The Brightening Light On The Journey Of Lehi And Sariah, Daniel B. Mckinlay
The Brightening Light On The Journey Of Lehi And Sariah, Daniel B. Mckinlay
Journal of Book of Mormon Studies
Until now, nearly all commentaries on the Book of Mormon have focused mainly on issues of doctrine rather than beginning with the text itself. Royal Skousen’s critical text project does the opposite by treating the text itself on the word and phrase level. Skousen weighs nearly all possible evidence to deduce the events that may have led to the variations seen in the texts and to draw conclusions about which readings are most likely original. Some conclusions may surprise readers, but Skousen is more interested in candidly documenting what the texts reveal than in interpreting all the implications. Several lengthy …
An Archaeologist's View, Jeffrey R. Chadwick
An Archaeologist's View, Jeffrey R. Chadwick
Journal of Book of Mormon Studies
Royal Skousen’s most significant contribution to Book of Mormon scholarship, this paper states, is in openly and systematically detailing the thousands of variants that occur across two manuscripts and twenty editions and showing that these variations do not affect the message or validity of the book as a witness of Jesus Christ. Skousen’s work also offers new insights into the process of translating and publishing the Book of Mormon. Though the work of translation appears to have involved a number of different methods, we can nevertheless be sure that the Book of Mormon was translated by the “gift and power …
In Search Of Lehi's Trail—30 Years Later, Lynn M. Hilton
In Search Of Lehi's Trail—30 Years Later, Lynn M. Hilton
Journal of Book of Mormon Studies
Some critics of the Book of Mormon have suggested that Joseph Smith produced the book through a process known as “automatic writing,” a rapid flow of language claimed to be generated through paranormal means such as trance-like states or claimed communications with spirits. This paper presents an overview of some prominent claims of automatic writing and examines the historical and scientific evidence for the authenticity of at least some of these cases. After discussing the similarities between these works and the Book of Mormon, the paper outlines a number of features in the Book of Mormon that clearly differentiate it …

Post-Katrina New Orleans: The Strangely Vacant Article Ii Actor Denying Or Delaying Right Or Justice, Cynthia A. Drew
ExpressO
Because this work is not literature but at its most essential is a mirror of the conundrum presented by the rapidly approaching moment of Constitutional politics in our present American national life, that mirror perforce shows but a pastiche, a mosaic not yet complete, a jigsaw puzzle whose pieces keep shifting in space before they can be placed. As yet no “final answer” has appeared on any horizon to the dilemmas posed by the consequences of the Presidential actions analyzed in the Leitmotif -- particularly the decidedly non-heroic failures to act that had such lethal consequences for so many of …
Waters Of The United States: Theory, Practice And Integrity At The Supreme Court, Jamison E. Colburn
Waters Of The United States: Theory, Practice And Integrity At The Supreme Court, Jamison E. Colburn
ExpressO
In the Supreme Court's two wetlands cases this Term, a question of statutory interpretation divided the justices sharply, in part because so much rides on the particular statutory provision at issue. The provision, a cryptic definition within the Clean Water Act (CWA), has now provided three separate occasions at the Court where the justices have confronted (1) the Chevron doctrine and the Court’s own ambivalence toward it, and (2) the CWA's enormous project of restoring the chemical, physical, and biological integrity of the Nation's waters. In this essay, I argue that the way the Court went about resolving its differences …

Large Wind Shift On The Great Plains During The Medieval Warm Period, Venkataramana Sridhar, David B. Loope, James B. Swinehart, Joseph A. Mason, Robert J. Oglesby, Clinton M. Rowe
Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications
Spring-summer winds from the south move moist air from the Gulf of Mexico to the Great Plains. Rainfall in the growing season sustains prairie grasses that keep large dunes in the Nebraska Sand Hills immobile. Longitudinal dunes built during the Medieval Warm Period (800 to 1000 years before the present) record the last major period of sand mobility. These dunes are oriented NW-SE and are composed of cross-strata with bipolar dip directions. The trend and structure of the dunes record a drought that was initiated and sustained by a historically unprecedented shift of spring-summer atmospheric circulation over the Plains: Moist …
Is Social Studies Being Taught?: A Study Of One District, Katie Sorensen
Is Social Studies Being Taught?: A Study Of One District, Katie Sorensen
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to determine the status of social studies in elementary classrooms in a local school district. Status was determined by assessing the amount of instructional time that was devoted to social studies, its perceived importance in the curriculum, and challenges associated with teaching social studies. Three research questions were identified in order to examine the status of social studies in Apple School District (pseudonym): (1) To what degree is social studies being taught in the elementary grades one through five? (2) How important is social studies compared to other areas of the curriculum? (3) What …

The Water Infrastructure Challenge In Victoria, Robyn Mcleod
2006
Water resources, and the infrastructure to sustainability manage these resources, are a priority for the Victorian State Government. Prolonged drought, projected population growth, combined with the potential impact of climate change and the economic importance of industry and agriculture to the economic prosperity of the State, emphasise the importance of investment in innovative and efficient water infrastructure systems.

Eating Disorder Risk In Subgroups Of College Freshman Women, Karen E. Gochnour
Theses and Dissertations
The intent of this study was to identify subgroups within the college population having a heightened risk for eating disorders. The information for this analysis was retrieved from an existing data set. The two variables that were compared were self selection of college major at the initial collection during freshman year. The sample size of 1,924 was used to see if subgroups of college majors had a heightened risk. Twenty groups composed of similar majors were studied. The majors of Dance, Dietetics, Physical Education, and Communications had heightened risk according to analysis percentage of each group in the clinical range …
The Impacts Of Land Use Change On Water Resources And Traditional Acequia Culture In Northern New Mexico, Marquita Ortiz Et Al.
The Impacts Of Land Use Change On Water Resources And Traditional Acequia Culture In Northern New Mexico, Marquita Ortiz Et Al.
2006
Rural areas throughout the western United States are undergoing rapid and far-reaching land use changes that impact water management, riparian ecosystems, and traditional cultures. Impacts to water resource use and management include: potential risks of groundwater contamination due to increased numbers of single household septic systems, potential overdraft of groundwater resources, surface water quality impacts, and changes in the distribution of water supplies from agricultural to municipal/industrial uses. In northern New Mexico, the acequia water use regime and attendant acequia-related cultural values are at particular risk due to increasing urbanization pressures and the potential impacts on actual water use, water …

Speaking Out Of The Dust: Religious Reenactments With The Specific Iconic Identity Of Place, Heidi Diane Lewis
Speaking Out Of The Dust: Religious Reenactments With The Specific Iconic Identity Of Place, Heidi Diane Lewis
Theses and Dissertations
Sometimes, the place where a play is performed is as important as or more important than the play itself. The first known theatrical rituals were performed in spaces which came to hold deep religious significance. Many religious traditions regard certain places as sacred because of spiritually significant events which took place there, sometimes involving the presence of Deity. In an effort to build on that sacrality, sometimes religious cultures bring theatre to these spaces, which, in turn, tend to alter the nature of the theatrical event. This seems especially true in regards to theatre which presents a re-enactment of the …
An Interpretation Of Modern: Costume Designs For An Adaptation Of Shakespeare's The Two Gentlemen Of Verona, Priscilla Ruth Hao
An Interpretation Of Modern: Costume Designs For An Adaptation Of Shakespeare's The Two Gentlemen Of Verona, Priscilla Ruth Hao
Theses and Dissertations
Shakespeare's The Two Gentlemen of Verona, is accredited as being one of his early comedies. It is not as widely popular as Taming of the Shrew or A Midsummer's Night, and is also known "as the comedy with a problem ending", this being the immediate forgiveness of Silvia to Valentine and Julia to Proteus. My initial reaction to this ending was of disgust and wonderment of how a 21st century audience would react to this. The director, Alex Mackenzie, a fellow graduate MA student, approached the script with very strong initial concepts but at the same time her approach was …
Moving Towards More Efficient Water Markets: Institutional Barriers And Innovations, Charles W. Howe
Moving Towards More Efficient Water Markets: Institutional Barriers And Innovations, Charles W. Howe
2006
In the western U.S., one finds a few water markets that function quite efficiently from an economic point of view. Most water markets, some operational for over a hundred years, are highly imperfect, characterized by high transaction costs, asymmetric information on buyer & seller sides, long administrative or legal processes, and excessive brokerage fees. The question is What features of the relatively efficient water markets account for their success and how many of these features can be carried over to the larger set of inefficient water markets?. What changes in the legal and institutional frameworks would be required? Examples will …
Canada's Water In A Continental Context, Frank Quinn
Canada's Water In A Continental Context, Frank Quinn
2006
This presentation considers water export proposals between, and the pattern of existing interbasin diversions within, Canada and the United States in the latter half of the 20th century. Neither appears to have much potential for growth, because of a fundamental shift in developed economies from water supply to demand management. But trend is one thing, destiny another. Canadians, and their American neighbors in the Great Lakes basin, continue to pursue legislative protection for their water heritage over the long term.
An Update On The Tamu Interdisciplinary Graduate Water Degree, Valeen Silvy, Ronald A. Kaiser
An Update On The Tamu Interdisciplinary Graduate Water Degree, Valeen Silvy, Ronald A. Kaiser
2006
Water is a keystone natural resources in Texas required to sustain human life, a viable economy and a livable environment. Over the past 50 years, population growth and shifts, economic development, technologic innovation and changing political systems have intensified competition for Texas water resources necessitating a greater emphasis on the integrative and adaptive management. In response to this challenge Texas A&M University instituted in 2005 an interdisciplinary graduate degree program in water management and hydrologic sciences. The following outlines the curriculum, administrative structure, current and projected student enrollment for the program.
Biogeography Of Buarremon Brush-Finches (Aves, Emberizinae): Integrating Ecology, Evolution, And Systematics, Carlos Daniel Cadena
Biogeography Of Buarremon Brush-Finches (Aves, Emberizinae): Integrating Ecology, Evolution, And Systematics, Carlos Daniel Cadena
Dissertations
Ecological and historical approaches to studying species¿ geographic ranges have yet to be unified. Ideal scenarios for integrating ecology with evolutionary biology in biogeography are those where contemporary ecological interactions may have influenced species¿ distributions historically, driving the evolution of ecological niches. I focused on understanding the origin of elevational distributions of species, and specifically on the role of interspecific competition in the origin of complementary elevational ranges. To test hypotheses about the origin of elevational distributions, I followed a combined approach involving molecular phylogenetics, phylogeography, population genetics, and ecological niche modeling. I focused on Buarremon torquatus and B. brunneinucha …
Menendez Versus Mickey: A Study Of Heritage Tourism In Florida, Monica Rowland
Menendez Versus Mickey: A Study Of Heritage Tourism In Florida, Monica Rowland
USF St. Petersburg campus Master's Theses (Graduate)
The National Trust for Historic Preservation defines heritage tourism as: “traveling to experience the places and activities that authentically represent the stories and peoples of the past and present. It includes irreplaceable historic, cultural, and natural resources.”1 Heritage tourism is a lucrative industry in the United States. On average, heritage tourists spend $623 per trip compared to $457 for all U.S. travelers.2 The rise of heritage tourism is inextricably linked with several trends in American society, namely: the historic preservation movement, the desire for a sense of place, and nostalgia. These motivating tendencies often inspire problems of authenticity, commodification, and …
The Dominant Water Estate, Olen Paul Matthews
The Dominant Water Estate, Olen Paul Matthews
2006
The United States and other common law countries have a rich tradition of protecting property rights in land. In fact in earlier times these land rights included water as part of the right. Remnants of this are still visible in the riparian rights doctrine for surface water and in some ground water doctrines. Traditionally land use practices were protected even when they interfered with water usage. But in dry areas the dominance of land rights over water rights does not make sense. Water is more valuable than land in arid locations. Shouldn’t water be protected from land use practices that …

Water Reallocation By Settlement: Who Wins, Who Loses, Who Pays?, Rosalind H. Bark
ExpressO
The 2004 Arizona Water Settlements Act (AWSA) is the current standard for what a comprehensive, negotiated settlement can achieve in terms of water rights reallocation, water resource management, and water supply reliability enhancement. This note reviews the flows of money and water specified in Titles I and II of the AWSA to identify the signatory and non-signatory parties that benefit from the settlement and the allocation of costs between the various parties to the agreement. Opportunity costs are also considered. Innovative elements of the agreement are discussed particularly those that improve water supply reliability for the Gila River Indian Community …

Vue Yang was born in Nong Het, Laos, though his family moved to Xieng Khouang province after the defeat of the French in 1954. He began school in 1958 in Long Tieng, but moved to study in Vientiane in 1961. He was later one of a small number of Lao students sent to study in Paris, where he eventually chose to study engineering. After 1973, Yang stayed in France, where he was offered—and turned down—an opportunity to earn a Ph.D. in Chemistry. After working in the United Arab Emirates, he finally came to Sheboygan, Wisconsin, where his parents had settled. …
