Studies On Cyclooxygenase-1, Its Structure And Splice Variants, And Modulation Of Cyclooxygenase-2 By Inducible Nitric Oxide Synthase And Novel Phytochemicals., Yibing Xu

Theses and Dissertations

Cyclooxygenases (COXs) are of important therapeutic value as they are the target site of aspirin-like drugs. Here I report nine new COX-1 splice variants in chapter 1, which I characterized with regard to heme-binding and other properties. Inducible NO synthase (iNOS) and cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) are co-inducible in many tissues following mitogenic and proinflammatory stimulation. In chapter 2, I investigate the physical and enzymatic properties of human COX-2 and iNOS and demonstrate that, despite reports to the contrary by another laboratory, they do not interact. The only reported COX-1 splice variant to exhibit cyclooxygenase activity has been isolated from …

Overcoming The Achilles Heel Of Copyright Law, Haochen Sun Sep 2006

Overcoming The Achilles Heel Of Copyright Law, Haochen Sun

ExpressO

With the recent proliferation of international, regional and bilateral treaties associated with copyright protection, the three-step test has been hailed as the panacea for measuring the legality of all limitations on copyright. This article challenges the legitimacy of the three-step test as a one-size-fits-all standard for copyright protection and puts forward a proposal to reshape this test. It further argues that the inquiry into the legitimacy of the three-step test necessitates a careful reexamination of the conventional wisdom of copyright law in general and the nature of copyright limitations in particular. Central to this scrutiny are the inquiries into how …

Family Limited Partnerships: The Beat Goes On, Walter D. Schwidetzky Sep 2006

Family Limited Partnerships: The Beat Goes On, Walter D. Schwidetzky

ExpressO

Family limited partnerships ("FLP's") are commonly used for estate planning and estate tax savings. They have come under attack by the IRS. Of late, courts have often held that the assets of an FLP are included in the decedent's estate under section 2036 of the Internal Revenue Code. The article discusses a number of recent, highly important cases in this area and makes a proposal for reform.

Energy Demand And Temperature: A Dynamic Panel Analysis, Andrea Bigano, Francesco Bosello , Giuseppe Marano Sep 2006

Energy Demand And Temperature: A Dynamic Panel Analysis, Andrea Bigano, Francesco Bosello , Giuseppe Marano

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

This paper is a first attempt to investigate the effect of climate on the demand for different energy vectors from different final users. The ultimate motivation for this is to arrive to a consistent evaluation of the impact of climate change on key consumption goods and primary factors such as energy vectors. This paper addresses these issues by means of a dynamic panel analysis of the demand for coal, gas, electricity, oil and oil products by residential, commercial and industrial users in OECD and (a few) non-OECD countries. It turns out that temperature has a very different influence on the …

A Future For The Dead Sea Basin: Water Culture Among Israelis, Palestinians And Jordanians, Clive Lipchin Sep 2006

A Future For The Dead Sea Basin: Water Culture Among Israelis, Palestinians And Jordanians, Clive Lipchin

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

The Dead Sea basin plays a major role for regional economic development (industry, tourism and agriculture) in the Middle East. This potential is threatened by the steady disappearance of the Dead Sea. Since around 1930 the water level of the Dead Sea has fallen by about 25 m, about half of this alone in the last 20 years. The Dead Sea is a transboundary resource shared by Israel, the Palestinian Authority and Jordan. The Dead Sea is the terminal point of the Jordan River watershed and as such, it serves as a barometer for the health of the overall system. …

Covariate Specific Roc Curve With Survival Outcome, Xiao Song, Xiao-Hua Zhou Sep 2006

Covariate Specific Roc Curve With Survival Outcome, Xiao Song, Xiao-Hua Zhou

UW Biostatistics Working Paper Series

The receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve has been extended to survival data recently, including the nonparametric approach by Heagerty, Lumley and Pepe (2000) and the semiparametric approach by Heagerty and Zheng (2005) using standard survival analysis techniques based on two different time-dependent ROC curve definitions. However, both approaches cannot adjust for the effect of covariates on the accuracy of the biomarker. To account for the covariate effect, we propose semiparametric models for covariate specific ROC curves corresponding to the two time-dependent ROC curve definitions, respectively. We show that the estimators are consistent and converge to Gaussian processes. In the case …

Paying For Permanence: Public Preferences For Contaminated Site Cleanup, Anna Alberini, Stefania Tonin, Margherita Turvani, Aline Chiabai

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

We use conjoint choice questions to investigate people’s preferences for income and reductions in mortality risks delivered by contaminated site remediation policies. Our survey is self-administered using the computer by residents of four cities in Italy with severely contaminated sites. We estimate the Value of a Statistical Life to be about €5.6 million for an immediate risk reduction. If the risk reduction takes place 20 years from now, however, the implied VSL is about €1.26 million. The discount rate implicit in the responses to the conjoint choice questions is about 7%. People are willing to pay for permanent risk reductions, …
