Child Sexual Abuse: How Young People Tell, Rosaleen Mcelvaney Nov 2006

Child Sexual Abuse: How Young People Tell, Rosaleen Mcelvaney

Conference papers

This paper explores the theme of disclosing sexual abuse experiences in adolescence. As children develop increasing autonomy and independence they also develop cognitive, social and emotional skills which facilitate the process of disclosing personal experiences they have struggled for in some cases many years to maintain secrecy. Decision making skills which enable the young person to consider alternative consequences to their behaviour, multiple outcomes and an appreciation of the diverse perspectives of others enables them to weigh up the relative advantages and disadvantages of disclosure. Increased empathy enables them to appreciate the vulnerability of other children to abuse yet also …

Green Markets, Eco-Certification, And Equilibrium Fraud, Stephen F. Hamilton, David Zilberman Nov 2006

Green Markets, Eco-Certification, And Equilibrium Fraud, Stephen F. Hamilton, David Zilberman

Economics

Consumers voluntarily pay significant price premiums to acquire unobservable environmental attributes in green markets. This paper considers the performance of eco-certification policy under circumstances where consumers cannot discern environmental attributes in goods, but are able to form rational expectations regarding the extent of illicit activities in the green market. The main results are: (i) fraud is less prevalent in green markets when entry barriers limit the number of firms; (ii) conventional environmental policies on polluting techniques increase the incidence of fraud, and can even preclude the use of non-polluting techniques which would otherwise emerge in green markets; (iii) voluntary eco-certification …

Cèsar Chàvez's Rhetorical Use Of Religious Symbols, Joseph Zompetti Nov 2006

Cèsar Chàvez's Rhetorical Use Of Religious Symbols, Joseph Zompetti

Faculty Publications - Communications

Cèsar Chàvez's has been studied and praised as one of the twentieth century's greatest orators. One of his strengths as a rhetor, however, has consistently been overlooked—his use of religious themes and images to identify and reach-out to his audience. This paper analyzes several speeches by Chavez to understand how he used religious themes and images. We find that the religious elements in Chàvez's rhetoric signify the use of particular strategies as well as how he embodied religious themes and principles in his everyday life

Cluster Munitions And Erw In Lebanon, Daniele Ressler, Elizabeth Wise Nov 2006

Cluster Munitions And Erw In Lebanon, Daniele Ressler, Elizabeth Wise

The Journal of Conventional Weapons Destruction

The recent 34-day conflict between the Lebanese armed faction Hezbollah and Israel from July 12 to August 14, 2006, saw extensive use of surface-launched munitions and air-dropped munitions (to a lesser degree), resulting in wartime casualties for military and civilian actors in both Lebanon and Israel. Since the ceasefire agreement, international post-conflict attention has become focused on Lebanon due to the large number of explosive remnants of war left behind after the conflict. In particular, cluster munitions are proving problematic for post-conflict reconstruction activities in Lebanon due to their apparent high failure rate and the potential threat they pose to …

Mine Victims Needs Assessment And Assistance Coordination, Aziz Aliyev, Rauf Mamedov, Umud Mirzoyev, Siyab Mamedov

The Journal of Conventional Weapons Destruction

A UNICEF feasibility study conducted in early 2001 showed that medical and surgical facilities in Azerbaijan are adequate to meet the immediate needs of mine survivors. In general, physical rehabilitation facilities are also considered suitable; however, the lack of psycho-social support to assist mine survivors with a disability is of particular concern. The study concluded that an integrated and comprehensive assistance program could not be established for the mine victims of Azerbaijan until a needs assessment was completed. In response, Azerbaijan planned and conducted a national survey to assess mine victims’ needs, including prosthetic, social and economic needs, as a …

The Relative Importance Of Earnings And Book Value In Regulated And Deregulated Markets: The Case Of The Airline Industry, Samir M. El-Gazzar, Philip M. Finn, Charles Tang Nov 2006

The Relative Importance Of Earnings And Book Value In Regulated And Deregulated Markets: The Case Of The Airline Industry, Samir M. El-Gazzar, Philip M. Finn, Charles Tang

Faculty Working Papers and Articles

This paper examines the valuation effects of earnings and book values on security prices of the airline companies under two different market structures: the regulated and the deregulated periods. In regulated markets, and under the cost recovery plus adequate rate of return on assets, security prices are highly aligned with book values of the respective companies. In the airline industry, regulation took the form of guaranteed routes and of subsidies to service rural areas. In addition, many airlines provide international service which was not subject to US regulations. These features give rise to the differential effect of both book values …

Working Memory, Executive Functioning, And Children's Mathematics, R. Bull, K. A. Espy Nov 2006

Working Memory, Executive Functioning, And Children's Mathematics, R. Bull, K. A. Espy

Developmental Cognitive Neuroscience Laboratory: Faculty Publications

Approximately 3-6% of school-age children are estimated to have mathematics difficulties (Badian, 1983; Gross-Tsur, Manor, & Shalev, 1996; Kosc, 1974, Lewis, Hitch, & Walker, 1994). There are many more children in regular school classrooms who struggle with mathematics but whose performance is not considered sufficiently poor to be classified as meriting a specific disability in mathematics. Specific mathematic learning disability (MLD) is defined in psychiatric and educational venues as a large discrepancy between mathematics ability compared to reading and general intellectual ability, although the size of the discrepancy required varies. To further complicate matters, mathematic difficulties are associated with other …

Measuring The Development Of Executive Control With The Shape School, K. A. Espy, R. B. Bull, J Martin, W. Stroup Nov 2006

Measuring The Development Of Executive Control With The Shape School, K. A. Espy, R. B. Bull, J Martin, W. Stroup

Developmental Cognitive Neuroscience Laboratory: Faculty Publications

Although several neurodevelopmental and psychiatric disorders can emerge during the preschool period, there are comparatively few instruments to assess executive control. Evidence for validity of the Shape School (K. A. Espy, 1997) was examined in a sample of 219 typically developing young children. There was good evidence for validity, as Shape School performance variables were interrelated and were associated to other criterion measures considered to measure aspects of executive control. Also suggesting validity, the Shape School variables varied as a function of whether the task demands (a) were executive, (b) required inhibition of a prepotent response or context-controlled selection among …

In recent years The Anchor moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. The Anchor is now published in print twice per academic semester. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.

A New Vision For New Orleans And The Mississippi Delta: Applying Ecological Economics And Ecological Engineering, Robert Costanza, John W. Day, William J. Mitsch Nov 2006

A New Vision For New Orleans And The Mississippi Delta: Applying Ecological Economics And Ecological Engineering, Robert Costanza, John W. Day, William J. Mitsch

Institute for Sustainable Solutions Publications and Presentations

The restoration of New Orleans and the rest of the Mississippi delta after Hurricane Katrina can become another disaster waiting to happen, or it can become a model of sustainable development. Sea level is rising, precipitation patterns are changing, hurricane intensity is increasing, energy costs are predicted to soar, and the city is continuing to sink. Most of New Orleans is currently from 0.6 to 5 m (2?15 feet) below sea level. The conventional approach of simply rebuilding the levees and the city behind them will only delay the inevitable. If New Orleans, and the delta in which it is …

School District Enrollment Forecast Reports

The area served by the Three Rivers School District (TRSD) has experienced population and housing growth in recent years, but the District’s K-12 school enrollment in 2006-07 is 17 percent lower than its 1995-96 peak. Total K-12 enrollment has fallen in each of the past 11 years and is now lower than in any of the past 30 years. Losses have been greatest in the elementary grades (K-5), which enroll 27 percent fewer students than in 1996-97. The middle grades (6-8) have lost 20 percent in enrollment during the same period, while the high school grades (9-12) have lost only …

(Whatever Happened To) The Ada's Record Of Disability Prong(?), Alex B. Long Nov 2006

(Whatever Happened To) The Ada's Record Of Disability Prong(?), Alex B. Long

Scholarly Works

The ADA's record of disability prong is the prong least likely to be used by ADA plaintiffs in claiming protection under the Act. Between the years 2000 and 2004, ADA and Rehabilitation Act plaintiffs in federal court who alleged employment discrimination relied upon the record of disability prong less than one-third as often as the actual and perceived disability prongs in claiming disability status. Nor have ADA plaintiffs enjoyed any greater success when asserting coverage under the record of disability prong during that time period. Congress, the Equal Opportunity Commission (EEOC), and the federal courts bear much of the blame …

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Hepatitis C virus (HCV) contains two membrane-associated envelope glycoproteins, E1 and E2, which assemble as a heterodimer in the endoplasmic reticulum (ER). In this study, predictive algorithms and genetic analyses of deletion mutants and glycosylation site variants of the E1 glycoprotein were used to suggest that the glycoprotein can adopt two topologies in the ER membrane: the conventional type I membrane topology and a polytopic topology in which the protein spans the ER membrane twice with an intervening cytoplasmic loop (amino acid residues 288 to 360). We also demonstrate that the E1 glycoprotein is able to associate with the HCV …
