Department of Child, Youth, and Family Studies: Faculty Publications

Between 1998 and 1999, 43 street-level prostituted women were interviewed regarding their developmental experiences, including prostitution entry, maintenance, and exit attempts. Three years later, 18 of the original 43 participants were located and interviewed. This exploratory follow-up investigation focused on the women’s life experiences between the two points of contact, with emphasis on sex-industry exit attempts. Five women had maintained their exit efforts and had not returned to prostitution, nine had returned to both prostitution and drug use, and one had returned to prostitution only. Three additional women had violated parole and been reincarcerated. Themes evident among those who were …

Mutant Neurogenin-3 In Congenital Malabsorptive Diarrhea, Jiafang Wang, Galen Cortina, S. Vincent Wu, Robert Tran, Jang-Hyeon Cho, Ming-Jer Tsai, Travis J. Bailey, Milan Jamrich, Marvin E. Ament, William R. Treem, Ivor D. Hill, Jorge H. Vargas, George Gershman, Douglas G. Farmer, Laurie Reyen, Martin G. Martín

Biology

Background: Neurogenin-3 (NEUROG3) is expressed in endocrine progenitor cells and is required for endocrine-cell development in the pancreas and intestine. The NEUROG3 gene (NEUROG3) is therefore a candidate for the cause of a newly discovered autosomal recessive disorder characterized by generalized malabsorption and a paucity of enteroendocrine cells. Methods: We screened genomic DNA from three unrelated patients with sparse enteroendocrine cells for mutations of NEUROG3. We then tested the ability of the observed mutations to alter NEUROG3 function, using in vitro and in vivo assays. Results: The patients had few intestinal enteroendocrine cells positive for chromogranin A, but they had …

Chronic Suppurative Otitis Media With Intracranial Complication, Abdulaziz A. Aldakhail

Neurosciences

A complication of otitis media is defined as a spread of infection beyond the pneumatized area of the temporal bone and the associated mucosa. Complications can be classified as intra temporal or intra cranial, which includes extradural abscess, brain abscess, subdural abscess, sigmoid sinus thrombophlebitis, otic hydrocephalus, and meningitis. Since the introduction of antibiotics, intra cranial complications in otitis media are less common, however, the occurrence should not be underestimated due to their associated morbidity and mortality. Herein, we report a case of chronic suppurative otitis media (CSOM) with intra cranial complication (brain abscess) in a 25-year-old male patient with …

Large Primary Cerebral Hydatid Cysts In Children, Mehmet Tatli, Aslan Guzel, Nur Altinors

Neurosciences

Hydatid cyst disease in childhood is still a serious health problem in the rural areas of Turkey and other places where the parasite is endemic. The brain involvement rate varies from 1-2% in hydatid disease. Especially in children, hydatid cysts can grow to enormous sizes, and the cases can remain neurologically intact. In this report, a 7-year-old boy, a 15-year-old girl, and a 10-year-old girl, in whom large primary brain hydatid cysts were diagnosed radiologically and treated surgically, are presented. Severe headache in childhood should be taken into consideration carefully in countries where hydatid disease is seen.

Catholics, Curses, And Cousins In A Cracker Box, Kathryn Wallace Iffrig Jan 2006

Catholics, Curses, And Cousins In A Cracker Box, Kathryn Wallace Iffrig

Theses

In a small sitting room of a mortuary in a rural Missouri town, the author considers the life of her recently departed cousin. Having shared a family home early in their childhood, and despite similar upbringing, their lives had ultimately diverged, with him choosing a path that many would consider self-destructive and bound to lead to an early death.

Contemplating the circumstances of her cousin's death, the author falls into ruminations on their childhood, family, and common experiences they shared during those early years. Considering the disparate paths their lives ultimately took, the author questions the influence of nature versus …
