The Effects Of Avian Influenza Outbreak On U.S. Poultry Prices, Shang-Ho Yang Aug 2006

The Effects Of Avian Influenza Outbreak On U.S. Poultry Prices, Shang-Ho Yang

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Even in the absence of proven human-to-human transmission of the disease, the uncertainty surrounding bird flu could devastate regional economic growth and financial markets. Confirmed cases of human infection from several subtypes of avian influenza infection have been reported since 1997. According to WHO (World Health Organization), experts indicate that there is a possible risk of infection to people who have contact with infected birds or surfaces that have been contaminated with secretions or excretions from infected birds during an outbreak of avian influenza among poultry. On May 8, 2006, WHO reported on 207 cases that resulted in 115 people's …

Understanding The Ottawa Convention’S Obligations To Landmine Victims, Kerry Brinkert Aug 2006

Understanding The Ottawa Convention’S Obligations To Landmine Victims, Kerry Brinkert

The Journal of Conventional Weapons Destruction

The Ottawa Convention is unique for a number of reasons, not the least of which being that the Convention has linked obligations concerning the use of a weapon with a requirement that Convention signatories assist a victim wounded by that weapon. When the Convention was adopted in September 1997, this aspect, while lauded by diplomats and activists, was certain to be a challenge to implement. The real work began once the Convention entered into force and states had to act on this responsibility. This article discusses in particular the Convention’s victim assistance obligations.

Adolescent Perceptions Of Appropriate Parental Reactions In Moral And Conventional Social Domains, Laura M. Padilla-Walker, Gustavo Carlo Aug 2006

Adolescent Perceptions Of Appropriate Parental Reactions In Moral And Conventional Social Domains, Laura M. Padilla-Walker, Gustavo Carlo

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

Research suggests that adolescents’ ratings of the appropriateness of parental reactions are influenced by several constructs, including adolescents’ perceptions of the type of parental reaction, the emotions felt by the adolescent and parental intentions. However, little is known regarding how these constructs are differentially predictive of appropriateness in different socialization contexts. One hundred and twenty-two adolescents (mean age = 16.87 years) answered questions regarding past situations in antisocial and prosocial contexts, and in moral and conventional domains. Different parental reactions were reported across moral and conventional domains. In addition, the appropriateness of parental responses varied across domain. Namely, in antisocial …

Zimbabwe, Country Profile

The Journal of Conventional Weapons Destruction

During the War of Liberation between 1976 and 1979, the Rhodesian Army laid minefields along the northern and eastern borders of Zimbabwe (formerly known as Rhodesia). The Rhodesian Army handed over minefield records to the Zimbabwe National Army in 1980. The minefields were emplaced in standard patterns and were marked and posted with danger/warning signs, but many of these signs have been stolen, destroyed or removed over time. It was initially estimated that 2.5 million anti-personnel mines were emplaced in Zimbabwe and the remaining minefields stretch 218 miles. Zimbabwe signed the Anti-personnel Mine Ban Convention on Dec. 3, 1997, and …

Shifting Radioactivity Risks: A Case Study Of The K-65 Silos And Silo 3 Remediation And Waste Management At The Fernald Nuclear Weapons Site, Institute For Energy And Environmental Research (Ieer), Annie Makhijani, Arjun Makhijani

Institute for Energy and Environmental Research (IEER)

The Feed Materials Production Center near Cincinnati, Ohio, often called the Fernald Plant or simply Fernald, was the largest producer of uranium metal for the nuclear weapons complex during the Cold War. Its processes for uranium production ranged from ore processing, to conversion of uranium into various chemical forms, to scrap recovery, to machining of uranium metal. Fernald also processed thorium-232, but in much smaller amounts.

A large volume of radioactive waste was created at Fernald. Fernald also received radioactive wastes dating from the World War II Manhattan Project, which created the bombs that were used to destroy Hiroshima and …

Analysis Of Treatment Effects On The Microbial Ecology Of The Human Intestine, Anna L. Engelbrektson, Joshua R. Korzenik, Mary Ellen Sanders, Brian G. Clement, Gregory Leyer, Todd R. Klaenhammer, Christopher L. Kitts Aug 2006

Analysis Of Treatment Effects On The Microbial Ecology Of The Human Intestine, Anna L. Engelbrektson, Joshua R. Korzenik, Mary Ellen Sanders, Brian G. Clement, Gregory Leyer, Todd R. Klaenhammer, Christopher L. Kitts

Biological Sciences

A large number of studies have investigated gastrointestinal microbiota and changes in the gastrointestinal community. However, a concern in these studies is how best to assess changes in gastrointestinal community structure. This paper presents two different human trials where the fecal terminal restriction fragment length polymorphism data sets were analyzed to search for treatment effects. Principle components analysis and cluster analysis based on grouped data are compared with analysis of data by subject using distance coefficients. Comparison with baseline within an individual before grouping by treatment provided a clearer indication of treatment effects than did an evaluation of data grouped …

Characteristics Of Marijuana Users Compared To Multiple Drug Users, Swateja Nimkar

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

This study examines drug use behavior in a self-described sample of users. Comparisons are made between subjects whose only illicit drug use is marijuana and those who use both marijuana and other drugs. Data are from the DRUGNET study (1996, 1998, 1999), a multi-panel study conducted over the internet from 1996 - 1998. This sample was predominately white, male, young, and college educated. The majority of respondents were employed with incomes in the $50,000 - $60,000 (USD) range. A subset of respondents to the DRUGNET survey was selected for this analysis. Respondents had to be at least 18 years of …

Best Practices For The English Language Learner And The Special Education Student In The Inclusive Classroom, Catherine R. Brown

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

Teachers in the United States have had to adapt, modify and collaborate in order to meet the educational diversity within their classrooms. The purpose of this project and the resulting Power Point presentation was for the author to identify from the research literature effective instructional strategies which resulted in the increased educational performance of the English Language Learner (ELL), and the special education student. Effective strategies identified by research and discussed in the Power Point presentation were: (a) direct instruction, (b) scaffolded instruction, (c) strategy instruction, (d) vocabulary instruction, (e) grouping practices, (f) monitoring student progress/feedback, and (g) differentiation/modification/ accommodation. …

Handheld Technology: Impact On Student Learning, Patricia M. Corwin Aug 2006

Handheld Technology: Impact On Student Learning, Patricia M. Corwin

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

The author in this project presents research on: (a) handheld technology in the classroom, (b) challenges of handheld technology, (c) pedagogical benefits of handheld technology in the classroom, and (d) methods of technology implementation. The utilization of handheld technology in the classroom improves students' learning of concepts and skills. A major concern of the educator is that, with the use of technology, students will bypass the bridge to genuine understanding, and instead obtain a relatively effortless solution to standard problems through technology aids, while they present the appearance of mastery of a concept. However, research indicates that technology, when implemented …

Environmental Contamination And House Values: A Study Of Market Adjustment, Katherine Kiel Aug 2006

Environmental Contamination And House Values: A Study Of Market Adjustment, Katherine Kiel

Economics Department Working Papers

In many communities throughout the United States, contaminated sites are identified and addressed by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). In each of these communities, the EPA presents a plan of action and provides the community with information about progress being made. Does the housing market adjust quickly after announcements by EPA concerning the existence and toxicity of Superfund sites? Other studies have shown that the levels of house prices fall when people suspect there is a problem, and again when the EPA announces that the site is toxic (e.g. Kiel, 1995), but how can we tell when or if the …

The Effect Of Varying Cadence In Cycle Ergometry On Submaximal Predictions Of Peak Oxygen Uptake, Zachary Callahan Aug 2006

The Effect Of Varying Cadence In Cycle Ergometry On Submaximal Predictions Of Peak Oxygen Uptake, Zachary Callahan

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect that varying cadence had on the ability of a submaximal cycle ergometry test to accurately predict peak oxygen uptake (VO2) using the standard YMCA protocol workloads. There has been limited scholarship investigating the effect that varying cadence has on trained cyclists and almost none on untrained participants. For this study twelve moderately healthy participants (age: 20.75 ± 1.87, body fat: 15.8 ± 4.91 %) who did not use cycling as part of their workout regime performed a peak VO2 cycle test and three randomized submaximal tests. The three submaximal tests …

Strategies For Reducing Mosquito-Borne Disease Vulnerability In Equine Populations: A Kentucky Case Study, Sara Dalton Aug 2006

Strategies For Reducing Mosquito-Borne Disease Vulnerability In Equine Populations: A Kentucky Case Study, Sara Dalton

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

This research examined equine management practices that limit or contribute to the spread of West Nile virus and other mosquito-bome disease. I hypothesize that there is a relationship between equine management practices and outbreaks of mosquito-borne disease in horse populations. Improved and appropriate mosquito habitat management may limit the risk of mosquito-borne disease in humans and horses by helping to lower the mosquito populations. The study goals were to recognize equine management practices and mosquito prevention practices that foster outbreaks of mosquito-borne disease. This study used a questionnaire for county level analysis of equine management practices and the relationship to …

Body Image And Weight Related Behaviors: The Role Of Gender, Ethnicity, And Immigration, Tina Hoover Aug 2006

Body Image And Weight Related Behaviors: The Role Of Gender, Ethnicity, And Immigration, Tina Hoover

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Obesity rates have aggressively climbed in both children and adults, and notably for particular ethnic and lower socioeconomic status groups. National data from 1999-2002 have shown that approximately one-half of African-American women were obese, as compared to one-third of Caucasian women. It has been substantiated that a significant portion of overweight or obese children will become obese adults, with a number of factors identified that may influence obesity in children including gender, ethnicity, and environment. This study analyzed secondary data from The Youth Behavioral Risk Factor Survey administered to students at BGHS to identify variations in body image for particular …

Factors Affecting Condom Use Among College Students, Amar Kanekar Aug 2006

Factors Affecting Condom Use Among College Students, Amar Kanekar

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The absence of consistent and correct usage of condoms increases the risk of STI's and HIV/AIDS. However, most studies done to date across the nation indicate a low usage of condoms among college students. In fall of 2004, the National College Health Assessment was administered to a random sample of students at a state comprehensive university in south central Kentucky. Findings revealed that among the sexually active students, approximately half never used condoms during vaginal intercourse. Further among students engaging in anal sex, an alarmingly high proportion --95%- reported never using condom during this act. These findings along with differences …

The Effects Of Item Grouping On Test Reliability, Holly Mackey Aug 2006

The Effects Of Item Grouping On Test Reliability, Holly Mackey

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Optimal ordering of items on a multidimensional test has been the focus of several studies. In all but one study, previous research centered on measures of personality or opinion. The current study examines item grouping effects for a cognitive ability test. Two forms of a cognitive ability test containing four constructs (verbal ability, basic computation, number series, and spatial visualization) were prepared. Form A consisted of items grouped by construct, and Form B had items dispersed randomly throughout the test. The order of items within a construct remained the same for both forms. Tests were administered to 186 undergraduate psychology …
