Religion And Family Relational Health: An Overview And Conceptual Model, Loren Marks

Faculty Publications

This paper presents a review of research addressing religion and family relational health. Strengths of the extant data include the correlation of three dimensions of religious experience (religious practices, religious beliefs, and religious community) with certain aspects of mother–child, father–child, and marital relationships and specific connections between the three dimensions of religious experience and family relationships are identified. Key weaknesses in the research at present include a paucity of research examining the hows, whys, and processes involved behind identified religion–family correlations and a lack of data on non-nuclear families, families of color, interfaith families, and non-Christian religions including Judaism and …

The Origin Of The Compelling State Interest Test And Strict Scrutiny, Stephen A. Siegel Aug 2006

The Origin Of The Compelling State Interest Test And Strict Scrutiny, Stephen A. Siegel

ExpressO

This article argues that strict scrutiny did not originate in equal protection cases. Rather, it originated in the First Amendment in the late 1950s and early 1960s and migrated from there to the Equal Protection Clause in the late-1960s. The Article begins by discussing strict scrutiny analytically, situating it as one of many doctrines through which the Supreme Court gives heightened protection to favored constitutional interests. It then traces the origin of strict scrutiny’s compelling state interest requirement to the First Amendment. It shows that the compelling state interest test initially appeared in First Amendment litigation in 1957 and that …

Gold And Magnetite Nanoparticles As Sensors Of Conformational Changes In Proteins, Larisa Radu Aug 2006

Gold And Magnetite Nanoparticles As Sensors Of Conformational Changes In Proteins, Larisa Radu

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

The folding of proteins was investigated by using helical polypeptides attached to gold or magnetite nanoparticle surfaces. Depending on type and loading of the polypeptide on the surface of gold nanoparticles, pH, temperature, presence of different ions in the solution, and influence of different mechanical factors, conformational changes in the polypeptide occurred. The aggregation of the gold nanoparticles related to the folding of the polypeptide caused shifts in color of the solutions from red to blue that were measured by UV-Vis spectrometry. Different ligands were attached on the surface of magnetite nanoparticles. The resulting structures induced modifications in the characteristics …

A Review Of Energy And Environmental Policy For Offshore Liquefied Natural Gas (Lng) Terminals, William D. Whitmore

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

The Maritime Transportation Security Act of 2002 amended the Deepwater Port Act of 1974 allowing energy industries to construct offshore liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminals. The industry friendly amendments weakened environmental regulations resulting in quick approval of several terminals that utilize environmentally damaging open-loop regasification systems. The objectives of this case study are to determine what influences national energy security and energy industries have in offshore LNG policy development and what energy policy tactics are utilized by the George W. Bush administration. Senate testimony, industry publications, federal legislation, and permit case studies reveal the prominence of concerns for national energy …

Factors Influencing Intent To Stay Of Nursing Faculty In Selected Schools Of Nursing In Sixteen States Within The Southern Region, Debbie Garbee

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

The current nursing faculty shortage makes understanding intent to stay a step toward slowing the exodus of faculty. A wealth of literature exists on reasons nursing faculty leave academia; however, little research exists on reasons nursing faculty stay. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to discover a parsimonious set of predictor variables for intent to stay in nursing education. An online survey was conducted over six weeks in the spring of 2006 using four instruments, Index of Job Satisfaction, Mentoring Scale, Organizational Commitment Questionnaire, and Leadership Behavior Description Questionnaire. A random cluster sample of schools of nursing in states …

Governance Changes In Four Urban School Systems: A Comparative Analysis Of Preconditions For Adopting Reforms, Alessandra Jerolleman

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

There is an almost universal belief that our school system is failing to educate its students. At the same time there is little agreement regarding what the problems are and how to correct them. Many urban school districts are turning to drastic reform measures, oftentimes attempting one major reform after another. This paper will address the question of whether cities which have opted to significantly change their educational system share any common characteristics related to this decision. In particular this paper will focus on four cities: Boston, Chicago, New Orleans, and Philadelphia. Given the current problems with education, and the …

Resilience And Resistance: Public Narratives From Post-Katrina New Orleans, Heather Price

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Narratives of resilience and resistance are applied by public editors in post-Katrina New Orleans in hopes of reordering the city's ruptured narrative. Using qualitative methods and grounded theory, the textual analysis of local newspaper editorials and letters to the editor, collected from the six month period between August 29, 2005 and February 28, 2006, have revealed categories of hope and struggle in acts of collective reaffirmation; of civility and leadership in expectations of personal transformation; and of self-reliance and civic engagement in acts of resistance. Discussion will focus on how editorialists work to create public narratives that will unite their …

Relations Between Parenting, Family Context, And Emotion Regulation In The Development Of Psychopathology In Young Maltreated Children, Lara Rachel Robinson Aug 2006

Relations Between Parenting, Family Context, And Emotion Regulation In The Development Of Psychopathology In Young Maltreated Children, Lara Rachel Robinson

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Emotion regulation has been recognized as a fundamental process in early socioemotional development; however, investigation into the relations between parenting styles, practices, and emotion regulation in maltreating families has been severely lacking in the literature. The current study observationally examined the relations between specific parenting practices, parenting styles, and maltreated children's emotion regulation examining the same child with both a maltreating and non-maltreating caregiver. The findings of this study indicate that parenting practices within both maltreating and non-maltreating caregivers affect child emotion regulation and emotionality. Positive, supportive parenting increases child effortful control and positive affect while decreasing anger. Alternately, negative, …

Paramagnetic lanthanide(III) complexes that contain hyperfine-shifted exchangeable protons offer considerable advantages over diamagnetic molecules as chemical exchange saturation transfer (CEST) agents for MRI. As part of a program to investigate avenues to improve the sensitivity of such agents, the CEST characteristics of europium(III) macrocyclic complexes having appended hydroxyethyl groups were investigated. The CEST spectrum of the asymmetrical complex, EuCNPHC3+, shows five distinct peaks for each magnetically nonequivalent exchangeable proton in the molecule. The CEST spectra of this complex were fitted to NMR Bloch theory to yield exchange rates between each of six exchanging proton pools (five on the …
