The Role Of Reactive Oxygen Species And Pi3k /Akt Signaling In Tumor Angiogenesis., Chang Xia
The Role Of Reactive Oxygen Species And Pi3k /Akt Signaling In Tumor Angiogenesis., Chang Xia
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Tumor angiogenesis is the development of vascularization from pre-existing vessels. It provides the tumors with sufficient nutrients and enables them to break the dormancy. Due to the imbalance of positive and negative angiogenic regulation, tumor blood vessels are usually leaky and chaotic which create accessible avenue for tumor metastasis. Phosphatidylinositol-3-kinases (PI3Ks) are lipid kinases that generate phospholipid second messengers and mediate signal transduction. Mutations of PI3Ks and constitutive activation of PI3K/AKT signaling have been frequently found in many human cancers. Reactive oxygen species are also important second messengers in various physiological and pathological processes, including tumor formation and metastasis and …
Learning Competent Fathering: A Longitudinal Analysis Of Marital Intimacy And Fathering, Kay Bradford, Alan J. Hawkins
Learning Competent Fathering: A Longitudinal Analysis Of Marital Intimacy And Fathering, Kay Bradford, Alan J. Hawkins
Faculty Publications
Although scholars have documented many links between marital relationships and parenting, these associations are not commonly explained in terms of behavior that is learned or achieved over time. This paper examines the idea that good fathering – conceptualized here as competent fathering – is the result of a developmental process, and that a loving, committed relationship between parents creates a context in which traits supportive of caring fathering are likely to be learned and practiced. After setting the stage conceptually, we provide a modest initial test of this hypothesis to discern the associations between three components of marital intimacy (emotional …
The Hippocampus Supports Both The Recollection And The Familiarity Components Of Recognition Memory, Peter E. Wais, John T. Wixted, Ramona O. Hopkins, Larry R. Squire
The Hippocampus Supports Both The Recollection And The Familiarity Components Of Recognition Memory, Peter E. Wais, John T. Wixted, Ramona O. Hopkins, Larry R. Squire
Faculty Publications
The receiver operating characteristic (ROC) has been used to investigate the component processes of recognition memory. Some studies with this technique have been taken to indicate that the hippocampus selectively supports the process of recollection, whereas adjacent cortex in the parahippocampal gyrus supports the process of familiarity. We analyzed ROC data from young adults, memory-impaired patients with limited hippocampal lesions, and age-matched controls. The shape of the ROC changed in similar ways from asymmetric to symmetric, as a function of the strength of memory (strong to weak) in both the young adults and the patients. Moreover, once overall memory strength …
The Family As A Context For Religious And Spiritual Development In Children And Youth, Chris J. Boyatzis, David C. Dollahite, Loren D. Marks
The Family As A Context For Religious And Spiritual Development In Children And Youth, Chris J. Boyatzis, David C. Dollahite, Loren D. Marks
Faculty Publications
Our chapter addresses how the family promotes or hinders transcendence of the self in children, that is, how the family is a context in which spiritual development occurs. Due to space limitations, our emphasis is on socialization and interaction processes within the family and not on other issues such as psychodynamic processes (e.g., Rizzuto, 1979) or faith development (e.g., Fowler, 1981). There are many motivations to explore family socialization of religious and spiritual development. One, family spirituality and religiosity are linked with many desirable outcomes and inversely with negative outcomes in children and youth. (Other chapters in this volume examine …

Women's Body Image, Patriarchy, And Photography: A Pictorial Content Analysis Of National Geographic's Representation Of Women., Kathryn D. Newhouse
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Women have been depicted within media outlets such as magazines as domestic caretakers for generations. While history has at times been positive in its representation of women, especially during World War II and the government’s plea for women to work in industry, the vast majority of media outlets after the war again created the housewife image from the years before the war for women to follow. The popular governmental posters with “Rosie the Riveter” stating, “We Can Do It!” were replaced with images of a happy wife tending house for her husband fresh from the war. While the posters were …
Female Politicians In The Media: Hillary Rodham Clinton And Hsiu-Lien Lu. An Examination Of Patriarchal And Feminist Word Usage In Political News: Case Analyses Of "The Post-Standard (Syracuse, Ny)" And "China Times (Taiwan)"., Yi-Ting Chen
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This thesis examined newspapers’ coverage of two female politicians. One is U.S. Senator and former First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton. The newspaper is The Post-Standard (Syracuse, NY). The other is Hsiu-Lien Lu, the first female vice president of Taiwan. The newspaper is China Times (Taiwan). The research analyzed articles in these two newspapers to determine whether the terms associated with Clinton and Lu were gender neutral, feminist or patriarchal. The study compares how media represent female politicians in the two societies, and further illustrates the similarities and differences in the American and Taiwanese societies. The study found that Hillary Rodham …
A Strategy For Prevention Of Sequestered Carbon Dioxide Seepage From Cbm Formations., Miguel Angel Tovar Torrealba
A Strategy For Prevention Of Sequestered Carbon Dioxide Seepage From Cbm Formations., Miguel Angel Tovar Torrealba
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This study introduces a new strategy for the prevention of post-sequestration carbon dioxide (CO2) seepage to the surface from CBM (coalbed methane) formations that is named the “N ature’s Sequestration Technique” or “N ST.” The objective is to sequester CO2 in a CBM formation for an extensive time period (thousands of years), filling the coal cleat system with formation water. Using a commercial numerical simulator and representative data of the Appalachian basin, we investigated whether or not the presence of water in the cleats helps to sequester CO2 in a coalbed for a long period of time without significant seepage. …
Perceived Constraints And Negotiation Strategies Of Ethnic/Racial Minorities As Predictors Of Recreation Participation., Elizabeth A. Covelli
Perceived Constraints And Negotiation Strategies Of Ethnic/Racial Minorities As Predictors Of Recreation Participation., Elizabeth A. Covelli
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The purpose of this study was to investigate the constraints that non-traditional users face, along with the negotiation strategies that are employed in order to start, continue or increase participation when trying to recreate on a national forest. Nontraditional users were defined as respondents who were not Caucasian. Additionally, both constraints and negotiation strategies were examined to see if they predict participation for non-traditional users. The study took place on the Mt. Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest in Washington, during the summer of 2005. A quantitative survey method was used, with a total of 235 surveys collected. The results showed that over …
Characterization Of A Catalase Gene Associated With Ergot Alkaloids In Aspergillus Fumigatus, And, Studies On An Alternate Lysergyl Peptide Synthetase Gene And Ergopeptine In Neotyphodium Coenophialum., Kerry E. Goetz
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Ergot alkaloids, a category of mycotoxins produced by various fungi, adversely affect both humans and animals. Several plant-associated fungi in the genera Claviceps, Neotyphodium, and Epichloe (order Hypocreales) produce an array of ergot alkaloids. Another fungus, Aspergillus fumigatus that occupies a completely different ecological niche and is classified under the order Eurotiales, also produces ergot alkaloids. The gene clusters predicted to encode the enzymes required for ergot alkaloid production within these species are strikingly similar, however, they are poorly understood. In this study, a gene knockout of the easC gene that encodes a putative catalase resulted in the loss of …

Behold, Ye Shall Have Joy With Me’: A Study On The Lord, The Servant And The Allegory Of The Olive Tree, Dan Belnap, Daniel L. Belnap

In chapter 5 of the book of Jacob, we find a unique text commonly referred to as the allegory of the olive tree. President Joseph Fielding Smith once said that “the parable of Zenos . . . is one of the greatest parables ever recorded.”1 Composed of seventy-seven verses, this allegory is thought to follow the progression of a particular olive tree and its offspring in the Lord’s vineyard. Many readers have commented on the special nature of the allegory, with studies ranging from theological meaning, to linguistic comparisons, to actual viticultural practices. Though these studies differ in content, they …

What Do We Owe Each Other In The Global Economic Order?: Constructivist And Contractualist Accounts, John Linarelli
What Do We Owe Each Other In The Global Economic Order?: Constructivist And Contractualist Accounts, John Linarelli

No legal system deserving of continued support can exist without an adequate theory of justice. A world trade constitution cannot credibly exist without a clear notion of justice upon which to base a consensus. This paper examines two accounts of fairness found in moral philosophy, those of John Rawls and Tim Scanlon. The Rawlsian theory of justice is well-known to legal scholars. Scanlon's contractualist account may be less well-known. The aim of the paper is to start the discussion as to how fairness theories can be used to develop the tools for examining international economic policies and institutions. After elaborating …

Examining Land Use Planning And Zoning Ethics From A Planner’S Perspective: Lessons For All Stakeholders In The Real Estate Game, Patricia E. Salkin
Scholarly Works
This article examines the Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct of the American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP). Only two states, Michigan and New Jersey, license planners as a profession. This makes ability for planners to achieve certification from the AICP important and raises the prominence of the AICP Code of Ethics, since as a condition of membership, each AICP member agrees to abide by the Code.

Domesticating The Exotic Species: International Biodiversity Law In Canada, Natasha Affolder
All Faculty Publications
While a significant body of international and regional agreements now addresses habitat preservation, wildlife protection, and biological diversity, these advances on the international level often fail to be effectively translated into domestic law. In this article, the author argues that international biodiversity law is being treated in Canada as "exotic". It is peppered into parties' submissions without a principled explanation of its role in Canadian law, receives little consideration from the courts, and must ultimately rely on non-legal means of enforcement. The author examines the jurisprudence dealing with four major biodiversity treaties. She notes that the judicial treatment of these …

Measuring Tongue Movements During Speech: Adaptation Of A Magnetic Jaw-Tracking System, Christopher Dromey, Shawn Nissen, Petrea Nohr, Samuel G. Fletcher
Faculty Publications
The purpose of the present investigation was to determine whether measurements of tongue movement during speech could be obtained with an electronic device originally designed to record jaw movements via a magnetized pellet. The findings indicated that the system allowed basic quantification of tongue movements in a straightforward manner. The primary advantages of this system are that no distracting wires are attached to the pellet, and it is much less costly than other systems used for this purpose. Its main disadvantages are that it is unable to track multiple tongue fleshpoints simultaneously, lacks an anatomically based coordinate system, and the …

Mixed Blessings: The Great Lakes Compact And Agreement, The Ijc, And International Dispute Resolution, Austen L. Parrish
Articles by Maurer Faculty
For scholars of international law and international dispute resolution, the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence River Basin Water Resources Compact and Agreement may seem a mixed blessing. On the one hand, they promise environmental cooperation and management of the Great Lakes at an unprecedented scale. The agreements have been heralded as a tremendous advancement in state-provincial relations. On the other hand, international scholars should be nervous for what the agreements signify for international law and dispute resolution. The Compact and Agreement are remarkable for replacing an already functioning regulatory regime: the 1909 Boundary Waters Treaty, administered by the International Joint Commission.

I first met Richard "Dick"Vance Wellman when I was a graduate law student at The University of Michigan. As it turned out, Dick and I taught almost the same courses in our law schools. Perhaps I knew Dick best, however, as a Commissioner on Uniform State Laws.' The Model Probate Code (MPC) was promulgated in 1946 with Professor Lewis Simes, of The University of Michigan, as its Chief Reporter. As its name suggests, the Model Probate Code was intended to be a collection of probate statutes from which the respective states might pick and choose a well-drafted provision on a …

Dick Wellman-A Personal Remembrance, Lawrence W. Waggoner
Georgia Law Review
Dick Wellman was my teacher, mentor, collaborator, colleague, and friend. My law school class at The University of Michigan Law School voted Dick the most enthusiastic member of the faculty, and he was that. Dick devoted his professional life to teaching and scholarship, as most law professors do, but he had another career: Dick was a key player in the Uniform Law Conference,' an organization dedicated to improving private law and promoting legislative uniformity among the states. Through his uniform law work, Dick literally changed the legal landscape in the area of trusts and estates. His path breaking work as …
The Bankruptcy Abuse Creation Act?: Curing Unintended Consequences Of Bankruptcy Reform, Tedra Hobson
The Bankruptcy Abuse Creation Act?: Curing Unintended Consequences Of Bankruptcy Reform, Tedra Hobson
Georgia Law Review
Congress passed the Bankruptcy Abuse Prevention and Consumer Protection Act of 2005 to reduce what many viewed as widespread abuse of the bankruptcy system. The legislation also contained some "consumer friendly" provisions, including two that exclude and exempt certain tax-exempt retirement savings from the bankruptcy estate and from the calculation of disposable income. These sections of the Act may, however, have created new opportunities for abuse. This Note discusses the possibilities for abuse that arise from the change in treatment of retirement savings in bankruptcy and argues that in certain cases, a debtor's use of these exemptions and exclusions violates …

A Reply To Professor Beck, Jason Carter
Georgia Law Review
The 2004 election reinvigorated the debate about Christianity's role in our nation's lawmaking. The election saw increased polarization between the secular left, and the politicized Christian right.' Evangelical Protestants voted overwhelmingly for the Republican candidate, George W. Bush, while the most secular voters voted overwhelmingly for John Kerry.2 The 2004 election emboldened the Christian right. In addition to what they believed was their crucial role in President Bush's victory, the Christian right celebrated the passage of constitutional amendments banning gay marriage in all eleven states where such amendments were on the ballot.? One leader of the Christian right stated that …

The City Of God And The Cities Of Men: A Response To Jason Carter, Randy Beck
Georgia Law Review
Jason initially considers and rejects philosophical positions that call for citizens to put aside their religious beliefs when they participate in the political sphere.' He advocates, instead, the freedom to live a "religiously integrated existence" in all areas of life, including political life. Here, Jason reminds me of another Carter-Professor Stephen L. Carter of the Yale Law School. In The Culture of Disbelief, Professor Carter contends that "[in our sensible zeal to keep religion from dominating our politics, we have created a political and legal culture that presses the religiously faithful to be other than themselves, to act publicly, and …

Pakootas V. Teck Cominco Metals, Ltd.: Finding A Sustainable Solution To Transboundary Pollution, Kate Mcdonald
Georgia Law Review
Transboundary pollution has become an issue of increasing concern as scientists learn more about the global effects of industry pollutants and the harm they pose to human health. - Advances in our understanding of the environment opened the door to disputes over responsibility for prevention and mitigation of the harmful effects of pollutants and created a search for techniques for international conflict resolution. Recently, industrial pollution of the Columbia River resulted in a legal battle between Washington citizens and a Canadian corporation over who was financially responsible for restoring the health of a portion of the river lying within the …
Three Theories Of Substantive Due Process, Daniel O. Conkle
Three Theories Of Substantive Due Process, Daniel O. Conkle
Articles by Maurer Faculty
Substantive due process is in serious disarray, with the Supreme Court simultaneously embracing two, and perhaps three, competing and inconsistent theories of decisionmaking. The first two theories, historical tradition and reasoned judgment, have explicit and continuing support in the Court's decisions. Under the theory of historical tradition, substantive due process affords presumptive constitutional protection only to liberties that are "deeply rooted in this Nation's history and tradition." By contrast, the theory of reasoned judgment is far more expansive, permitting the Court to identify rights independently, through a process that amounts to philosophical analysis or political-moral reasoning. The third theory, evolving …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Workplace violence has always existed in the U.S.---indeed, during some periods of our history, fear, intimidation, and physical violence were commonplace in work settings. Contemporary expectations in industrialized democracies, however, are that all workers are entitled to a workplace free from recognized hazards. During the time period from the mid 1980s to the present, a range of actors from local, state, and Federal government, industry, labor, academic, as well as professional societies and organizations became active in the area of workplace violence. Government efforts have stopped short of regulatory efforts with an emphasis instead on symbolic and learning tools. The …

Regarding Pained Sympathy And Sympathy Pains: Morality, And Empathy In The Civil Adjudication Of Pain, Jody L. Madeira
Articles by Maurer Faculty
This Essay considers the legal propriety of the empathic responses of jurors to suffering plaintiffs. To that end, Part II first explicates the legal contours of a tension between what is experiential or physical (objective) and what is expressionistic or non-physical (subjective). This tension is a foundational jurisprudential concern in personal injury litigation because the subjective is seen to threaten the rule of law: the perceived primacy of reason and logic. Thus, this tension is also what the parties' attorneys seek to exploit and what the court seeks to constrain. Part III explores why an empathic identification is indeed a …
