Social Support Indicators That Influence Breastfeeding Decisions In Mothers Of North Florida Dec 2006

Social Support Indicators That Influence Breastfeeding Decisions In Mothers Of North Florida

Florida Public Health Review

To examine whether a mother’s social support system influences decision to breastfeed, pregnant women and women who had children, from six north Florida counties, were asked to participate in this study. Women were recruited from local lactation support groups and agencies serving mothers and children. Participants were administered a 34-item questionnaire that asked about motivation, social support and intention. Mothers breastfed because they believed breast milk was healthier for the baby. These mothers identified the baby’s fathers as being most supportive, but felt they needed more support from the fathers. Interestingly, most women strongly agreed that whereas the support system …

The Influence Of Age On Knowledge And Medication Usage By Persons Attending Rural North Florida Clinics Dec 2006

The Influence Of Age On Knowledge And Medication Usage By Persons Attending Rural North Florida Clinics

Florida Public Health Review

Medication therapy is an important component of the comprehensive treatment plan designed to maintain or improve health. If patients do not take prescribed medications correctly or are non-adherent, less successful therapy occurs. Reasons given for noncompliance include cost, misunderstanding the therapy, side effects, forgetfulness, or a belief that the medication is not effective or necessary. This study had two goals, the first was to evaluate medication use while simultaneously assessing knowledge, compliance, tolerance, and perceived efficacy. Drug-related problems, if any, were also identified. The second goal was to develop methods to improve patient outcomes based upon identified problems. For eight …

Characterization Of Hsp70 Binding And Nucleotide Exchange By The Yeast Hsp110 Chaperone Sse1, Lance Shaner, Rui Sousa, Kevin A Morano Dec 2006

Characterization Of Hsp70 Binding And Nucleotide Exchange By The Yeast Hsp110 Chaperone Sse1, Lance Shaner, Rui Sousa, Kevin A Morano

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

SSE1 and SSE2 encode the essential yeast members of the Hsp70-related Hsp110 molecular chaperone family. Both mammalian Hsp110 and the Sse proteins functionally interact with cognate cytosolic Hsp70s as nucleotide exchange factors. We demonstrate here that Sse1 forms high-affinity (Kd approximately 10-8 M) heterodimeric complexes with both yeast Ssa and mammalian Hsp70 chaperones and that binding of ATP to Sse1 is required for binding to Hsp70s. Sse1.Hsp70 heterodimerization confers resistance to exogenously added protease, indicative of conformational changes in Sse1 resulting in a more compact structure. The nucleotide binding domains of both Sse1/2 and the Hsp70s dictate interaction specificity and …

Caenorhabditis Briggsae Methods, Scott Everet Baird, Helen M. Chamberlin Dec 2006

Caenorhabditis Briggsae Methods, Scott Everet Baird, Helen M. Chamberlin

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Caenorhabditis briggsae is being developed in parallel to C. elegans as a model system, primarily for the study of evolution. Like C. elegans, C. briggsae is a protandrous hermaphrodite and like C. elegans, its genome has been sequenced. From this point, these two model systems diverge. The development, behavior, and physiology of C. elegans have been characterized through tens of thousands of genetic and molecular studies. Genetic and molecular characterizations of C. briggsae are relatively few. Experimental resources in C. elegans include a high density recombination map that is well integrated with the genome sequence. The C. briggsae …

Incorporation Of Capillary-Channeled Polymer (C-Cp) Fibers Into Micropipette Tips For Solid Phase Extraction With Applications In Bioanalysis, Donald Fornea

All Theses

Solid phase extraction (SPE), is a widely used sample preparation method that is currently experiencing a surge in research interest, clever architecture/format development, and stationary phase characterization.1-3 SPE devices commonly exist in syringe, cartridge, disk, and micropipette tip formats.4 Micropipette tip SPE has enhanced the determination of proteins by electrospray ionization (ESI) and matrix assisted laser desorption ionization (MALDI) mass spectrometry (MS) by handling micro-liter volumes of sample and buffer removal/solvent exchange.5-7 Buffers have deleterious effects on ionization taking place in MS sources due to preferential ionization, ion suppression effects, and the formation of adduct species competing for ionization in …

Implementation Of Middle School Best Practice In A K-8 School: A Case Study Of The Planning Year For Barnette Magnet School In Fairbanks, Alaska, Colleen Smith-Thomas Dec 2006

Implementation Of Middle School Best Practice In A K-8 School: A Case Study Of The Planning Year For Barnette Magnet School In Fairbanks, Alaska, Colleen Smith-Thomas

Education

This study used a case study design to investigate the planning year for Barnette Magnet School, which opened in the fall of 2005. The conversion to a K-8 school is met with some difficulty by school districts across the nation because, while there are many benefits to keeping these 7th and 8th grade adolescents in their neighborhood elementary school where supportive relationships have already been developed, the fact remains that they have different social, emotional and academic needs than either elementary or high school students. This case study seeks to examine the current research into best educational practice for this …

Micropulse Lidar Observations Of Aerosols Over The Atmospheric Radiation Measurement Site At Barrow, Ramaswamy A.S.R. Tiruchirapalli Dec 2006

Micropulse Lidar Observations Of Aerosols Over The Atmospheric Radiation Measurement Site At Barrow, Ramaswamy A.S.R. Tiruchirapalli

Atmospheric Sciences

Micropulse lidar (MPL) is a ground-based optical remote sensing system designed to determine the vertical structure of clouds and aerosols in the atmosphere. An MPL has operated at Barrow, Alaska since November 2002. From these data, we seek to determine the altitude of aerosol layers in the free troposphere from lidar backscatter profiles. Layer heights are then fed into the HYSPLIT (Hybrid Single-Particle Lagrangian Integrated Trajectory Model) model, a back-trajectory model developed by NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) to compute isentropic back-trajectories. The model is run interactively using the READY interface and can calculate trajectories from multiple heights within …

A Phenomenology Of Women And Aging: A Communication Perspective, Grace F. Pedersen Dec 2006

A Phenomenology Of Women And Aging: A Communication Perspective, Grace F. Pedersen

Communication

This qualitative study examines the female experience of aging in late-midlife. It involves women between 49 and 70 years of age, who characterize late-midlife years through narratives of lived experience. Their stories provide description of events that introduced or reinforced their sense of self-as-aging, and relate insights gained socially and relationally in the aging process. Conversational interviews, with participant observation of nonverbal communication, were conducted and recorded as my method of data collection, and phenomenological methodology was used in description, analysis, and interpretation of the resulting capta.

Physiological And Behavioral Responses Of Tanner Crabs (Chionoecetes Bairdi) To Handling, Emersion And Temperature, Sonya Y. El Mejjati Dec 2006

Physiological And Behavioral Responses Of Tanner Crabs (Chionoecetes Bairdi) To Handling, Emersion And Temperature, Sonya Y. El Mejjati

Marine Biology

Commercially harvested Tanner crabs (Chionoecetes bairdi) are exposed to physical stressors during capture and sorting including changes in temperature and oxygen availability. This study characterizes the physiological and behavioral responses of Tanner crabs exposed to air (emersion) at 8 and -15°C for various durations. Concentrations of glucose and lactate in hemolymph measured between 30 and 120 min following emersion for 45 min differed between animals exposed to 8 or -15°C. Glucose concentrations were higher among animals emersed at 8°C than those exposed to -15°C within the intervals sampled. Lactate concentrations were unchanged at intervals following emersion at 8°C, while they …

Interrelationship Among Temperature, Metabolism, Swimming Performance And Recovery In Pacific Cod (Gadus Macrocephalus): Implications Of A Changing Climate, Shannon K. Hanna Dec 2006

Interrelationship Among Temperature, Metabolism, Swimming Performance And Recovery In Pacific Cod (Gadus Macrocephalus): Implications Of A Changing Climate, Shannon K. Hanna

Marine Biology

Physiological constraints are suggested to contribute to the observed changes in relative abundance of Pacific cod (Gadus macrocephalus) seen in association with interdecadal changes in sea surface temperatures. To examine this concept, two experiments were conducted to determine critical swimming speed (Ucrit), rates of oxygen consumption and recovery post-exhaustion of adult cod acclimated to different temperatures. In addition, hematocrit and plasma concentrations of cortisol, metabolites and ions from resting and exhausted fish were measured to assess the impact of swim trials on fish condition. In experiment one, fish acclimated to 4°C had similar mean Ucrit (1.07 BL/s) and resting metabolic …

Enhancing Student And Graduate Employability In The Hospitality Industry: A Video Project, Thyagarajan V. Ammachathram

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Employment interviews are designed to judge the qualifications and desirability of a candidate for a job. Research shows that interviews are incredibly important in getting the right job. A study conducted by the Bureau of National Affairs pinpointed the most important factors in hiring applicants, with employment interviews being the single most important factor in getting a job (Elfner, 2006). Hospitality firms are placing greater emphasis on the ability of graduates to fit within their businesses (Pittaway & Thedham, 2005). Even though qualifications and skills are vital for selection, candidates should know how to set themselves apart from other candidates …

Community Development Quota Program: Community Sustainability And The Bering Sea, Lauren A. Krueger Dec 2006

Community Development Quota Program: Community Sustainability And The Bering Sea, Lauren A. Krueger

Arctic and Northern Studies

Sustainability and resilience are worthwhile goals for western Alaskan communities. From shifting global markets to climate change, these communities face numerous novel threats to their survival that increased resilience can mitigate. This thesis examines how an innovative community management scheme, the Community Development Quota (CDQ) Program, can contribute resilience to its communities, how those resilience-lending aspects can be better utilized, and what obstacles prevent sustainability in western Alaska. Qualitative, semi-structured interviews with ten community residents from four of the six CDQ groups were conducted and CDQ relevant documents and reports were evaluated to measure eight indicators of sustainability and resilience: …
