The Challenges International Students Face In Adjusting To Their New Status As Graduate Students: An Exploratory Case Study, Vincent Womujuni Jul 2006

The Challenges International Students Face In Adjusting To Their New Status As Graduate Students: An Exploratory Case Study, Vincent Womujuni

Dissertations and Theses

Over the last several years, the number of international students attending colleges and universities in the United States has increased substantially. While considerable time, effort, and university resources are often devoted to the recruitment of international students, it is unclear how well institutions are meeting the needs of these students. This growing number of international students requires foreign exchange professionals and university administrators to better understand the reasons why international students pursue higher education in the United States and the challenges they face.

This exploratory case study is to examine the challenges international graduate students encounter in adjusting to their …

The I Can Save Program: School-Based Children's Saving Accounts For College, Margaret Sherraden, Lissa Johnson, William Elliott, Shirley Porterfield, William Rainford

Center for Social Development Research

This paper examines an innovative college savings program for public elementary school children. The project is based on the proposition that children will gain financial knowledge and be more likely to view college as an attainable goal because they are accumulating savings to help pay for higher education. As the latest in a long history of school-based savings programs, this program pioneers the idea of matched savings in which children and family savings in the students’ accounts are matched one to one up to a maximum of $3,500. Findings suggest that the principal, teachers, children, and their families are enthusiastic …

Asset-Building Initiatives In Peru And Colombia: Pilot Study And Directions, Yves Moury

Center for Social Development Research

Three asset-based poverty alleviation initiatives were conducted in Peru and Colombia. The first, a six-year asset-building pilot program, was undertaken in southern Peru as an important component of the Corredor Puno-Cusco Project, a rural finance support project focusing on savings mobilization, savings enhancement, and economic development. The second, the Southern Highlands Project in rural Peru, began in early 2005. The third, the Activos project in rural southern Colombia, was in the pre-approval stage as of this writing, with its final design still in a discussion and adjustment process with the Colombian government. The goals of all three projects were to …

Economic Empowerment As A Health Care Intervention Among Orphaned Children In Rural Uganda, Fred M. Ssewamala, Stacey Alicea, William M. Bannon Jr., Leyla Ismayilova

Center for Social Development Research

This study evaluated an economic empowerment intervention to reduce HIV risks among orphaned children in Uganda. Children (n=97) were randomly assigned to receive an economic intervention or to a control arm. Data obtained at baseline and 12-month follow-up revealed differences on HIV prevention attitudes, educational plans, and child-caregiver relationship for intervention arm children relative to control children. Findings lend support to use of economic empowerment interventions for HIV risk reduction among orphaned children.

Using Individual Development Accounts To Save For A Home: Are There Differences By Race?, Michal Grinstein-Weiss, Kristen Wagner Jul 2006

Using Individual Development Accounts To Save For A Home: Are There Differences By Race?, Michal Grinstein-Weiss, Kristen Wagner

Center for Social Development Research

Research indicates that homeownership is a key variable in wealth accumulation. Using data from the American Dream Demonstration, this study examines the performance of low-incomeblacks and whites saving for homeownership through Individual Development Accounts (IDAs), a matched saving program. Results show black IDA participants saved smaller amounts and less frequently. Furthermore, findings suggest institutional variables have different associations with savings for blacks and whites. Implications for policymakers and program administrators are discussed regarding differential targeting of race groups in the design and implementation of programs aimed toward increasing savings and assets accumulation for low-income and minority households.

Due Process And Punitive Damages: The Error Of Federal Excessiveness Jurisprudence, A. Benjamin Spencer Jul 2006

Due Process And Punitive Damages: The Error Of Federal Excessiveness Jurisprudence, A. Benjamin Spencer

Faculty Publications

The Supreme Court, in a line of several cases over the past decade, has established a rigorous federal constitutional excessiveness review for punitive damages awards based on the Due Process Clause. As a matter of substantive due process, says the Court, punitive awards must be evaluated by three "guideposts" set forth in BMW of North America v. Gore: the degree of reprehensibility of the defendant's conduct, the ratio between punitive and compensatory damages, and a comparison of the amount of punitive damages to any "civil or criminal penalties that could be imposed for comparable misconduct." Following up on this pronouncement …

Rho Kinase As A Novel Molecular Therapeutic Target For Hypertensive Internal Anal Sphincter, Satish Rattan, Marcio A.F. De Godoy, Chirag A. Patel

Department of Medicine Faculty Papers

Background & Aims: An increase in Rho kinase (ROK) activity has been associated with the agonist-induced sustained contraction of the smooth muscle, but its role in the pathophysiology of spontaneously tonic smooth muscle is not known.

Methods: Present studies examined the effects of ROK inhibitor Y 27632 in the tonic smooth muscle of the rat internal anal sphincter (IAS) vs. in the flanking phasic smooth muscle of the rectum (RSM). In addition, studies were performed to determine the relationship between the decreases in the basal IAS tone vs. the ROK activity. Confocal microscopic studies determined the cellular distribution of smooth …

Endoscopic Sphincterotomy With Or Without Cholecystectomy For Choledocholithiasis In High Risk Surgical Patients: A Decision Analysis, Ali Siddiqui, Pradnya Mitroo, Thomas E. Kowalski, David Loren

Department of Medicine Faculty Papers

Background

Laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LC) is recommended for patients with choledocholithiasis after ERCP with sphincterotomy (ES) and stone extraction.

Aim: We designed a decision model to address whether ES alone versus ES followed by LC (ES + LC) is the optimal treatment in high-risk patients with choledocholithiasis.

Methods:

Our cohort were patients with obstructive jaundice who have undergone an ES with biliary clearance. Recurrent biliary complications over a 2-year period stratified by gallbladder status (in/out) and age-stratified surgical complication rates were obtained from the literature. Failure of therapy was defined as either recurrent symptoms or death attributed to biliary complications.

Results …

Physical Therapy Students’ Application Of A Clinical Decision-Making Model, Jeannie Wessel, Renee Williams, Beverley Cole

Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice

Purpose: Most educational programs in the health sciences present their students with a clinical decision-making model (CDMM) to help them define and treat client problems with a client-centered approach. However, little is known about how well students apply such a model in a clinical setting. The purpose of this study was to determine whether physical therapy students used a CDMM to make clinical decisions, and how well they used it. Method: Fifty-four physical therapy students in their first full-time clinical placement were asked to write up one of their client cases explaining how they made their clinical decisions and evaluating …

Justifying Core Faculty Assessment Of Students’ Clinical Performance Using Cognitive Flexibility Theory: A Case Example, Revenda Greene, Gloria Lawson Rogers Jul 2006

Justifying Core Faculty Assessment Of Students’ Clinical Performance Using Cognitive Flexibility Theory: A Case Example, Revenda Greene, Gloria Lawson Rogers

Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice

Allied health practitioners who are also educators understand their dual responsibility to educate students and to serve as gatekeepers to their profession. They are challenged with selecting and preparing students to practice in a skilled, competent manner. During the formal educational process, the academic and clinical aspects of allied health education are equally important. However, the assessment of the students' clinical skills is usually left to clinical instructors who are not members of the core faculty, and whose clinical skills and expectations may vary widely. While not minimizing the role of clinical faculty in the education of health care professionals, …

Assessing The Administrative Support Needs (Library And Technical) Of Allied Health Students Enrolled In A Distance Education Program, Amanda Carroll-Barefield Jul 2006

Assessing The Administrative Support Needs (Library And Technical) Of Allied Health Students Enrolled In A Distance Education Program, Amanda Carroll-Barefield

Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice

As more emphasis is placed on offering education to the distance student and monies are spent to provide these services, institutions must ensure they reap the rewards of the investment. One avenue to ensure success in distance education is the implementation of strong student support services. This is a task that will take the teamwork of educators, administrators, instructional technologists/designers, and support personnel. For institutions transitioning to a distance format, measures must be taken to ensure that the learner, no matter what the method of delivery, has access to equivalent student support services. One approach to measuring this aspect is …

The Constitutional Right Not To Cooperate - Local Sovereignty And The Federal Immigration Power, Huyen Pham Jul 2006

The Constitutional Right Not To Cooperate - Local Sovereignty And The Federal Immigration Power, Huyen Pham

Faculty Scholarship

This article examines an important but up to now, still unexplored area in the federalism debate: May the federal government require local governments to cooperate with the enforcement of immigration law or other federal scheme? Or may local governments constitutionally refuse to provide that cooperation?

I use immigration law enforcement as a case study to argue that the current legal framework, which allows the federal government to mandate local cooperation, ignores the significant federalism harms that federal cooperation laws impose. And these federalism harms are not simply limited to the immigration field. In other areas where federal and local governments …

Taking Care Of Your Nutritional And Physical Needs, Joan Hegerfeld

SDSU Extension Extra Archives

When asked what they value most, many people will say their health. However, when faced with a stressful situation that will not go away, the same people forget all about their health and start worrying. Farm and ranch families struggle with extreme stress from uncontrollable forces such as weather, low market prices, or farm machinery breaking down. For many farmers, ranchers, and farm workers, decision making and adjusting to the extraordinary stress consumes their whole thinking, their whole days, their sleepless nights. Their livelihood is dependent upon forces over which they have no control. Eating right and getting adequate amounts …

The Optimal Law Enforcement With Mandatory Defendant Class Actions, Nelson Rodrigues Netto Jun 2006

The Optimal Law Enforcement With Mandatory Defendant Class Actions, Nelson Rodrigues Netto

ExpressO

In this article we argue that the optimal law enforcement system is based on an ideal mechanism to prevent and redress harms in the mass information society. This goal is achieved by means of mandatory defendant class actions.

The idea of mass society has evolved in time since the beginning of the industrialization in the 18th century. At that time, the transformation of the means of production from artisanal craftwork to large scale machinery work, forged the concept of mass production. Nowadays, massive and expeditious relationships are created by sophisticated communications links, especially the Internet, furnishing services and goods, which …
