Solvent Targeting, Avoidance And Recovery Trials (Start), Kealan Allen Jan 2006

Solvent Targeting, Avoidance And Recovery Trials (Start), Kealan Allen

Theses

Solvent is the largest-volume raw material used at Janssen Pharmaceutical (Ire) Ltd. Over 2.2 million m3 were used in 2004. The top 13 solvents make up 99% of this amount. There are two main uses for solvent on site, processing and cleaning. Processing uses 55% of the total solvent used on site, cleaning uses the remainder.

Waste solvent forms the majority of the hazardous waste produced at Janssen. Three treatment options exist at present for this waste: incineration, recovery for reuse and energy recovery. All of the hazardous waste produced on site must be exported for these treatment options, …

Behind The Rhetoric: Applying A Cultural Theory Lens To Community-Campus Partnership Development, Kevin Kecskes Jan 2006

Behind The Rhetoric: Applying A Cultural Theory Lens To Community-Campus Partnership Development, Kevin Kecskes

Public Administration Faculty Publications and Presentations

The nature of engagement between American campuses and communities is contested. This article is an invitation to reconsider why community-campus partnerships often look so different and have diverse and sometimes negative outcomes. Using a cultural theory approach (Thompson, Ellis, & Wildavsky, 1990) to elucidate the four main cultural frames that inform human behavior--hierarchist, individualistic, fatalistic, and egalitarian--this treatment maps these frames onto the broad terrain of community-campus partnerships. This exploration enables service-learning and other partnership building practitioners to more clearly recognize and understand the preconceptions that influence partners' approaches. Because service-learning rhetoric is heavily biased toward egalitarian (reciprocal, mutual) relationship …

Structural And Functional Studies Of The Csk And *Src Family Protein Tyrosine Kinases, Marina Ayrapetov Jan 2006

Structural And Functional Studies Of The Csk And *Src Family Protein Tyrosine Kinases, Marina Ayrapetov

Open Access Dissertations

Signaling networks are vital to the proper functioning and survival of the cell and the organism. Src family protein tyrosine kinases (SFKs) are involved in a variety of signal transduction events. Activation and over-expression of SFKs lead to development of a variety of human carcinomas. Regulatory mechanisms of Src family members in the cell are not fully understood. One of the known negative regulatory mechanisms for Src is phosphorylation of the C-terminal tyrosine residue by of the Csk family kinases. The Csk family has two members: Csk and Csk homologous kinase (Chk). The presence of two homologous PTKs raises important …

Replay At Optical Communications Wavelengths Of Holographic Gratings Recorded In The Visible, Vincent Toal, Maurice Whelan, Alberto Volcan, Izabela Naydenova, Suzanne Martin Jan 2006

Replay At Optical Communications Wavelengths Of Holographic Gratings Recorded In The Visible, Vincent Toal, Maurice Whelan, Alberto Volcan, Izabela Naydenova, Suzanne Martin

Conference Papers

In this paper we report on holographic diffraction gratings recorded at visible light wavelength, which can be probed at telecommunication wavelengths. The recording material is an easily prepared, self-processing photopolymer, all of whose components are water soluble. Transmission gratings of various types, namely unslanted, slanted, totally internally reflecting and Bragg gratings were all fabricated. Diffraction efficiencies at telecommunications wavelengths compare favourably with those obtained in visible light.

Assessment Of The Impacts Of Tourism Development In Coastal Communities In Belize, Amy Diedrich Jan 2006

Assessment Of The Impacts Of Tourism Development In Coastal Communities In Belize, Amy Diedrich

Open Access Dissertations

The purpose of this study is to assess the environmental, socio-cultural, and economic impacts of tourism in coastal communities in Belize. In particular, the objective is to improve our understanding of how to promote tourism that provides maximum benefits to local people and the marine environment, while having minimal negative impacts upon them. A multi-method ethnographic approach was used to gather extensive qualitative and quantitative data from six coastal communities in Belize during the period of March--November 2005. The majority of the data were collected using survey instruments for local people and tourists. These data were analyzed statistically and substantiated …

Multivariate Analysis In Vibration Modal Parameter Identification, Wenliang Zhou Jan 2006

Multivariate Analysis In Vibration Modal Parameter Identification, Wenliang Zhou

Open Access Dissertations

This dissertation proposes a novel time domain method for vibration modal parameter extraction which is based on multivariate analysis. Compared with conventional time domain modal analysis methods, this method exploits statistical independence of vibration modes and aims to separate independent oscillations from each other by using only output signals. In particular, a new multivariate analysis algorithm, Smooth Orthogonal Decomposition (SOD), and current Blind Source Separation (BSS) algorithms are employed in this analysis. The dissertation starts with presentation of classical Principal Component Analysis (PCA) or Proper Orthogonal Decomposition (POD) and their engineering applications. Then the objective, mathematical formulation and properties of …

Industrial Policy And Competition Law And Policy, Neelie Kroes Jan 2006

Industrial Policy And Competition Law And Policy, Neelie Kroes

Fordham International Law Journal

This afternoon - and it's nearly evening - I would like us to try to rethink industrial policy. I think it makes no sense to speak of industrial policy and competition policy as distinct, one from the other, let alone as antagonistic policies. I would rather define industrial policy as one which frames the structural conditions necessary to ensure economic success in a globalizing economy. I therefore have no qualms in saying that competition policy should form a central plank in any industrial policy. As a member of the European Commission, I will focus my comments on the interconnect between …

Significant Steps Or Empty Rhetoric? Current Efforts By The United States To Combat Sexual Trafficking Near Military Bases, Brian Parsons Jan 2006

Significant Steps Or Empty Rhetoric? Current Efforts By The United States To Combat Sexual Trafficking Near Military Bases, Brian Parsons

Northwestern Journal of Human Rights

The has recently voiced its strong opposition to the practice of trafficking in persons. However, personnel stationed at military bases around the globe directly contribute to the problem of human trafficking by soliciting prostitutes, creating a large demand for trafficked women. These actions undermine both the purpose of military occupation, and the stance against trafficking in persons. Current legal efforts to curb the practice of soliciting prostitutes near military bases are insufficient to effectively end the practice. A recent change to the Uniform Code of Military Justice makes soliciting a prostitute a specific chargeable offense to service-members, but this code …

Liability Externalities And The Law: A Comment On Cooter And Porat, Keith N. Hylton Jan 2006

Liability Externalities And The Law: A Comment On Cooter And Porat, Keith N. Hylton

Faculty Scholarship

Robert Cooter and Ariel Porat have offered a simple model of tort liability with sensible reform proposals. Their focus is in on damage levels, and how those levels can be modified to reflect the socially desirable level of externalization. However, to the extent that there is any gain to be achieved by modifying damage awards, it would be better to secure this gain through other approaches, such as adopting a more careful analysis of factual causation or reducing the likelihood of judicial error.

Synthesis And Spectroscopic Characterization Of Biologically Active Triarylantimony(V) Carboxylates Containing Germanium, Muhammad Kaleem Khosa, Muhammad Mazhar, Saqib Ali, Khadija Shahid, Farnaz Malik

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

A new series of bimetallic (Ge and Sb) compounds (1-7) was synthesized and characterized by elemental analyses, FT-IR, multinuclear NMR (^1H, ^{13}C) spectroscopy and mass spectrometry. These techniques not only confirmed the formation of the compounds, but also revealed their trigonal bipyramidal geometry around antimony(V). Selected compounds were screened against different pathogens and showed promising antibacterial and antifungal activities.

Does Culture Matter? : Exploring The Relationships Among Parenting A Child With Disabilities, Cultural Identification, And Stress In A Group Of European American And Immigrant Latino Families, Ximena P. Suarez-Sousa

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this correlational exploratory study was to delve into the experience of raising a child with disabilities by investigating the parents' level of stress and the role played by culture, acculturation, and various demographic variables suggested by the literature to influence stress were included. A purposive sample composed of 38 primarily undocumented immigrant Latino parents and 32 European American parents of children with disabilities was recruited from community agencies in a Midwest state. The most frequent disabilities were orthopedic impairments, pervasive developmental disorders, and mental retardation.

Data were collected with the Parent Survey, comprised of the Questionnaire on …

Hail, No: Changing The Chief Justice, Edward T. Swaine Jan 2006

Hail, No: Changing The Chief Justice, Edward T. Swaine

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

How do we get a new chief justice? Traditionally, the President decides between nominating a newcomer and promoting a sitting associate justice, and places either nominee before the Senate for its advice and consent. But this is not constitutionally required, or at least not evidently so, and there is no better time to confront this fact. This short essay explains that Congress could develop a different mechanism for promoting justices without subjecting them to a second appointment - providing, for example, that the position would rotate among sitting justices based on seniority, or that the justices would elect a chief …

Emerging Policy And Practice Issues (2005), Steven L. Schooner, Christopher R. Yukins

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

This paper, presented at the West Government Contracts Year in Review Conference (covering 2005), attempts to identify the key trends and issues for 2006 in U.S. federal procurement. In an effort to make sense of the current reforms, the paper focuses upon what seems to be the common imperative underlying the various initiatives: the need to bring order to a procurement function as it devolves away from the Government user - what some might call the "devolution" or "outsourcing" of the contracting function. The paper also addresses emerging issues including, among others, the death of competitive sourcing; the acquisition workforce …

Post-Katrina Reconstruction Liability: Exposing The Inferior Risk-Bearer, Steven L. Schooner, Erin Siuda-Pfeffer

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

This Article describes the doctrinal, functional, and moral flaws inherent in the Gulf Coast Recovery Act (GCRA), a United States Senate bill that would provide liability protection to government contractors engaged in disaster relief work in the areas devastated by Hurricane Katrina, as well as in future disaster areas. First, the Article discusses the history of the government contractor defense and finds that the protection provided by the GCRA is quite unlike the traditional government contractor defense. This Article further argues that this doctrinal departure cannot be justified on grounds of efficiency or fairness, as the GCRA allocates risk away …
