Federal R&D, Drug Discovery, And Pricing: Insights From The Nih-University-Industry Relationship, Wendy H. Schacht Jan 2006

Federal R&D, Drug Discovery, And Pricing: Insights From The Nih-University-Industry Relationship, Wendy H. Schacht

Congressional Research Service Reports

Public interest in approaches that might provide prescription drugs at lower cost, particularly for the elderly, has rekindled discussion over the role the federal government plays in facilitating the creation of new pharmaceuticals for the marketplace. In the current debate, some argue that the government’s financial, scientific, and/or clinical support of health-related research and development (R&D) entitles the public to commensurate considerations in the prices charged for any resulting drugs. Others view government intervention in price decisions based upon initial federal funding as contrary to a long-term trend of government promotion of innovation, technological advancement, and the commercialization of technology …

Effects Of Optaflexx Fed In Combination With Mga On Feedlot Heifer Performance, William A. Grififn, Galen E. Erickson, Bill Dicke, Robert J. Cooper, D. J. Jordon, William Moseley, Gary Sides, Jim S. Drouillard, Terry J. Klopfenstein Jan 2006

Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports

A commercial feedlot experiment was conducted using 1,807 heifers to evaluate the effects of Optaflexx fed in combination with MGA on finishing heifer performance. In heifers receiving MGA throughout the entire 126-143 day feeding period, feeding Optaflexx for the last 31-38 days increased ADG and hot carcass weight compared to heifers fed MGA but not Optaflexx. Heifers fed MGA and Optaflexx had increased DMI, improved feed efficiency and increased final live weight. Carcass quality measurements were not influenced by treatment.

Apobec3g/3f Mediates Intrinsic Resistance Of Monocyte-Derived Dendritic Cells To Hiv-1 Infection, Marjorie Pion, Angela Granelli-Piperno, Bastein Mangeat Jan 2006

Apobec3g/3f Mediates Intrinsic Resistance Of Monocyte-Derived Dendritic Cells To Hiv-1 Infection, Marjorie Pion, Angela Granelli-Piperno, Bastein Mangeat

Publications

HIV-1 infects immature dendritic cells (iDCs), but infection is inefficient compared with activated CD4+ T cells and only involves a small subset of iDCs. We analyzed whether this could be attributed to specific cellular restrictions during the viral life cycle. To study env-independent restriction to HIV-1 infection, we used a single-round infection assay with HIV-1 pseudotyped with vesicular stomatitis virus G protein (HIV-VSVG). Small interfering RNA-mediated depletion of APOBEC3G/3F (A3G/3F), but not TRIM5α, enhanced HIV-1 infection of iDCs, indicating that A3G/3F controls the sensitivity of iDCs to HIV-1 infection. Furthermore, sequences of HIV reverse transcripts revealed G-to-A hypermutation of …

Tmem27: A Cleaved And Shed Plasma Membrane Protein That Stimulates Pancreatic Beta Cell Proliferation, Pinar Akpinar Jan 2006

Tmem27: A Cleaved And Shed Plasma Membrane Protein That Stimulates Pancreatic Beta Cell Proliferation, Pinar Akpinar

Student Theses and Dissertations

The signals and the molecular mechanisms that regulate the replication of terminally differentiated β cells are unclear. In this thesis I report the identification of a gene encoding transmembrane protein 27 (TMEM27) in pancreatic β cells. Expression of Tmem27 is reduced in Tcf1-/- mice, which exhibit defects in proliferation, and is increased in islets of ob/ob, db/db and aP2- Srebp-1c transgenic mice with marked hypertrophy of the endocrine pancreas. Tmem27 is expressed in hormone positive cells at early stages of pancreas development and becomes restricted to pancreatic β cells in the mature pancreas. Biochemical characterization revealed that the Tmem27 exists …

Glyoxylate Metabolism In Mycobacterium Smegmatis, Lubomir Nikolaev Merkov Jan 2006

Glyoxylate Metabolism In Mycobacterium Smegmatis, Lubomir Nikolaev Merkov

Student Theses and Dissertations

Much has been learned about Mycobacterium tuberculosis, the causative agent of tuberculosis, "the great white plague," since the bacterium was isolated and initially characterized by Robert Koch over a century ago. Over the last decade, new genetic tools for manipulation of the bacterium have been developed, its genome has been sequenced, and the search for new vaccines and drug targets has greatly intensified. Yet, surprisingly little is known about which mycobacterial genes are truly important for the organism's ability to persist in the tissues of its human hosts. The metabolic pathways used by the tubercle bacillus to establish and maintain …

Dendritic Cells Mediate The Dual Effects Of Ifn Alpha/Beta In Hcv Immunity, Randy Longman Jan 2006

Dendritic Cells Mediate The Dual Effects Of Ifn Alpha/Beta In Hcv Immunity, Randy Longman

Student Theses and Dissertations

Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infects an estimated 170 million people and is responsible for considerable morbidity and mortality worldwide. Successful resolution of infection is achieved naturally in approximately 30% of infected individuals and correlates with a strong T cell response. Furthermore, treatment with interferon (IFN)α achieves sustained virologic response in approximately 50% of chronically infected individuals. Conventional dendritic cells (cDCs), as the most potent antigen presenting cells, and plasmacytoid DCs (pDCs), as the principal IFNα/β producing cells, serve as potential targets for both immune evasion and therapeutic strategies. In order to evaluate the effects of HCV on DC function, we …

Multimodality And English Education In Ugandan Schools, Maureen Kendrick, Shelley Jones, Harriet Mutonyi, Bonny Norton Jan 2006

Multimodality And English Education In Ugandan Schools, Maureen Kendrick, Shelley Jones, Harriet Mutonyi, Bonny Norton

Institute for Educational Development, East Africa

In this article, we have made the case that multimodal pedagogies that include drawing, photography and drama have significant potential for enhancing teachers’ understanding of the way English is incorporated into students’ lives and how students can improve their understanding and use of the English language. In many ways, multimodal pedagogies represent a hybridization of indigenous and contemporary forms of communication. Drawings, as Vygotsky (1 12-1 13) notes, are children’s earliest representations of experience and stimulate their narrative impulse to create stories. By complementing such drawings with written narratives, teachers might encourage younger children to experiment not only with diverse …

Private Sector Participation In Water Services: Through The Lens Of Stockton, Hastings Law Journal Jan 2006

Private Sector Participation In Water Services: Through The Lens Of Stockton, Hastings Law Journal

UC Law Journal

The mere suggestion of private sector involvement in municipal water services generates acrimonious debate from virtually all sectors of society. So why did Stockton, California attempt "privatize" to its water services in the face of such opposition? Was the government "captured" by "water barons"? Or was the government making a smart business decision?

This Panel discussed the controversial issue of private sector participation in the water services sector, often deemed "privatization" by those who oppose it, through the example of the aborted agreement between OMI/Thames and the City of the Stockton. In so doing, the Panel addressed the larger policy …

Assessing Legal Responses To Prenatal Drug Use: Can Therapeutic Responses Produce More Positive Outcomes Than Punitive Responses, Elizabeth E. Coleman, Monica K. Miller Jan 2006

Assessing Legal Responses To Prenatal Drug Use: Can Therapeutic Responses Produce More Positive Outcomes Than Punitive Responses, Elizabeth E. Coleman, Monica K. Miller

Journal of Law and Health

Expressing a growing concern for fetal well being, the 2006 Idaho Senate passed legislation that permits criminal charges to be brought against women who abuse illegal drugs while pregnant. This bill allows for the potential incarceration of violators for up to five years, as well as a possible $50,000 fine. In some locations, women have the option of choosing to go to drug court instead of serving time in jail or prison. These drug courts provide drug treatment, case management, drug testing, and supervision, while requiring women who abuse illegal drugs to regularly report to scheduled status hearings before a …

Formulation And Implementation Of Environmental Strategies: A Comparison Between U.S. And German Printing Firms, Diana Mross, Sandra Rothenberg Jan 2006

Formulation And Implementation Of Environmental Strategies: A Comparison Between U.S. And German Printing Firms, Diana Mross, Sandra Rothenberg

Books

In recent years, firms have increasingly recognized the strategic advantage of superior environmental performance. In response to changing pressures from stakeholders such as customers, environmental groups, local communities, and regulators, companies have realized that they need to strategically analyze their competitive context and integrate ecological principles into their comprehensive corporate strategies. In deciding on an environmental strategy, managers need to analyze the internal factors, such as the resources, infrastructures, and culture of the firm. They must also analyze the external factors, such as competition, regulations, and market conditions. Despite the advancement in knowledge and practice in the area of strategic …

Sourcing Of Corporate Print: Three Case Studies, Patricia Sorce Jan 2006

Sourcing Of Corporate Print: Three Case Studies, Patricia Sorce

Books

Three case studies were conducted to understand the factors that impact the demand for outsourced commercial printing by corporations. The cases included one university, one large retailer, and one food packager. For Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT), the purchase of a new offset press by the in-plant print shop resulted in a substantial increase in 2003 revenues, primarily through internal charge-backs. Many four-color jobs that formerly had been outsourced to external print services providers were able to be printed internally. One of the primary customers of the in-plant print shop is the Admissions Office. Their budget for printed recruitment materials …

Into The Future: Confirming Our Common Vision, Canadian Forum On Civil Justice Jan 2006

Into The Future: Confirming Our Common Vision, Canadian Forum On Civil Justice

Canadian Forum on Civil Justice

Following Part I of the Into the Future conference in May of this year it was clear that the findings of the 1996 Systems of Civil Justice Task Force Report have been widely accepted, and that many of the recommendations made in that report have been implemented by various Canadian jurisdictions. It was equally clear however that the fundamental problems described in the Report - cost, delay and complexity inhibiting access to justice - have not been resolved, and they remain for virtually all jurisdictions, serious and pressing concerns. This document is written in anticipation of Part II of the …

Unconscionability Found: A Look At Pre-Dispute Mandatory Arbitration Agreements 10 Years After Doctor's Associates, Inc. V. Casarotto, Sandra F. Gavin

Cleveland State Law Review

This Article first explores the Supreme Court's initially reluctant application of the FAA's contract approach to enforceability of arbitration agreements which lasted well into the early 1980s. It then examines federal preemption of state law and the evolution of the arbitration contract as we know it today. Finally, it looks at the application of defenses that exist “at law or in equity for the revocation of any contract” as applied over the past ten years following the Court's decision in Doctor's Associates, Inc. v. Casarotto. This author examines a decade of decisional law and finds a new doctrine of arbitration …

I Do Not Think It Means What You Think It Means: How Kripke And Wittgenstein's Analysis On Rule Following Undermines Justice Scalia's Textualism And Originalism, Daniel S. Goldberg Jan 2006

I Do Not Think It Means What You Think It Means: How Kripke And Wittgenstein's Analysis On Rule Following Undermines Justice Scalia's Textualism And Originalism, Daniel S. Goldberg

Cleveland State Law Review

This Article deals with constitutional hermeneutics. Hermeneutics is the art or theory of interpretation. Deciding what the constitutionally appropriate rule is in any given case hinges on what methods any particular judge utilizes to interpret the Constitution. Constitutional hermeneutics, then, is the theory of constitutional interpretation. In this paper, I address a specific constitutional hermeneutic: textualism-originalism. This Article is a critique of the constitutional hermeneutic of textualism-originalism. As such, my thesis is that the model of interpretation embodied by textualism-originalism cannot possibly serve to do what its proponents assert it does: constrain judicial interpretation. This is because textualism-originalism depends on …

Radke V. County Of Freeborn: The Return Of The Public Duty Rule?, Mehmet K. Konar-Steenberg

Faculty Scholarship

Article explores when Minnesota law provides a cause of action against government actors who are negligent in the performance of their duties. Part II of this Article traces the separate development of the common law public duty rule and the implied statutory cause of action analysis. Part III examines the Hoppe case, where the supreme court seemed to hold that the absence of an implied statutory cause of action precluded the existence of a common law cause of action. Part IV then assesses the Radke court’s effort to resolve the confusion flowing from Hoppe.
