This study examined oral education components that could be successfully implemented with culturally and linguistically diverse deaf and hard of hearing (DHH) children and their families. A literature review of oral program strategies used with culturally diverse families and their children with special needs, and federal guidelines related to programs serving DHH children were conducted. Recent statistics of children in programs for DHH students who are from racially and linguistically diverse backgrounds were discussed. Additional data sources included classroom observations and multidisciplinary interviews. Mental health needs of older persons are projected to grow significantly over the course of the next years. Consequently, the need for training counselors to work with the aging population is presented. Addressed are 4 curriculum models, as well as areas of training related to geriatric counseling, that can be incorporated into counselor training programs. Finally, specific suggestions and procedures for counseling the elderly are included.

Role Satisfaction: Grandparents Raising Grandchildren, Noreen Orman Ayres

Three psychosocial dynamics were assessed for their effect on role satisfaction among grandchildren: (1) the impact of expanding a household on a limited fixed income, (2) health issues of the grandparent as they apply to stamina, and (3) the interaction with their existing social structure to include grandchildren (adjustments, prioritizing, and social isolation). Sampling included a population of 33 custodial grandparents (age=55 and older; male and female; various ethnicities) and selected from a Grandparents Raising Grandchildren support group in Idyllwild, California. The study focused on the attitudes and beliefs regarding perceived and actual burden experienced by Latino caregivers and their use of formal support services. It also looked at the needs of Latino caregivers and explored their beliefs about why they had taken on the caregiver role, the responsibilities the role entailed, and coping skills used by these caregivers. Participants were obtained from two Alzheimer's caregiver support groups in the East Los Angeles area, and an adult day health care center in the high desert area of San Bernardino county. The narrative life review process revealed a wealth of information on the effect spirituality had upon various aspects of respondents' lives.

African American Caregiver Burden: Stress Factors And Utilization Of Services, Lorna Jean Levias

The project attempted to understand what factors create the highest levels of stress for African-American caregivers. Quantitative data was gathered from a self-administered questionnaire given to caregivers that attend Inland Caregiver Resource Center and take their loved ones to a Davita Dialysis center in the Riverside area. Participants were asked to complete the Caregiver Burden Scale (CBS) and additional questions regarding demographics and community services known and used by the caregiver. The findings indicated that the age of the patient receiving care and the lack of attendance at any type of support group were the two elements which markedly contributed …

With the aging of the baby boomers, there is a concern over the likelihood of an increase in reported cases of perpetrators of financial abuse of elders residing in San Bernardino County as reported by Adult Protective Services (APS). This study included 201 confirmed financial abuse cases(data from the San Bernardino Department of Aging and Adult Services) for the period of January 13-December 19, 2005 in the high desert areas. It is the hope that this study will encourage representatives from APS, law enforcement and the Ombudsman Program to look for solutions and develop effective training programs that will help …

This study looked at the extent to which an elder's impaired mental functioning (IMF) is a factor in Adult Protective Services (APS). The design was a quantitative exploratory study utilizing a content analysis of 50 APS case files from San Bernardino County's Department of Aging and Adult Services.
