissions of patients less than 18 years of age, 20 developed severe hyponatremia. Nausea, vomiting, irritability, clouded sensorium and seizures were the most common symptoms and signs. Underlying central nervous system disease, pneumonia and malignancy were major co-morbid conditions. The initial volume status was determined as hypervolemia (n=7), hypovolemia (n=7) and euvolemia (n=6). Iatrogenic (diuretics 5 and hypotonic fluids 7) hyponatremia accounted for 60% of all cases. Mortality was 20%. Conclusion: Patients receiving intravenous hypotonic fluids should be closely monitored for the development of hyponatremia. The common etiology of hyponatremia in our studied cohort of patients is iatrogenic.

An Investigation Into The Spectral Music Idiom And Its Association With Visual Imagery, Particularly That Of Film And Video, Brett Mabury

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

The exploration of timbre became increasingly significant throughout the 20th century, with some composers making it the essence of their music. This artistic development occurred in conjunction with a technological advancement that together would contribute to the birth of what is now called `spectral music' . Using computers, composers have been able to discover the spectra of frequencies that exist at different strengths for various sounds. The information realised then became the spectral musician' s primary ingredients for composing some extraordinary works. Despite its innovative quality, spectral music is yet to gain widespread interest amongst ensembles, orchestras and ultimately the …
