The Epidemiology And Clinical Presentation Of Leprosy In The Pediatric Population Of Paraguay, Jessica Anne Kattan Nov 2006

The Epidemiology And Clinical Presentation Of Leprosy In The Pediatric Population Of Paraguay, Jessica Anne Kattan

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

Background: Several aspects concerning the biology and epidemiology of leprosy remain unknown. It has been recognized that the study of children with leprosy could provide important insight into unanswered questions, particularly if disease manifestations are carefully observed. Methods: A retrospective chart review of 308 cases of children aged 0-14 y/o was conducted at the Ministry of Health Leprosy Department in Asuncion, Paraguay. Data regarding age, gender, leprosy classification, transmission, detection, clinical presentation, presence and class of reaction, and disability were abstracted. Results: The study group ranged from 2 to 14 years of age. The incidence rate and the risk of …

The Effects Of Novel Design Strategies On The Risks And Benefits Of Phase I Oncology Trials, Shlomo Koyfman Nov 2006

The Effects Of Novel Design Strategies On The Risks And Benefits Of Phase I Oncology Trials, Shlomo Koyfman

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

Considerable ethical debate surrounding the risks and benefits of Phase I oncology trials is based on older response and toxicity data that does not account for recent changes in the types of agents and trial design. This study aims to not only update these data, but to investigate the impact of novel trial designs on various clinical outcomes. We performed a review of the literature using the Medline database. Part I included nearly all phase I trials published in 2002. Part II identified phase I studies of cytotoxic agents alone, published from 2002 through 2004. 221 Phase I oncology studies, …

Child Abuse And Bone Fractures In Young Children: Local Trends Over Three Decades, Ilse Larson Nov 2006

Child Abuse And Bone Fractures In Young Children: Local Trends Over Three Decades, Ilse Larson

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

The purpose of this study was to determine the patterns of fractures in children less than three years of age that are distinctive of abuse, and to examine changes in the frequency of abusive fractures in young children evaluated at a major pediatric hospital over three time periods: 1979-1983 (early), 1991-1994 (middle), and 1999-2002 (late). All children 0 to 36 months of age who were treated for bone fractures at a major medical center from 1/99 to 12/02 were selected. Medical records were abstracted for sociodemographic and clinical characteristics, and radiographs were examined. Using specific criteria, each case was rated …

Histone Acetylation And Expression Of Smn, The Spinal Muscular Atrophy Gene, Lauren Kernochan Nov 2006

Histone Acetylation And Expression Of Smn, The Spinal Muscular Atrophy Gene, Lauren Kernochan

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) is an inherited neuromuscular disorder caused by mutation of the Survival Motor Neuron (SMN1) gene. Embryonic lethality is rescued by a nearly identical copy of the gene, SMN2, which exists in variable copy number and produces a small quantity of functional SMN protein. Because disease severity inversely correlates with SMN2 gene copy number and with SMN protein level, one therapeutic strategy has been to increase SMN2 expression. Previous investigators have demonstrated that SMN promoter activity, transcript, and SMN protein are increased in cells treated with histone deacetylase (HDAC) inhibitors, suggesting a role for histone acetylation in …

Vulnerability Of Pathogenic Biofilms To Micavibrio Aeruginosavorus, Daniel Kadouri, Nel C. Venzon, George A. O'Toole Nov 2006

Vulnerability Of Pathogenic Biofilms To Micavibrio Aeruginosavorus, Daniel Kadouri, Nel C. Venzon, George A. O'Toole

Dartmouth Scholarship

The host specificity of the gram-negative exoparasitic predatory bacterium Micavibrio aeruginosavorus was examined. M. aeruginosavorus preyed on Pseudomonas aeruginosa, as previously reported, as well as Burkholderia cepacia, Klebsiella pneumoniae, and numerous clinical isolates of these species. In a static assay, a reduction in biofilm biomass was observed as early as 3 hours after exposure to M. aeruginosavorus, and an ∼100-fold reduction in biofilm cell viability was detected following a a 24-h exposure to the predator. We observed that an initial titer of Micavibrio as low as 10 PFU/well or a time of exposure to the predator as short as 30 …

Robust Control Techniques Enabling Duty Cycle Experiments Utilizing A 6-Dof Crewstation Motion Base, A Full Scale Combat Hybrid Electric Power System, And Long Distance Internet Communications, Marc Compere, Jarrett Goodell, Miguel Simon, Wilford Smith, Mark Brudnak

Publications

The RemoteLink effort supports the U.S. Army's objective for developing and fielding next generation hybrid-electric combat vehicles. It is a distributed soldierin- the-Ioop and hardware-in-the-Ioop environment with a 6-DOF motion base for operator realism, a full-scale combat hybrid electric power system, and an operational context provided by OneSAF. The driver/gunner crewstations rest on one of two 6-DOF motion bases at the U.S. Army TARDEC Simulation Laboratory (TSL). The hybrid power system is located 2,450 miles away at the TARDEC Power and Energy System Integration Laboratory (P&E SIL). The primary technical challenge in the RemoteLink is to operate both laboratories together …

Privatization And The Law And Economics Of Political Advocacy, Alexander Volokh Nov 2006

Privatization And The Law And Economics Of Political Advocacy, Alexander Volokh

ExpressO

A common argument against privatization is that private providers, motivated by self-interest, will advocate changes in substantive policy. In this Article, I evaluate this argument, using, as a case study, the argument against prison privatization based on the possibility that the private prison industry will distort the criminal law by advocating incarceration.

This “political influence” argument applies at least as well to public provision: Government agencies, too, lobby for changes in substantive law. In the prison industry, for instance, it is unclear whether private firms advocate incarceration to any significant extent, but public guard unions are known to do so …
