A Wireless Method For Monitoring Medication Compliance, Jeffrey Scott Jonas
A Wireless Method For Monitoring Medication Compliance, Jeffrey Scott Jonas
Theses
There are many devices on the market to help remind patients to take their pills, but most require observation by a caregiver to assure medication compliance. This project demonstrates three modes to detect pill removal from a pillbox: a switch under the pills, a reflective type photointerrupter and a transmissive "electric eye" photosensor. Each mode exhibited blind spots or other failures to detect pill presence, but by combining modes with complementary characteristics, the accuracy of pill detection is greatly increased.
Two methods of caregiver notification are demonstrated: text messages transmitted via an attached cellular phone, or the status is collected …
Individual Cell Pressure Control In An Air Mattress For The Prevention Of The Pressure Sores, Kapilchandra Anand
Individual Cell Pressure Control In An Air Mattress For The Prevention Of The Pressure Sores, Kapilchandra Anand
Theses
Many kinds of pressure-relieving mattresses have been developed to prevent pressure sores in patients with spinal cord injuries (SCIs) and obesity. Current technology uses alternating air pressure mattress, foam and low pressure mattress for reducing the incidence of pressure sores in SCI and obesity patients. These mattresses do not have control of pressure in individual air chambers. They are open loop system and they do not receive any feedback from the system. They have at the most control of two different pressures. The purpose of this study is to improve the current assistive technology in reducing pressure sores and to …
An Ergonomic Job Analysis Of A Work Process Within A Glovebox, Tamara Mcnair
An Ergonomic Job Analysis Of A Work Process Within A Glovebox, Tamara Mcnair
Theses
Gloveboxes have been used in various industries to protect the user and environment from hazardous materials and/or isolate the materials from environmental contamination. As the use of gloveboxes continues to grow in an effort to reduce contamination and the dependency of personal protective equipment as well as increase the level of safety through containment, technical design specifications have been studied and investigated to great lengths. Unfortunately, ergonomic design criteria for this enclosed and restricting workstation have not been extensively investigated or documented.
This research evaluated ergonomic risk factors associated with the use of a glovebox in a pharmaceutical production facility. …
Effect Of Glove Port Height On Upper Body Stress For Performing Laboratory Work, Jason Mark Williams
Effect Of Glove Port Height On Upper Body Stress For Performing Laboratory Work, Jason Mark Williams
Theses
Glove boxes are used in many industries to constrain environmental contamination and protect the worker from harmful or hazardous exposures. This research specifically evaluates the effect of height of the glove box arm ports on the efficiency of task performance and physiological costs of work for the glove box users.
Seven male and two female participants performed liquid mixing and vial filling tasks within a portable glove box. The tasks were designed to simulate common glove box tasks performed in pharmaceutical and laboratory settings. Each participant repeated the designed tasks while the glove port height was set at two different …

Detection Of Proteins By Two-Photon Excitation Of Native Fluorescence, Li Li
Detection Of Proteins By Two-Photon Excitation Of Native Fluorescence, Li Li
Theses and Dissertations
Proteins are of primary importance to the structure and function of all living cells. Study of proteins relies on the ability to separate a complex mixture so that individual proteins can be more easily processed by other techniques. Since protein samples often exist at low concentration in a small volume, the trend in chemical analysis is toward micro total analysis systems (µTAS) or lab-on-a-chip devices. Among µTAS separation methods, the relatively new electric field gradient focusing (EFGF) technique has shown potential. It focuses and separates analytes based on their electrophoretic migration in an opposing hydrodynamic flow. The detection principles that …

Fences And Deer-Damage Management: A Review Of Designs And Efficacy, Kurt C. Vercauteren, Michael J. Lavelle, Scott Hygnstrom
Fences And Deer-Damage Management: A Review Of Designs And Efficacy, Kurt C. Vercauteren, Michael J. Lavelle, Scott Hygnstrom
United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications
White-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) may cause more damage than any other species of wildlife. These damages include crop loss, automobile and aviation collisions, disease transmission, environmental degradation, and destruction of ornamental plantings. One practical method of controlling deer damage is the use of exclusionary fences. The relatively high cost of labor and materials required to build effective fences has limited most applications to the protection of orchards, vegetable farms, other high-value resources, and mitigation of human health and safety risks. Improvements in fence technology resulting in less expensive, yet effective fences have expanded the use of fences to manage damage …
In-Vitro Characterization Of Boronized Titanium Alloy By Means Of Corrosion And Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy Methods In Simulated Body Fluids, David Anthony Panus
In-Vitro Characterization Of Boronized Titanium Alloy By Means Of Corrosion And Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy Methods In Simulated Body Fluids, David Anthony Panus
Theses
Titanium and titanium alloys are becoming the backbone of medical implants and prosthetics. Titanium alloys are used because of its high biocompatibility and similarity to bone. However, titanium and titanium alloys have a low wear resistance. Titanium and titanium alloys are susceptible to particle erosion, which can cause inflammation, infection, and even implant rejection. Boronizing titanium alloy improves titanium's wear resistance and also improves corrosion resistance.
The target of this research was to characterize the corrosion characteristics of both unboronized and boronized titanium using both electrochemical corrosion methods and Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (ELS) in simulated body fluid. Using electrochemical methods …

Department of Medicine Faculty Papers
Background: The Multicenter Study of Hydroxyurea (HU) in Sickle Cell Anemia (MSH) previously showed that daily oral HU reduces painful sickle cell (SS) crises by 50% in patients with moderate to severe disease. The morbidity associated with this disease is known to have serious negative impact on the overall quality of life(QOL) of affected individuals.
Methods: The data in this report were collected from the 299 patients enrolled in the MSH. Health quality of life (HQOL) measures were assessed in the MSH as a secondary endpoint to determine if the clinical benefit of HU could translate into a measurable benefit …

Scientific Expertise In Policymaking: The Case For Open Review And Patent Reform, Beth Simone Noveck
Scientific Expertise In Policymaking: The Case For Open Review And Patent Reform, Beth Simone Noveck
ExpressO
The Energy Research Advisory Board, the group of external scientific advisors that provided impartial expert advice to the Secretary of Energy since 1978, was disbanded this May. The Administration, like its predecessors, regularly replaces experts on agency advisory panels with ideologues and political allies. We are at the nadir of a historical progression since World War II away from trust in and use of scientific expertise in policymaking. This shift however, has not been countered with greater public participation. Instead, administrative law and theory have developed a model of the managerial administrative authority. The "expertocratic" agency relies on internal expertise …
The Uncertain Future Of Marriage And The Alternatives, Daniel I. Weiner
The Uncertain Future Of Marriage And The Alternatives, Daniel I. Weiner
ExpressO
The cultural and institutional predominance of marriage in our society has lately been challenged by two important social trends: growing dissatisfaction with or indifference to marriage on the part of those eligible to marry, and the emergence of nontraditional families headed by adults who may wish to marry but are presently excluded from doing so. This Essay argues that proactive law reformers have responded to these trends by taking two very different approaches. The first approach, “diversity of forms,” is exemplified by the cultivation of alternatives and substitutes to traditional marriage ranging from same and opposite-sex domestic partnerships and other …
Jumping On The Mommy Track: A Tax For Working Mothers, Jessica C. Kornberg
Jumping On The Mommy Track: A Tax For Working Mothers, Jessica C. Kornberg
ExpressO
“Jumping on the Mommy Track: a Tax for Working Mothers,” was written in response to recent data suggesting that mothers experience a wage penalty unrelated to diminished work productivity or commitment. This Article starts from the assumption that a wage penalty, in combination with already existing disadvantages to working mothers embedded in the tax code, drives women out of the workforce and into less economically efficient activity. The Article proposes remedying this distortion by implementing a targeted regressive tax on working mothers.
Why Guru Nanak Is Another Nail In The Coffin Of West Coast Hotel V. Parrish, John H. Ryskamp
Why Guru Nanak Is Another Nail In The Coffin Of West Coast Hotel V. Parrish, John H. Ryskamp
ExpressO
In Guru Nanak v. Sutter, the Ninth Circuit upheld RLUIPA by accepting its conflation of "individualized assessments" and "substantial burden." Although RLUIPA involved a misreading of Oregon v. Smith, it was a misreading the Ninth Circuit adopted. The question is, why did Sutter counsel allow the misreading of Smith, especially since Smith lost? It is because, in general, the American bar has failed to see that there has been a substantial corrosion of the scrutiny regime established by West Coast Hotel v. Parrish. They are in denial: they can't believe that the scrutiny regime could ever fall. And yet, the …
