An Investigation Of Psychosocial Functioning For Children And Adolescents Diagnosed With Bipolar Disorders, Maura Paczan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study provides a literature review of how the various sub-types of bipolar disorders are related to a child's daily functioning. Also, this study examined the age of onset of the disorder as it is related to psychosocial functioning. Specifically, age of onset was compared with psychosocial functioning in the areas of friends, family and school. Further, the interaction between age of onset, type of bipolar disorder (I, II, NOS), and psychosocial functioning was examined. The results confirmed, youth diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder evidence significant difficulty in overall psychosocial functioning. This finding was consistent across measures (i.e., CGAS and GSA …

An Examination Of The Changes In Depression, Anxiety And Quality Of Life Among Patients Who Undergo Gastric Bypass Surgery, Thomas Petrone

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study explores the changes in depression, anxiety and quality of life of patients who underwent gastric by-pass surgery. The purpose of this study was to assess the mental health status of 30 patients by comparing the pre and post-operative mental health evaluative data that had been collected at the pre-surgery evaluation and again at the two, four and six-month follow-up appointments. The data included scores from Beck Depression Inventories (BDI), Beck Anxiety Inventories (BAI) and Rand 36-Item Quality of Life Health Surveys (SF-36). Surgical intervention treatments of obesity are increasing. Evaluation of the pre-operative and post-operative psychological status of …

Engaging Vernacular Voices: Exploring Online Public Spheres Of Discourse For Everyday Citizens, Linda Schifino Jan 2006

Engaging Vernacular Voices: Exploring Online Public Spheres Of Discourse For Everyday Citizens, Linda Schifino

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This project considers the ways in which ordinary citizens engage in public discourse. This work is guided by what Michael Schudson calls the triumph of democratic sensibilities--the expectation that everybody owns public life. A politically active citizenry is, therefore, vital to a healthy democracy. Further, this inquiry assumes a rhetorical view of civic engagement, arguing that participation in a democracy is more than merely casting one's vote. Consequently, it is essential to identify and evaluate the vehicles by which individual citizens can take part in discursive civic life.

The challenge to healthy public spheres of discourse in contemporary American society …

Recreational Manual For Caregivers Of Individuals With Cerebral Palsy, Erica Bucher Jan 2006

Recreational Manual For Caregivers Of Individuals With Cerebral Palsy, Erica Bucher

Occupational Therapy Capstones

A brief literature review was conducted on cerebral palsy to gain general information and statistics. After reviewing the literature, it was noted that there is a significantly high number of children diagnosed with cerebral palsy each year. These individuals are at a high risk to experience the lack of opportunity for a wide choice of recreational activities. To understand the magnitude of the problem an extensive literature review was done on this topic. It was found that the lack of access and participation in independent recreational opportunities may lead to the development of dependent behavioral patterns, learned helplessness and depression. …

Resource Manual For Rural Occupational Therapy Practitioners, Janae Marie. Hughes

Occupational Therapy Capstones

Rural hospitals have been an integral part of the culture of rural America, where clients were once able to seek services needed in their hometowns. Now more than ever, rural facilities are facing increased challenges to remain viable and at the same time continue to deliver high quality care to their communities (American Hospital Association, 2005). With small towns becoming smaller, it is becoming increasingly difficult to recruit allied health professionals to these areas. The reasons for this vary from area to area yet there are some commonalities such as; the misperceptions of limited community activities and resources, lower pay …

A Treatment Protocol Utilizing Sensory Integrative Techniques For Treating Self-Mutilation, Nikki Stevens Jan 2006

A Treatment Protocol Utilizing Sensory Integrative Techniques For Treating Self-Mutilation, Nikki Stevens

Occupational Therapy Capstones

“It is estimated that one to two million people in the United States intentionally and repeatedly bruise, cut, burn, mark, scratch and mutilate different parts of their own bodies. This estimate represents only the adolescents and adults who actually seek help for the behavior” (Ferentz, 2002). The reasons for self-mutilation behaviors span across a considerable range from post-traumatic stress disorder to hypersensitivity. The research indicates parallels between children who have been sexually, physically, or emotionally abused and self-mulitlation. Basically, it is an unhealthy coping strategy to deal with overwhelming and intense feelings. The current treatment regime varies and includes: medication, …

Interrelationships Among Language Skills, Externalizing Behavior, And Academic Fluency And Their Impact On The Academic Skills Of Students With Ed, J. Ron Nelson, Gregory J. Benner, Stern Neill, Scott A. Stage

Marketing

There is growing interest in understanding the factors that influence the academic achievement of students with emotional disturbance (ED). Structural equation modeling was used to test the interrelationships among language skills, externalizing behavior, and academic fluency and their impact on the academic skills of students with ED. Results showed that language skills exerted a significant proximal effect and distal effect on academic skills. The effect of language skills was mediated through academic fluency (path coefficient = .389) but also had a proximal effect on academic skills (path coefficient = .359). However, externalizing behavior failed to have a statistically significant effect on …

Towards Equity And Efficiency In Partnership Allocations, Darryll K. Jones Jan 2006

Towards Equity And Efficiency In Partnership Allocations, Darryll K. Jones

Journal Publications

The primary goal of any tax system is to raise sufficient revenue for government. More precisely, taxation is the means by which government supplies necessary things not available from the private market. Taxation allows society to cure distributional imperfections in the market. It is appropriate, therefore, only to the extent that the market cannot provide goods and services for which there is public demand; if private markets equitably supplied food, shelter, health care, education, and common defense, taxes could be greatly reduced if not completely eliminated. The revenue raising goal is thwarted to the extent the taxing system is either …

Dawn Of A New Era In The Extraterritorial Application Of U.S. Environmental Statutes: A Proposal For An Integrated Judicial Standard Based On The Continuum Of Context, Randall S. Abate Jan 2006

Dawn Of A New Era In The Extraterritorial Application Of U.S. Environmental Statutes: A Proposal For An Integrated Judicial Standard Based On The Continuum Of Context, Randall S. Abate

Journal Publications

Congress has the authority to enact laws beyond the territorial boundaries of the United States. However, whether Congress intended to exercise extraterritorial authority in a given statute is a matter for the courts to ascertain through statutory interpretation. When considering the reach of federal legislation, courts are guided by a presumption against extraterritoriality. Part I of this Article discusses the origins and evolution of the presumption against extraterritoriality before and after the landmark decision in Aramco. Part II addresses the continuum of context paradigm from Massey and describes the extraterritorial application of U.S. environmental statutes. Part III of the Article …
