Coercion In California: Eugenics Reconstituted In Welfare Reform, The Contracting Of Reproductive Capcity, And Terms Of Probation, Janet Simmonds Jan 2006

Coercion In California: Eugenics Reconstituted In Welfare Reform, The Contracting Of Reproductive Capcity, And Terms Of Probation, Janet Simmonds

UC Law SF Journal on Gender and Justice

In an era where courts are expanding the scope of a constitutionally protected right to privacy, it is hard to imagine that the exercise of that right is being legally perverted to promote eugenic ideals. This, however, is precisely what has been happening in the state of California. This Note explores how modern day policies and practices, such as the family cap component of welfare policy, the sale of the reproductive capacity of drug addicts, and prohibitions on procreation as a term of probation, are used to coerce women with regard to their reproductive decisions

Boundaries Around Common Ground: Strategies In Supervision Of International Doctoral Candidates, Andrew M. Guilfoyle Jan 2006

Boundaries Around Common Ground: Strategies In Supervision Of International Doctoral Candidates, Andrew M. Guilfoyle

EDU-COM International Conference

Within critical fiscal and social gains of diversity in hosting International Doctoral (ID) Candidates, it is important to explore boundaries around the successful outcomes related to these cohorts. Interestingly, despite this significant field, little systematic research has been published on the teaching practices of supervisors in the ID context. Set with transition research, the paper identifies the central role of supervisory practices in bounding effective transition of ID candidates. Based on data from several sources including an extensive review of literature, qualitative interviews with International Doctorates (n= 26) and a series of supervisors‘ workshops; key strategies for establishing ‗common ground‘ …

Forging Partnerships In Health Care: Process And Measuring Benefits, Cobie Rudd Jan 2006

Forging Partnerships In Health Care: Process And Measuring Benefits, Cobie Rudd

EDU-COM International Conference

Universally, there is concern that much academic learning has dealt mainly in theory, removing knowledge from context with a resultant lack of practical experience. Here, the catalyst for strengthening university-community engagement, emanated from a desire to foster greater propensity within students to make connections between their academic courses and responsibility toward the community and people in need, and thus develop enhanced skills in social interaction, teamwork and effectiveness. This paper explores a variety of models of university-community engagement that aim to achieve and model good practice in policy making and planning around healthcare education and service development. Ways of integrating …

Palazzolo, The Public Trust, And The Property Owner's Reasonable Expectations: Takings And The South Carolina Marsh Island Bridge Debate, Erin Ryan Jan 2006

Palazzolo, The Public Trust, And The Property Owner's Reasonable Expectations: Takings And The South Carolina Marsh Island Bridge Debate, Erin Ryan

Scholarly Publications

South Carolina recently promulgated new guidelines regulating the State's consideration of requests by private marsh island owners to build bridges for vehicular access through publicly owned marsh and tidelands. Many thousands of these islands hug the South Carolina coast, but they are surrounded by tidelands subject to South Carolina’s formidable public trust doctrine, which obligates the State to manage submerged lands and waterways for the benefit of the public. This piece evaluates the relationship between the public trust doctrine and the takings subtext to the debate over the new guidelines – a relationship that has become particularly interesting in the …

Simplified Data Analytics For The Accurate Evaluation Of A New Venture’S Market Potential, Michael D. Mattei, Stephen Hellebusch Jan 2006

Simplified Data Analytics For The Accurate Evaluation Of A New Venture’S Market Potential, Michael D. Mattei, Stephen Hellebusch

New England Journal of Entrepreneurship

This article examines the creation of an accurate market projection designed with easy-to-use, cost-effective data analytic techniques. Many of the techniques explored are derived from the subdisciplines of decision support and data warehousing found in the information technology arena. Two significant contributions are presented: a simple mathematical technique that eliminates the need for heuristics, and the simplification of the process to the point where no computer or sophisticated statistical analysis is needed.

Entrepreneurial Financing—Alternatives For Raising Capital, Paul Broude, Joseph E. Levangie Jan 2006

Entrepreneurial Financing—Alternatives For Raising Capital, Paul Broude, Joseph E. Levangie

New England Journal of Entrepreneurship

Most entrepreneurs are continually concerned about their finances. Their companies perhaps not yet profitable, they may have a fear of “running out of dry powder.” These entrepreneurs often have fallen in love with their company’s technologies, products, and potential markets, but they require more resources. Invariably these emerging ventures shroud their fear of the grueling capital raising marathon by presenting voluminous business plans to potential investors. They often flaunt their “optimized business models.” Investors, however, typically want to know why the potential investment is such a good deal. The entrepreneur often wants guidance regarding what to say to whom in …

The Effects Of Eating Disorders On Student Academic Achievement And The School Counselor’S Role, Dana Livingston, Lori Sammons Jan 2006

The Effects Of Eating Disorders On Student Academic Achievement And The School Counselor’S Role, Dana Livingston, Lori Sammons

Perspectives In Learning

Eating Disorders have become an increasing reality among today’s youth. According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, “approximately one out of every 100 adolescent girls develops anorexia.. .another two to five out of every 100 young women develop bulimia nervosa” (Understanding Disordered Eating and Eating Disorders, 2005, p. 6). Although eating disorders are usually seen as affecting girls, studies have shown that hundreds of thousands of boys experience eating disorders as well (Boys and Eating Disorders, 2004). Factors that make anorexia and bulimia painful, such as intense fear of weight gain and lack of self-esteem, cannot be …

Conflict, Learning, And Frustration: A Dynamic Model Of Conflict Over Time, Matthew A. Cronin, Katerina Bezrukova Jan 2006

Conflict, Learning, And Frustration: A Dynamic Model Of Conflict Over Time, Matthew A. Cronin, Katerina Bezrukova

Psychology

A continuing question in the study of conflict and conflict management is, "When is conflict helpful, and when is it harmful?" Though many have offered explanations for this (Jehn, Northcraft, & Neale, 1999), data in support of these notions have been less forthcoming, especially in relation to the helpfulness of conflict (De Dreu & Weingart, 2003). In this paper we 2 present a dynamic model of conflict that we hope will both explain and clarify the confusion by conceptualizing conflict as simultaneously containing helpful (learning related) and harmful (negative sentiment related) components. We argue how both learning and negative emotion …

The Impact Of Sleep Quality And Duration On College Student Adjustment And Health, Robert L. Krenek Jr. Jan 2006

The Impact Of Sleep Quality And Duration On College Student Adjustment And Health, Robert L. Krenek Jr.

Doctoral Dissertations

College years are a time of change and transition that involves complex challenges in academic, social, personal/emotional, and institutional adjustment. Stress, anxiety, and tension are often associated with college transition and adjustment; stress and worry have been related to poor sleep quality. Studies have found that college students have more sleep problems than the general public. Research has shown that poor sleep has adverse effects on cognition, mood, and other physiological and psychological aspects of human functioning. Recent research has indicated that sleep quality may be more important than amount of sleep. Relationships have been found between sleep problems and …
