Pseudostationary Phase For Solid Phase Extraction, Qing Zhao Aug 2006

Pseudostationary Phase For Solid Phase Extraction, Qing Zhao

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

A unique pseudostationary phase for Solid Phase Extraction is presented. This pseudostationary phase consists of surfactant, which is initially immobilized onto hydrophilic cation exchange resin. The surfactant chain through hydrophobic interactions extracts hydrophobic analytes in the same manner as conventional bonded alkyl moieties on silica based non-polar sorbents. Although hydrophobic analytes can be efficiently trapped on commercially available non-polar sorbents (i.e. Ci8 silica), organic solvents that are necessary to break strong hydrophobic interactions between the analytes and the sorbent are harmful. They are also incompatible for direct introduction into a reversed phase liquid chromatographic set up. In the presented approach, …

Using Initiative To Achieve Autonomy: A Model For Advanced Practice In Medical Nutrition Therapy, Annalynn Skipper, Nancy M. Lewis

Department of Nutrition and Health Sciences: Faculty Publications

The purpose of this research was to generate a model of advanced medical nutrition therapy (MNT) practice based on descriptions of their clinical activities provided by advanced- level MNT practitioners. A qualitative approach using grounded theory methodology was employed. The model of advanced MNT practice was based on interviews with 21 credentialed advanced practice registered dietitians from across the United States and Canada. Verbatim transcripts of the interviews were coded for aggregation into themes and subthemes. The resulting model included a single overarching theme: using initiative to achieve autonomy. The five subthemes are aptitude, attitude, expertise, context, and approach. The …

Role Of The Stable Signal Peptide Of Junín Arenavirus Envelope Glycoprotein In Ph-Dependent Membrane Fusion, Joanne York, Jack H. Nunberg Aug 2006

Role Of The Stable Signal Peptide Of Junín Arenavirus Envelope Glycoprotein In Ph-Dependent Membrane Fusion, Joanne York, Jack H. Nunberg

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

The envelope glycoprotein of the arenaviruses (GP-C) is unusual in that the mature complex retains the cleaved, 58-amino-acid signal peptide. Association of this stable signal peptide (SSP) has been shown to be essential for intracellular trafficking and proteolytic maturation of the GP-C complex. We identify here a specific and previously unrecognized role of SSP in pH-dependent membrane fusion. Amino acid substitutions that alter the positive charge at lysine K33 in SSP affect the ability of GP-C to mediate cell-cell fusion and the threshold pH at which membrane fusion is triggered. Based on the presumed location of K33 at or near …

Revisiting The Ethics Of Hiv Prevention Research In Developing Countries, Charles Weijer, Guy Leblanc Aug 2006

Revisiting The Ethics Of Hiv Prevention Research In Developing Countries, Charles Weijer, Guy Leblanc

Philosophy Presentations

Issues: We present key aspects of our paper, commissioned by UNAIDS in 2005, entitled, “Revisiting the ethics of HIV prevention research in developing countries.” In 2004 and 2005 we witnessed the closure or suspension of three international clinical trials testing tenofovir in the prevention of HIV infection in high risk groups due to the failure to provide free treatment to those who seroconvert during the conduct of the study. We examine critically moral claims for the provision of treatment to those who seroconvert in HIV prevention trials and ask whether it is a matter of moral obligation or moral negotiation? …

Agricultural Pesticide Use And Risk Of T(14;18)-Defined Subtypes Of Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma, Brian C.-H. Chiu, Bhavana J. Dave, Aaron Blair, Susan M. Gapstur, Shelia Hoar Zahm, Dennis D. Weisenburger Aug 2006

Agricultural Pesticide Use And Risk Of T(14;18)-Defined Subtypes Of Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma, Brian C.-H. Chiu, Bhavana J. Dave, Aaron Blair, Susan M. Gapstur, Shelia Hoar Zahm, Dennis D. Weisenburger

United States Public Health Resources

Pesticides have been specifically associated with the t(14;18)(q32;q21) chromosomal translocation. To investigate whether the association between pesticides and risk of non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) differs for molecular subtypes of NHL defined by t(14; 18) status, we obtained 175 tumor blocks from case subjects in a population-based case-control study conducted in Nebraska between 1983 and 1986. The t(14;18) was determined by interphase fluorescence in situ hybridization in 172 of 175 tumor blocks. We compared exposures to insecticides, herbicides, fungicides, and fumigants in 65 t(14;18)-positive and 107 t(14;18)-negative case subjects with those among 1432 control subjects. Multivariate polytomous logistic regression was used to …

Characterization And Feasibility Study Of A Near Infrared Ccd Imager For Monitoring Tumor Hemodynamics, Manan Goel Aug 2006

Characterization And Feasibility Study Of A Near Infrared Ccd Imager For Monitoring Tumor Hemodynamics, Manan Goel

Bioengineering Theses - Archive

Prostate cancer is one of the most common types of cancers diagnosed among North American men. Chemotherapy is generally used to target advanced metastatic prostate cancer. Near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) has been previously investigated to monitor the hemodynamic changes in rat prostate tumors; however, the previous study with NIRS is limited by its spatial resolution. The goal of this study is to characterize an NIR, CCD imager and to explore the feasibility of using the CCD imager to non-invasively monitor hemodynamic changes in rat prostate tumors during gas intervention. Firstly, studies were conducted to characterize the CCD imager and understand …

Impact Of A Pre-Combustion Retrofit Device On Vehicular Emissions: A Case Study, Sri Harsha Kanukolanu

Civil Engineering Theses - Archive

Vehicular emissions are a major cause of air pollution in the cities worldwide. Increased numbers of vehicles and the vehicle miles traveled by them every year means that the emissions are going to have a detrimental effect on the life and environment of this planet. Various control strategies are employed by the transportation and air quality managers at the state and regional levels to improve the ambient air quality. This research was conducted as part of the North Central Texas Council of Governments' Aftermarket Technology and Fuel Additive Research Program, its effort to make the DFW region's air cleaner. The …

Effectiveness Of Signal Coordination As An Emission Reduction Measure For Vehicles, Rajashi I. Parikh

Civil Engineering Theses - Archive

Air Pollution is a significant health and environmental concern. Vehicular emissions are major contributors to many air pollution problems. There is growing interest in reducing carbon dioxide emission because of the alarming increase in the pollution caused by petroleum resulting global warming issue. Various studies have found that U.S vehicles emit half of the CO2 emitted from vehicle all over the world. Dallas Fort Worth is a non-attainment area for ozone and it is required to achieve NAAQS standards by 2010. NOx and VOCs from the automobile are a major precursor of ozone formation in the atmosphere. Traffic signal retiming …

An Exploration Of Supportive Relationships In The Lives Of Academically Successful Individuals With Autism, Jodi Ann Robledo Phd

Dissertations

This study explored 17 dyads of academically successful people with autism and individuals whom they identified as supportive. Four research questions guided this study: 1) How do individuals with autism and the people who support them describe their relationship? Specifically, how was the relationship established, how has it changed, what are the benefits and challenges, what works and what does not, and how is the relationship maintained? 2) From the perspective of both the individuals with autism and the supporting individuals, how do their relationships provide support for the individual with autism? 3) How does the mode of communication influence …
