Drifting And Directed: The Post-High School Plans Of Students From Three Communities In Rural Alaska, Aaron T. Doyle Dec 2006

Drifting And Directed: The Post-High School Plans Of Students From Three Communities In Rural Alaska, Aaron T. Doyle

Arctic and Northern Studies

Many students in Alaska's rural villages complete their secondary education without a direction for life after high school. Students consistently report high aspirations to vocational training, college, and careers that require postsecondary education, yet few end up realizing these plans. To understand this paradox, this thesis uses qualitative methods to examine the influences that shaped the post-high school plans of 49 rural Alaska Native students in three villages in western Alaska. This thesis finds that misgivings about the purpose of education, difficult choices about leaving home, a substandard education, a lack of information, and perceptions of failure all combined to …

Adsorption Of Cu (Ii) And Cd (Ii) By Chininous Polymers, Hong Zhang Dec 2006

Adsorption Of Cu (Ii) And Cd (Ii) By Chininous Polymers, Hong Zhang

Engineering

Heavy metal contamination has emerged as a major health problem worldwide. Biosorption, using biological waste products as sorbents, may provide a cost effective treatment strategy. The current study investigated several types of biomass, generated from waste crab shells, as bio-sorbents to remove cadmium and copper in a batch reaction system. Isotherm studies suggested that uptake increased with increasing number of amine groups, i.e. increasing degree of deacetylation (DDA) as measured by hydrogen nuclear magnetic resonance (¹H-NMR) as well as Fourier Transform Infra-red (FTIR) spectroscopy. Potentiometric titration was shown not to be a valid method in measuring the DDA for medium …

Protecting Family Drinking Water In Rural Alaska: Improved Water Management In Homes Without Running Water, Shawna R. Laderach Dec 2006

Protecting Family Drinking Water In Rural Alaska: Improved Water Management In Homes Without Running Water, Shawna R. Laderach

Engineering

The objective of this study was to investigate and make recommendations for improved in-home water management in an underserved rural Alaskan community without piped water. The main focus of the study is point-of-use disinfection. A model was developed based on experiments to predict the chlorine decay over time and the necessary chlorine dosage for waters used in the pilot community so that sufficient chlorine residual would remain during storage. TOC concentration, initial chlorination level, reduced iron and temperature were major factors impacting the chlorine consumption. Safe free chlorine levels of between 0.2 mg/L and 4.0 mg/L could be achieved in …

Winter Feeding Ecology And Biomagnification Of Organochlorine Contaminants In Alaska Polar Bears, Torsten W. Bentzen Dec 2006

Winter Feeding Ecology And Biomagnification Of Organochlorine Contaminants In Alaska Polar Bears, Torsten W. Bentzen

Biological Sciences

Dietary pathways expose polar bears to a variety of contaminant profiles and concentrations, ranging from bowhead whale (Balaena mysticetus) as one of the least contaminated marine mammals to the more highly contaminated upper trophic level ringed seal (Phoca hispida) which represent the majority of their annual diet. We used stable isotopes [delta]¹⁵N and [delta]¹³C to estimate trophic status of 139 free-ranging polar bears sampled along Alaska's Beaufort Sea coast in spring 2003 and 2004. The [delta]¹⁵N values of polar bear packed blood cells ranged from 18.2% to 21.4% with a mean of 19.5% (SD=0.7) in 2003 and 19.9% (SD=0.7) in …

New Differences Between Negligence And Strict Liability And Their Implications On Medical Malpractice Reform, Noam Sher Dec 2006

New Differences Between Negligence And Strict Liability And Their Implications On Medical Malpractice Reform, Noam Sher

ExpressO

The present article seeks to explore previously undiscussed differences between the negligence and strict liability rules and thereby examine the required medical liability reform, if such reform is indeed required. Our main thesis is that negligence as a basis for liability entails a unique mechanism, which is essentially different than the strict liability mechanism, and is more efficient for several reasons, related to the legal function of resolving partial information problems which cause partial failure in the healthcare market. Among other things, the negligence mechanism (1) motivates the parties to a potential damages claim to invest in information gathering; (2) …

Form-Based Code As A Regulatory Tool For Mixed Use Urban Infill Development In Lincoln, Nebraska, David A. Gaspers Dec 2006

Form-Based Code As A Regulatory Tool For Mixed Use Urban Infill Development In Lincoln, Nebraska, David A. Gaspers

Community and Regional Planning Program: Theses

The separation of incompatible uses by zoning has been an established land regulatory tool for the past eighty years. The Standard State Zoning Enabling Act was made available to states by the U.S. Department of Commerce in 1924 to provide state governments with standardized language with which they could pass legislation that would grant governments the authority to enact zoning ordinances to promote the health, safety and welfare of the public. The United States Supreme Court held up the legality of zoning with the landmark 1926 case of Euclid v. Ambler Realty. Since that time, zoning has been the predominant …

Indoor Air Quality: Determination Of Voc's In A Reproductive Clinic., Miriam Rachel Trivette Dec 2006

Indoor Air Quality: Determination Of Voc's In A Reproductive Clinic., Miriam Rachel Trivette

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to perform an indoor air quality (IAQ) investigation at the Center for Applied Reproductive Science (CARS) to assess whether VOCs exist at levels dangerous to embryo. Formaldehyde, n-hexane, benzene, and styrene concentrations were measured at six locations. Formaldehyde concentrations were comparable to office and residential indoor air. N-hexane, benzene, and styrene were not detected. In addition, acetaldehyde, ethanol, and isopropyl alcohol were detected. IAQ parameters (carbon dioxide, temperature, humidity, pressure, and particulates) were measured at 22 sites monthly for one year. Temperature and humidity readings were within Environmental Protection Agency recommendations. Particulate concentrations were …

A Study Of Instructional Technology Resource Teachers In Virginia's Public School Divisions: Who Are They And What Do They Do?, Kimberly M. Hooker

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this research was to examine the role of instructional technology resource teachers (ITRTs) within Virginia's public school divisions focusing on how ITRTs used their time throughout the school year to integrate technology into the curriculum. Based on data from surveys of current ITRTs, the researcher investigated further to find relationships, if any, among the professional and educational backgrounds and work calendar of these teachers and their responses to their actual role. The study also addressed training that the ITRTs have received to assist them in their job duties and explored the participants' perceptions of their roles as …

Responses Of Pond-Breeding Amphibians To Wildfire: Short-Term Patterns In Occupancy And Colonization, Blake R. Hossack, Paul Stephen Corn Dec 2006

Responses Of Pond-Breeding Amphibians To Wildfire: Short-Term Patterns In Occupancy And Colonization, Blake R. Hossack, Paul Stephen Corn

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

Wildland fires are expected to become more frequent and severe in many ecosystems, potentially posing a threat to many sensitive species. We evaluated the effects of a large, stand-replacement wildfire on three species of pond-breeding amphibians by estimating changes in occupancy of breeding sites during the three years before and after the fire burned 42 of 83 previously surveyed wetlands. Annual occupancy and colonization for each species was estimated using recently developed models that incorporate detection probabilities to provide unbiased parameter estimates. We did not find negative effects of the fire on the occupancy or colonization rates of the long-toed …
