Avian Influenza In Wild Birds: Status As Reservoirs, And Risks To Humans And Agriculture , Larry Clark, Jeffrey Hall

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Influenza A viruses are naturally reservoired in wild bird populations, in which they generally exist as low-pathogenic subtypes. Historically, concern about avian influenza virus (AIV) in wild birds is related to its potential effects on agriculture and human health, and not to health issues of wild bird populations. Several subtypes (primarily H5 and H7) have caused severe outbreaks of disease in domestic bird populations. In some cases, genetic and spatial temporal analyses suggest that these high-pathogenic subtypes may originate in wild bird populations that transmit low-pathogenic forms to domestic birds; after passage in domestic birds, the low-pathogenic subtypes convert to …

Issues In Establishing A Culture Of Assessment In A Complex Academic Health Sciences Library, Sally Bowler-Hill, Janis Teal Aug 2006

Issues In Establishing A Culture Of Assessment In A Complex Academic Health Sciences Library, Sally Bowler-Hill, Janis Teal

Posters and Presentations

This poster reports HSLICs experience creating a culture of assessment through the administration of customer satisfaction surveys for its library and technology support services. HSLIC's goal is to create a unified assessment culture in which services are evaluated regularly, generating a picture of the overall effectiveness of the organization. The LibQUAL+\u2122 survey was employed to evaluate library services. A technology support survey was developed in-house because an environmental scan did not reveal any standardized surveys for technology support services. The use of varying survey methodologies limits HSLIC's ability to integrate survey data and assess overall strengths and weaknesses besides adversely …

Measuring Social Stressors In Organizations: The Development Of The Interpersonal Conflict In Organizations Scale (Icos), Valentina Bruk Lee Aug 2006

Measuring Social Stressors In Organizations: The Development Of The Interpersonal Conflict In Organizations Scale (Icos), Valentina Bruk Lee

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Interpersonal conflict in organizations has been recognized as a leading social stressor across occupations with detrimental effects on employee well-being and organizational outcomes. However, reliable and valid measures of conflict are scarce and even the most widely used scales are limited by weaknesses in construct definition. In order to address the need for an improved measurement tool, the 63-item Interpersonal Conflict in Organizations Scale (ICOS) was developed. The ICOS was based on a comprehensive conceptualization of conflict that defines the construct on the basis of three definitional components: disagreement, interference, and negative emotion (Barki & Hartwick, 2004). In addition, the …

Parental Consent And Notification Laws In The Abortion Context: Rejecting The "Maturity" Standard In Judicial Bypass Proceedings, Anna Bonny Aug 2006

Parental Consent And Notification Laws In The Abortion Context: Rejecting The "Maturity" Standard In Judicial Bypass Proceedings, Anna Bonny

ExpressO

The choice to become a parent, to give a baby up for adoption, or to terminate a pregnancy presents a life-altering decision for a minor. The majority of states require minors to engage their parents or legal guardians in their choice to obtain an abortion, but not in decisions to give their babies up for adoption or to become parents. Though the Supreme Court has held that parental consent and notification laws do not infringe on a minor's constitutional rights if judicial bypass options are available, the reality of these judicial proceedings demonstrates a biased and unworkable legal avenue. Even …

Probing Environmental Discretion: An Argument For Regulating Greenhouse Gases From Motor Vehicles Under The Clean Air Act, Omari O. Jackson Aug 2006

Probing Environmental Discretion: An Argument For Regulating Greenhouse Gases From Motor Vehicles Under The Clean Air Act, Omari O. Jackson

ExpressO

The topic of my comment centers on a discussion of the upcoming U.S. Supreme Court decision in the Massachusetts v. EPA case. In this case, the D.C. Circuit addressed the issue of whether the Clean Air Act authorized the EPA Administrator to control greenhouse gas emissions of new motor vehicles and engines. A three-judge panel voted 2-1 against reviewing the EPA’s decision that it lacked authority under federal law to regulate them. Late last term, the Supreme Court granted certiorari to hear arguments to resolve this controversy. This comment asserts that the Clean Air Act authorizes the EPA to regulate …
