Veterinary Science Faculty Publications

The structures of the canine, rabbit, bovine and equine EIF2AK2 genes were determined. Each of these genes has a 5' non-coding exon as well as 15 coding exons. All of the canine, bovine and equine EIF2AK2 introns have consensus donor and acceptor splice sites. In the equine EIF2AK2 gene, a unique single nucleotide polymorphism that encoded a Tyr329Cys substitution was detected. Regulatory elements predicted in the promoter region were conserved in ungulates, primates, rodents, Afrotheria (elephant) and Insectifora (shrew). Western clawed frog and fugu EIF2AK2 gene sequences were detected in the USCS Genome Browser and compared to those of other …

A Unifying Approach For Haplotype Analysis Of Quantitative Traits In Family-Based Association Studies: Testing And Estimating Gene-Environment Interactions With Complex Exposure Variables, Stijn Vansteelandt, Christoph Lange Sep 2006

A Unifying Approach For Haplotype Analysis Of Quantitative Traits In Family-Based Association Studies: Testing And Estimating Gene-Environment Interactions With Complex Exposure Variables, Stijn Vansteelandt, Christoph Lange

COBRA Preprint Series

We propose robust and e±cient tests and estimators for gene-environment/gene-drug interactions in family-based association studies. The methodology is designed for studies in which haplotypes, quantitative pheno- types and complex exposure/treatment variables are analyzed. Using causal inference methodology, we derive family-based association tests and estimators for the genetic main effects and the interactions. The tests and estimators are robust against population admixture and strati¯cation without requiring adjustment for confounding variables. We illustrate the practical relevance of our approach by an application to a COPD study. The data analysis suggests a gene-environment interaction between a SNP in the Serpine gene and smok- …

Erv26p Directs Pro-Alkaline Phosphatase Into Endoplasmic Reticulum–Derived Coat Protein Complex Ii Transport Vesicles, Catherine A. Bue, Christine M. Bentivoglio, Charles Barlowe

Dartmouth Scholarship

Secretory proteins are exported from the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) in transport vesicles formed by the coat protein complex II (COPII). We detected Erv26p as an integral membrane protein that was efficiently packaged into COPII vesicles and cycled between the ER and Golgi compartments. The erv26Δ mutant displayed a selective secretory defect in which the pro-form of vacuolar alkaline phosphatase (pro-ALP) accumulated in the ER, whereas other secretory proteins were transported at wild-type rates. In vitro budding experiments demonstrated that Erv26p was directly required for packaging of pro-ALP into COPII vesicles. Moreover, Erv26p was detected in a specific complex with pro-ALP …

The Group Dynamics Theory Of Executive Compensation, Michael B. Dorff Sep 2006

The Group Dynamics Theory Of Executive Compensation, Michael B. Dorff

ExpressO

The corporate governance debate has focused recently on executive compensation. While defenders of the status quo assert that CEO compensation – and corporate governance generally -- is efficient, critics contend that boards have been captured by powerful CEOs who demand excessive pay unconditioned on their performance. Both sides argue that the evidence garnered from CEO compensation justifies their positions on legal reform of corporate governance as a whole. Defenders of the status quo argue that the system works well as is, as demonstrated by the enormous success of U.S. corporations. Critics concerned about managerial power propose reforms that will increase …

Conceitos De Educação E Escolaridade Entre Mulheres Clientes De Um Centro De Saúde Do Rio De Janeiro, Isabela Cabral Félix De Sousa, Fundação Oswaldo Cruz

Education Policy Analysis Archives (EPAA)

This work has the objective to evaluate concepts of education and schooling reported by women attending a Public Health Clinic in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Using a qualitative research methodology, the selection of women for 60 interviews followed two criteria of maximum variation in the sampling for both the hour of the interview as well as the age of the women. The results indicate that these women had little schooling and a few if any opportunity to take part of educational non-formal courses. The concepts of education and schooling were divided into the following categories: adequate social behavior, value, professional …

Exo-S-Mecamylamine Formulation And Use In Treatment, Douglas Shytle, Paul Sanberg, Mary Newman, Archie A. Silver

USF Patents

A pharmaceutical composition includes a therapeutically effective amount of exo-S-mecamylamine or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof, substantially free of exo-R-mecamylamine in combination with a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier. Preferably the amount is about 0.5 mg to about 20 mg. Medical conditions are treated by administering a therapeutically effective amount of exo-S-mecamylamine or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof, substantially free of its exo-R-mecamylamine, said amount being sufficient to ameliorate the medical condition. The medical conditions include but are not limited to substance addiction (involving nicotine, cocaine, alcohol, amphetamine, opiate, other psychostimulant and a combination thereof), aiding smoking cessation, treating weight gain associated …
