The Modern Age Of Informed Consent, Barbara L. Atwell Jan 2006

The Modern Age Of Informed Consent, Barbara L. Atwell

University of Richmond Law Review

This essay explores the informed consent ramifications of the confluence of these two phenomena: developments in medical technology and emerging adulthood. In particular, it explores consent to medical treatments by emerging adults that are both elective and irreversible. In such cases, policy considerations dictate that additional safeguards be implemented to ensure that the consent given is truly informed. Part II of this essay provides an overview of the informed consent doctrine and outlines a variety of advancements in elective medical technology. Part III explores the concept of emerging adulthood. Part IV suggests that when emerging adults seek medical treatments that …

Phenolic Compounds And Antioxidant Activity Of Oat Bran By Various Extraction Methods, Darryl Lourey Holliday Jan 2006

Phenolic Compounds And Antioxidant Activity Of Oat Bran By Various Extraction Methods, Darryl Lourey Holliday

LSU Master's Theses

Recent studies have suggested that the health promoting capabilities of oats are due to its antioxidants (tocopherols, tocotrienols, and sterols) found within the bran along with phenolic compounds, such as avenanthramides, p-hydroxybenoic acid and vanillic acid. Long-chain fatty acid oxidation is directly responsible for most off-flavors in food. Since oat bran is a good source of antioxidants, a concentrated extract could be used as a natural preservative, for foods rich in unsaturated long-chain fatty acids. Three methods, traditional solvent (TSE), microwave-assisted solvent (MAS), and supercritical fluid treatment (SFT), were used to obtain the extracts. One extraction temperature in TSE, 60°C, …

Internet Utilization As A Medium For Training Employees In Multi-Unit Restaurants, Dipendra Singh

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Employee turnovers costs for multi-unit restaurant companies amount to millions of dollars each year. A large amount is spent on training new employees, so that the service and product standards can be maintained throughout the outlets. However, very little attention is being paid to the Internet as an efficient and cost effective medium for training employees; The purpose of this study is to determine the relationship between multi-unit restaurant companies and their current and perceived future Internet usage for employee training. Multi-unit restaurant companies with different annual revenues were categorized and examined for the extent of Internet usage in training; …

Computational Modeling Of Proton Exchange Membrane Electrolysis Cell For Hydrogen Production, Shanthi P Katukota Jan 2006

Computational Modeling Of Proton Exchange Membrane Electrolysis Cell For Hydrogen Production, Shanthi P Katukota

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Numerical simulations of electrochemical process for hydrogen production were performed for the purpose of examining the phenomena occurring within the proton exchange membrane (PEM) water splitting cell. A steady-state isothermal two dimensional model of the cell is developed. Finite element method was used to solve the multi-component transport model coupled with flow in porous medium, charge balance and electrochemical kinetics; Parametric studies were performed based on appropriate mass balances, transport, and electrochemical kinetics applied to the cell. It is observed that, as the water on the anode side flows from the inlet to the outlet, the mass fraction of oxygen …

Post-Implant Dosimetry Analysis Of Brachytherapy Patients Using Pre And Post-Implant Mri, Deana Lee Tuttle Jan 2006

Post-Implant Dosimetry Analysis Of Brachytherapy Patients Using Pre And Post-Implant Mri, Deana Lee Tuttle

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Post-implant dosimetry analysis is a critical step in brachytherapy for identifying the quality of the implant based on seed localization in relation to the volume of the prostate. However, the accuracy of post-implant dosimetry analysis is dependent on accurate delineation of the prostate from surrounding tissue in post-implant CT images. Research has shown that adequately delineate the prostate from surrounding tissue in CT images is difficult, resulting in significant variation between the dose received by the prostate and the dose prescribed by the physician. This research compared prostate volumes delineated from pre-implant US, post-implant CT, and pre and post-implant MR …

Improved Techniques For Estimation Of Paved Road Pm(10) Emissions, Geisa Bittencourt Rodrigues

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

AP-42 Emission Factors were analyzed for trends over time and dependence on roadway classification and improvements. Local roads presented a significant decrease in Emission Factor over time for pooled data. Local road Emission Factors were significantly higher than Collector and Minor Arterial Emission Factors for pooled data. Differences in AP-42 Emission Factor between the Collectors and Minor arterials were not statistically significant; however the differences between Local and either Collector or Minor arterials were statistically significant. Individual analysis of each road show that two Locals and two Minor arterials (among 30 different sites) presented a significant decrease with time. Year …

A Decision Support Tool To Identify Countermeasures For Pedestrian Safety, Madhuri Uddaraju Jan 2006

A Decision Support Tool To Identify Countermeasures For Pedestrian Safety, Madhuri Uddaraju

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Enhancing pedestrian safety and providing a pedestrian-friendly environment are key goals for urban planning and public works organizations. The primary tasks to be accomplished in enhancing pedestrian safety include identifying high pedestrian risk locations and implementing appropriate countermeasures to minimize the risks. The selection of such countermeasures to address specific pedestrian safety concerns should be done based on factors that influence the risks. A methodology to identify suitable countermeasures for various scenarios is developed in this research. The factors considered for selection are crash contributing factors, roadway functional class, posted speed limits, type of location (intersection/non-intersection), vulnerable age groups of …

Changing Economic Incentives In Long-Term Care, R. Tamara Konetzka Jan 2006

Changing Economic Incentives In Long-Term Care, R. Tamara Konetzka

Center for Policy Research

Just as managed care has changed utilization and incentives in other parts of health care, there is a whole set of incentives built around long-term care that really matter. For example, if nursing homes have a financial incentive to hospitalize people with certain health conditions, then in the long run they are not going to develop the programs and invest in the resources to treat those people in the facility. Instead they're going to use those resources to stay in business or to provide other types of care. And while we can assume that policymakers do not create regulations that …

Retention Of African Americans In Gifted Education: Lessons Learned From Higher Education, James L. Moore, Donna Y. Ford, Delila Owens, Ted Hall, Melendez Byrd, Malik Henfield, Gilman W. Whiting

Mid-Western Educational Researcher

Predominately White institutions of higher education have focused a considerable amount of attention on the underrepresentation of African American and other ethnically diverse students in colleges and universities. To address this problem, colleges and universities have focused not just on recruitment but also on the retention of African American students in these predominately White institutions. They have recognized that efforts to address underrepresentation cannot be limited to recruitment efforts; they must also consider factors associated with retention in the underrepresentation equation. We contend that gifted education embodies many of the same attributes, challenges, and barriers that predominately White colleges and …

Was Busing The Problem?, Joseph Watras Jan 2006

Was Busing The Problem?, Joseph Watras

Mid-Western Educational Researcher

On 15 April 2002, the Dayton Board of Education, the Ohio State Department of Education, and the NAACP reached an agreement ending busing for racial balance in the city schools. Participants agreed that the era for litigated desegregation was over because busing had failed to raise academic achievement of African American children and court ordered racial balance caused white families to move to the suburbs. While this picture of racial desegregation fueled efforts to enhance the education of Dayton youth, it disguised the cause of the suburban sprawl that was endangering the region.

Multi-Context Use Of Language: Toward Effective Thinking And Planning For Curriculum, Anne D'Antonio Stinson, William Chandler, M. Virginia Epps, Melissa Frieberg

Mid-Western Educational Researcher

The flexible, multi-contextual use of language is essential to integrated learning and thinking. Likewise, learning and thinking in an integrated way is essential to multi-dimensional teaching. This study examines the ways pre-service secondary teachers define their subjects. Students enrolled in a secondary reading methods course were asked to provide multiple definitions for a predetermined list of critical vocabulary terms common to multiple disciplines. We used these definitions to measure participants’ level of sophistication with regard to the multi-context use of language. Participants’ responses illuminated implications for curriculum development in secondary schools including the need for models for pre- and in-service …
