Community Members’ Perspectives Of The Role The Intergenerational Dialogue Process Served In Changing Residents’ Attitudes And Strategies For Working Together: A Multiple Case Study In Two Rural Midwestern Communities, Terry R. Waugh

Department of Agricultural Leadership, Education, and Communication: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

The purpose of this multiple case study was to describe community members’ perspectives of the role the Intergenerational Dialogue Process served in changing resident’s attitudes and behaviors in two Midwestern rural communities. Approximately one year after their involvement in the Intergeneration Dialogue, ten people (five from each community) were interviewed to describe if participating in the Intergenerational Dialogue changed their attitudes and behaviors toward seeking solutions that could resolve rural community issues. Three themes emerged from the interviews: understanding the generations, community action, and changes in communities. While multiple learning opportunities exist as the aging experience unfolds, elders facing some of the most complex physical and emotional challenges are often perceived as "too old to learn." For those living in long-term care facilities (LTC), lack of consideration as learners hinders numerous opportunities for growth. However, within the contexts of aging and learning, an attempt to understand elders as becoming and conceptualize them as learners might better serve their experience in long-term care.

Background: Medical-surgical or adult health nursing is a complex specialty that requires a wide-ranging literature to inform its research and practice. Several excellent qualitative aids exist for collection development for this field, but quantitative studies are few. While one bibliometric study of journals exists, no recent work had been done in this area.

Method: The Mapping the Literature of Nursing Project protocol was used. Four source journals were selected, and a citation analysis of articles from 1996 to 1998 was conducted.

Results: A list of the most frequently cited journals was created, using Bradford’s Law of Scattering. The list demonstrates …

There are relationship between environmental issues and other issues that enclose to the human life. There are two dimensions of Environmental contex, namely: physical spatial context and social context. In fact, anthropogenic activities have serious impacts to the damage of the environment. The relation between environmental issues and poverty is very complex. The World Bank identified three main relations between the degradation of environmental condition and the living condition of poor people, namely: the environmental health, the livelihoods of poor people,and the vulnerability of people living below poverty line.

The Effect Of Season And Ramadan Fasting On The Onset Of Acute Cholecystitis, Seyed V. Hosseini, Mahsa Torabijahromi, Mahnaz Mosallaei, Babak Sabet, Saeedeh Pourahmad

OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether Ramadan fasting and seasonal variation has any effect on the onset of acute cholecystitis. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted in Faghihi and Namazee Hospitals between September 1999 to August 2004. All files of patients with definite diagnosis of gallstone induced acute cholecystitis were reviewed for age, gender, date and method of treatment in relation to seasons and Ramadan fasting month. For comparison, we used Shaaban months (prior months) and Shavval months (following months). RESULTS: Eight hundred and sixty-four files (32.7% male and 62.8% were female) with definite diagnosis of acute cholecystitis were reviewed. Mean age …

Is Early Mortality Related To Timing Of Surgery After Fracture Femur In The Elderly?, Abdallah Al-Omran, Mir Sadat-Ali

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study is to review the outcome of fracture femur in elderly patients (>65 years), and to identify cause or causes of mortality. METHODS: Between January 1996 and December 2002, 115 patients over 65 years were admitted and operated at King Fahd University Hospital, Al-Khobar. Fifty-six of patients suffered with femoral fractures. Demographic data collected included age, gender, site of fracture, co-morbidities, delay in surgery, duration of surgery, implant used and Anesthesia Society of America scoring (ASA). A minimum follow up of 12 months was considered important for inclusion in the study. Patients remained alive …
