Acculturation Status And Heavy Alcohol Use Among Mexican American College Students: Investigating The Moderating Role Of Gender, Byron L. Zamboanga, Marcela Raffaelli, Nicholas J. Horton

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

We examined whether gender moderates the association between acculturation and heavy alcohol use. The sample consisted of 126 Mexican American college students (Mean age = 24.7 years; 57% female) who completed self-report measures of heavy alcohol use, acculturation status (global acculturation and ethnic identity), and relevant control variables (age, peer alcohol use). Multivariable regression revealed that higher levels of ethnic identity were associated with greater frequency of heavy alcohol among men. Conversely, neither measure of acculturation was associated with heavy alcohol use among women. These findings suggest that interventions for Latino/a students should consider the role of culturally relevant variables …

Department of Orthopaedic Surgery Faculty Papers

Abstract Background Context Despite technological advances in spine surgery, classification of sub-axial cervical spine injuries remains largely descriptive, lacking standardization and any relationship to prognosis or clinical decision making. Purpose The primary purpose of this paper is to define a classification system for sub-axial cervical spine trauma that conveys information about injury pattern and severity as well as treatment considerations and prognosis. The proposed system is designed to be both comprehensive and easy to use. The secondary objective is to evaluate the classification system in the basic principles of classification construction, namely reliability and validity. Study Design/Setting Derivation of the …

Proving Ground, Alison Secrest

Theses

This thesis seeks to explain and explore the work in Proving Ground, the thesis exhibition that accompanies this written thesis. The exhibition consists of an installation titled Proving Ground, a series of photographs titled All New Materials, and a series of small sculpture titled New Evolutions.

The installation Proving Ground is a set of life size animals; a cow, deer, and two smaller creatures that reference Romulus and Remus. The cow and the deer are made out of paper mache and discarded stuffed animals. Romulus and Remus are made out of paper mache and horse hair. …

Penalized Likelihood And Bayesian Methods For Sparse Contingency Tables: An Analysis Of Alternative Splicing In Full-Length Cdna Libraries, Corinne Dahinden, Giovanni Parmigiani, Mark C. Emerick, Peter Buhlmann Nov 2006

Penalized Likelihood And Bayesian Methods For Sparse Contingency Tables: An Analysis Of Alternative Splicing In Full-Length Cdna Libraries, Corinne Dahinden, Giovanni Parmigiani, Mark C. Emerick, Peter Buhlmann

Johns Hopkins University, Dept. of Biostatistics Working Papers

We develop methods to perform model selection and parameter estimation in loglinear models for the analysis of sparse contingency tables to study the interaction of two or more factors. Typically, datasets arising from so-called full-length cDNA libraries, in the context of alternatively spliced genes, lead to such sparse contingency tables. Maximum Likelihood estimation of log-linear model coefficients fails to work because of zero cell entries. Therefore new methods are required to estimate the coefficients and to perform model selection. Our suggestions include computationally efficient penalization (Lasso-type) approaches as well as Bayesian methods using MCMC. We compare these procedures in a …

Multiple Testing With An Empirical Alternative Hypothesis, James E. Signorovitch Nov 2006

Multiple Testing With An Empirical Alternative Hypothesis, James E. Signorovitch

Harvard University Biostatistics Working Paper Series

An optimal multiple testing procedure is identified for linear hypotheses under the general linear model, maximizing the expected number of false null hypotheses rejected at any significance level. The optimal procedure depends on the unknown data-generating distribution, but can be consistently estimated. Drawing information together across many hypotheses, the estimated optimal procedure provides an empirical alternative hypothesis by adapting to underlying patterns of departure from the null. Proposed multiple testing procedures based on the empirical alternative are evaluated through simulations and an application to gene expression microarray data. Compared to a standard multiple testing procedure, it is not unusual for …

Development Of A Gis-Based, Real-Time Internet Mapping Tool For Rabies Surveillance, Jesse D. Blanton, Arie Manangan, Jamie Manangan, Cathleen A. Hanlon, Dennis Slate, Charles E. Rupprecht

Zoonotics and Wildlife Disease: Publications

Background: Oral rabies vaccination programs have been implemented to control the spread of wildlife rabies in the United States. However, current surveillance systems are inadequate for the efficient management and evaluation of these large scale vaccine baiting programs. With this in mind, a GIS-based rabies surveillance database and Internet mapping application was created. This surveillance system, RabID, provides a new resource for the rapid mapping and dissemination of data on animal rabies cases in relation to unaffected, enzootic, and baited areas where current interventions are underway.

Results: RabID is a centralized database for diagnostic and demographic information collected by local, …
