Mefloquine Is Highly Efficacious Against Chloroquine-Resistant Plasmodium Vivax Malaria And Plasmodium Falciparum Malaria In Papua, Indonesia, Jason D. Maguire, Krisin, Hariyani Marwoto, Thomas L. Richie, David J. Fryauff, J. Kevin Baird

United States Navy: Publications

Background. During the period of 1996–1999, we prospectively monitored 243 Javanese adults and children after arriving in Papua, Indonesia, and microscopically documented each new case of malaria by active surveillance.

Methods. In a randomized, open-label, comparative malaria treatment trial, 72 adults and 50 children received chloroquine for each incident case of malaria, and 74 adults and 47 children received mefloquine.

Results. Among 975 primary treatment courses, the cumulative 28-day curative efficacies were 26% and 82% for chloroquine against Plasmodium falciparum malaria and Plasmodium vivax malaria, respectively. Mefloquine cure rates were far superior (96% against P. falciparum malaria and 99.6% against …

United States Navy: Publications

Background: Chloroquine (CQ) or sulfadoxine-pyrimethamine (SP) monotherapy for Plasmodium falciparum often leads to therapeutic failure in Indonesia. Combining CQ with other drugs, like SP, may provide an affordable, available and effective option where artemisinin-combined therapies (ACT) are not licensed or are unavailable.

Methods: This study compared CQ (n = 29 subjects) versus CQ + SP (with or without primaquine; n = 88) for clinical and parasitological cure of uncomplicated falciparum malaria in the Menoreh Hills region of southern Central Java, Indonesia. Gametocyte clearance rates were measured with (n = 56 subjects) and without (n = 61) a single 45 mg …

Distribution Of Boreal Toad Populations In Relation To Estimated Uv-B Dose In Glacier National Park, Montana, Usa, Blake R. Hossack, Stephen A. Diamond, Paul Stephen Corn Jan 2006

Distribution Of Boreal Toad Populations In Relation To Estimated Uv-B Dose In Glacier National Park, Montana, Usa, Blake R. Hossack, Stephen A. Diamond, Paul Stephen Corn

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

A recent increase in ultraviolet B radiation is one hypothesis advanced to explain suspected or documented declines of the boreal toad (Bufo boreas Baird and Girard, 1852) across much of the western USA, where some experiments have shown ambient UV-B can reduce embryo survival. We examined B. boreas occupancy relative to daily UV-B dose at 172 potential breeding sites in Glacier National Park, Montana, to assess whether UV-B limits the distribution of toads. Dose estimates were based on ground-level UV-B data and the effects of elevation, local topographic and vegetative features, and attenuation in the water column. We also …

Simulation Of Solute Movement Through Wellbores To Characterize Public Supply Well Contaminant Vulnerability In The High Plains Aquifer, York, Nebraska, Brian R. Clark, Matthew K. Landon, Leon J. Kauffman, George Z. Hornberger Jan 2006

Simulation Of Solute Movement Through Wellbores To Characterize Public Supply Well Contaminant Vulnerability In The High Plains Aquifer, York, Nebraska, Brian R. Clark, Matthew K. Landon, Leon J. Kauffman, George Z. Hornberger

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

A ground-water flow and transport model simulating contaminant movement to public supply wells in the High Plains aquifer near York, Nebraska was developed as part of the U.S. Geological Survey National Water-Quality Assessment Program. Water-quality samples were collected from wells screened in unconfined and confined units. Samples collected from a public supply well and selected monitoring wells completed in the confined aquifer have chemistry and age-tracer concentrations consistent with a mix of young water from unconfined recharge areas combined with relatively older confined aquifer water. These results imply that there are preferential flow paths that permit shallow recharge water and …

Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences

The genus Coccolithovirus is a recently discovered group of viruses that infect the globally important marine calcifying microalga Emiliania huxleyi. Surprisingly, the viral genome contains a cluster of putative sphingolipid biosynthetic genes not found in other viral genus. To address the role of these genes in viral pathogenesis, the ehv050 gene predicted to encode a serine palmitoyltransferase (SPT), the first and rate-limiting enzyme of sphingolipid biosynthesis, was expressed and characterized in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. We show that the encoded protein is indeed a fully functional, endoplasmic reticulum-localized, single-chain SPT. In eukaryotes SPT is a heterodimer comprised of long chain …

Members Of The Arabidopsis Fae1-Like 3-Ketoacyl-Coa Synthase Gene Family Substitute For The Elop Proteins Of Saccharomyces Cerevisiae, Shilpi Paul, Kenneth Gable, Frédéric Beaudoin, Edgar Cahoon, Jan Jaworski, Johnathan A. Napier, Teresa M. Dunn Jan 2006

Members Of The Arabidopsis Fae1-Like 3-Ketoacyl-Coa Synthase Gene Family Substitute For The Elop Proteins Of Saccharomyces Cerevisiae, Shilpi Paul, Kenneth Gable, Frédéric Beaudoin, Edgar Cahoon, Jan Jaworski, Johnathan A. Napier, Teresa M. Dunn

Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences

Several 3-keto-synthases have been studied, including the soluble fatty acid synthases, those involved in polyketide synthesis, and the FAE1-like 3-ketoacyl-CoA synthases. All of these condensing enzymes have a common ancestor and an enzymatic mechanism that involves a catalytic triad consisting of Cys, His, and His/Asn. In contrast to the FAE1-like family of enzymes that mediate plant microsomal fatty acid elongation, the condensation step of elongation in animals and in fungi appears to be mediated by the Elop homologs. Curiously these proteins bear no resemblance to the well characterized 3-keto-synthases. There are three ELO genes in yeast that encode the homologous …

A Report On The Potential Use Of Usda Forest Service Forest Inventory And Analysis Data By The Bureau Of Land Management, Bill Williams, Tracey Frescino, Larry Deblander, Sharon Woudenberg, Michael J. Wilson Jan 2006

A Report On The Potential Use Of Usda Forest Service Forest Inventory And Analysis Data By The Bureau Of Land Management, Bill Williams, Tracey Frescino, Larry Deblander, Sharon Woudenberg, Michael J. Wilson

United States Bureau of Land Management: Staff Publications

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) does not have a consistent internal program or source of vegetation data to use for strategic level planning, such as in resource management plans. This technical note discusses and evaluates the potential of the USDA Forest Service Forest Inventory and Analysis (FIA) Program to assist the BLM in filling this data gap. The FIA program is the Forest Service’s national program for collecting and reporting information on status and trends in forested ecosystems. The FIA is considered here because it is the only standard, nationwide, systematic assessment of forest land available. The technical note …

The Case Against Evening-Up Litters Until Weaning, Duane Reese, Barbara Straw Jan 2006

The Case Against Evening-Up Litters Until Weaning, Duane Reese, Barbara Straw

Nebraska Swine Reports

A literature review on the effect of fostering or moving individual piglets from one litter to another after they are 24 to 48 hours of age was conducted. Late fostering disrupts nursing, increases fighting, and impairs the growth rate of adopted piglets and their littermates. Pig body weight at weaning was reduced 13 to 24% in extensively fostered litters vs. those where no piglets were fostered after 48 hours of age. No evidence was found that late fostering improves preweaning survival. For the greater good of all piglets, producers are encouraged to resist the urge to even-up litters or foster …

Producers’ Decisions, Allen Prosch Jan 2006

Producers’ Decisions, Allen Prosch

Nebraska Swine Reports

The business decisions pork producers make are extremely important. Decisions increase in importance at the same time they become harder to make. In business management studies, time has been devoted to learn how such decisions can be made. Less study has been expended on how producers currently make decisions. In the United States, family producers have traditionally made decisions with information they could gather independently. The ability to create decision making information is difficult. Producers need to remember the key success item — that of effective management led by sound decisions. The process of decision making involves skills and abilities …

Patterns Of Drinking Water Use In Pork Production Facilities, Mike Brumm Jan 2006

Patterns Of Drinking Water Use In Pork Production Facilities, Mike Brumm

Nebraska Swine Reports

The amount of drinking water needed daily by the pig depends on numerous influences, including temperature, diet, stage of production and health. Within a 24-hour period under thermal-neutral conditions, grow-finish and gestating swine demonstrate a peak in water usage in late afternoon while lactating females consume water more consistently throughout the day. In times of heat stress, grow-finish pigs alter their water usage pattern with a peak between 8 to 9 a.m. and second peak around 5 to 8 p.m. Daily drinking water needs for pigs range from less than 0.5 gal/pig/day for newly weaned pigs to greater than 1.5 …

Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications

The soybean cyst nematode Heterodera glycines (SCN) is of major economic importance and widely distributed throughout soybean production regions of the United States where different maturity groups with the same sources of SCN resistance are grown. The objective of this study was to assess SCN-resistant and -susceptible soybean yield responses in infested soils across the northcentral region. In 1994 and 1995, eight SCN-resistant and eight SCN-susceptible public soybean cultivars representing maturity groups (MG) I to IV were planted in 63 fields, either infested or noninfested, in 10 states in the north-central United States. Soil samples were taken to determine initial …

Biology And Biological Control Of Leafy Surface, Rob Bourchier, Rich Hansen, Rodney Lym, Andrew Norton, Denise Olsen, Carol Bell Randall, Mark Schwarzlander, Luke Skinner

United States Department of Agriculture, Forest Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Leafy spurge (Euphorbia esula L.) is an exotic, deep-rooted, perennial weed native to Europe and Asia. It was first reported in the United States in Newbury, Massachusetts, in 1827, where it likely established from contaminated soil left from ship ballasts. This invasive weed quickly spread westward across North America, accelerated by multiple reintroductions from contaminated crop seed including oat (Avena fatua L.), smooth brome (Bromus inermis Leyss.) and alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) brought by European settlers. Leafy spurge is now abundant on the northern Great Plains of the United States and the prairie provinces of Canada, …

Speciation And Quantitative Mapping Of Metal Species In Microbial Biofilms Using Scanning Transmission X-Ray Microscopy, James J. Dynes, Tolek Tyliszczak, Tohru Araki, John R. Lawrence, George D. W. Swerhone, Gary G. Leppard, Adam P. Hitchcock Jan 2006

Speciation And Quantitative Mapping Of Metal Species In Microbial Biofilms Using Scanning Transmission X-Ray Microscopy, James J. Dynes, Tolek Tyliszczak, Tohru Araki, John R. Lawrence, George D. W. Swerhone, Gary G. Leppard, Adam P. Hitchcock

United States Department of Energy: Publications

A scanning transmission X-ray microscope illuminated with synchrotron light was used to investigate the speciation and spatial distributions of metals in a microbial biofilm cultivated from river water. Metal 2p absorption edge signals were used to provide metal speciation (through shapes of the absorption spectra) and quantitative spatial distributions of the metal species. This paper presents sample data and describes methods for extracting quantitative maps of metal species from image sequences recorded in the region of the metal 2p edges. Comparisons were made with biochemical characterization of the same region using images recorded at the C 1s and O 1s …

Research Needs In Water Resources And Environment: A Panel Discussion, Otto J. Helweg, Joseph Orlins, Dale Bucks, Regan Murray, David Trueman, Raymond Walton

United States Environmental Protection Agency: Publications

Practicing engineers sometimes criticize researchers for answering questions that no one is asking, or at least for conducting research on questions of personal interest or in areas that funding agencies think are important. Although such research has a place in the overall picture of things, it is instructive to consider the practical issues that engineers in the field face. The fields of water resources and environment are very broad, and only a small number of research users could be included on the panel seated by the Education and Research Council at the 2004 World Water and Environmental Resources Congress. One …
