Freight Transport, Seamlessness, And Competitive Advantage In The Global Economy, Cristina Capineri, Thomas R. Leinbach Jan 2006

Freight Transport, Seamlessness, And Competitive Advantage In The Global Economy, Cristina Capineri, Thomas R. Leinbach

Geography Faculty Publications

Freight transport has emerged as one of the most critical and dynamic aspects of the transport sector where change has become the norm. It is now the main element supporting global commodity and more generally supply chains. Yet the lack of seamlessness and inefficiencies in general as well as the rising costs and complexities of shipping and delivering goods are adding to profit pressures faced by manufacturers across the globe. Our paper first discusses the concept of seamlessness, and then examines some of the consequences of the lack of seamlessness in terms of freight transport inefficiencies. We then begin to …

Living On The Past: The Role Of Truth Commissions In Post-Conflict Societies And The Case Study Of Northern Ireland, Christopher K. Connolly Jan 2006

Living On The Past: The Role Of Truth Commissions In Post-Conflict Societies And The Case Study Of Northern Ireland, Christopher K. Connolly

Cornell International Law Journal

Examines the possibility of applying the truth commission model in Northern Ireland where the past plays a significant role in shaping daily lives & worldviews. A review of the theory & practice of truth commissions is followed by a description of Northern Ireland's long & complex conflicts that point to the need for some form of truth-seeking. Attention is given to the difficulties such a process would face. Three recent truth-seeking initiatives are critiqued: the Northern Ireland Victims' Commissioner; the Bloody Sunday Inquiry; & a series of decisions by the European Court of Human Rights. A framework is presented for …

The Parallel Worlds Of Corporate Governance And Labor Law, Peer Zumbansen Jan 2006

The Parallel Worlds Of Corporate Governance And Labor Law, Peer Zumbansen

Comparative Research in Law & Political Economy

This paper engages the concept of transnational law (TL) in a way that goes beyond the by now accustomed usages with regard to the development of legal norms and the observation of legal action across nation-state boundaries, involving both state and nonstate actors. The concept of TL can serve to illustrate a much further-reaching set of developments in norm creation and legal regulation. TL is here understood not only as a body of legal norms, but it is also employed as a methodological approach to illustrate common and shared challenges and responses to legal regulatory systems worldwide. In the case …

Global Macroeconomic Trends, Thomas Power Jan 2006

Global Macroeconomic Trends, Thomas Power

Articles

The business of real estate is but a subset of the wider investment markets and macroeconomic trends will significantly shape the way real estate investment decisions are made. The McKinsey Institute is a global economic consultancy firm providing cutting-edge research on a wide range of macroeconomic and business trends. This article reviews macroeconomic trends that they believe will transform the global economy. McKinsey research show that “over two-thirds of organic growth of western companies can be attributed to being in the right markets and geographies” and “companies that ride the tide succeed and those that swim against it usually struggle” …

Cultural Compactness, Daniel R. Oritz Jan 2006

Cultural Compactness, Daniel R. Oritz

Michigan Law Review First Impressions

The Supreme Court’s opinions in LULAC v. Perry, the Texas redistricting case, confounded expectation. While many believed that the Court would develop the law governing partisan gerrymandering in one direction or another, it did not. As exactly before, such claims are justiciable but there is no law to govern them. In other words, the courthouse doors are open, but until some plaintiff advances a novel theory persuasive to five justices, no claims will succeed. On the other hand, few expected the Court to make any major changes to doctrine under the Voting Rights Act and Shaw v. Reno. But LULAC …

Strict In Theory, Loopy In Fact, Nathaniel Persily Jan 2006

Strict In Theory, Loopy In Fact, Nathaniel Persily

Michigan Law Review First Impressions

Most Supreme Court-watchers find the decision in LULAC v. Perry notable for the ground it breaks concerning Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act and the ground it refuses to break on the topic of partisan gerrymandering. I tend to think the Court’s patchwork application of Section 2 to strike down a district on vote dilution grounds is not all that dramatic, nor is its resolution of the partisan gerrymandering claims all that surprising. The truly unprecedented development in the case for me was Justice Scalia’s vote to uphold what he considered a racial classification under the Equal Protection Clause, …

Historical Glacier And Climate Fluctuations At Mount Hood, Oregon, Karl Lillquist, Karen Walker Jan 2006

Historical Glacier And Climate Fluctuations At Mount Hood, Oregon, Karl Lillquist, Karen Walker

Geography Faculty Scholarship

Terminus fluctuations of five glaciers and the correspondence of these fluctuations to temperature and precipitation patterns were assessed at Oregon's Mount Hood over the period 1901–2001. Historical photographs, descriptions, and climate data, combined with contemporary GPS measurements and GIS analysis, revealed that each glacier experienced overall retreat, ranging from −62 m at the Newton Clark Glacier to −1102 m at the Ladd Glacier. Within this overall trend, Mount Hood's glaciers experienced two periods each of retreat and advance. Glaciers retreated between 1901 and 1946 in response to rising temperatures and declining precipitation. A mid-century cool, wet period led to glacier …

Remote Detection Of Forest Structure In The White Mountains Of New Hampshire: An Integration Of Waveform Lidar And Hyperspectral Remote Sensing Data, Jeanne Elizabeth Anderson Jan 2006

Remote Detection Of Forest Structure In The White Mountains Of New Hampshire: An Integration Of Waveform Lidar And Hyperspectral Remote Sensing Data, Jeanne Elizabeth Anderson

Doctoral Dissertations

The capability of waveform lidar, used singly and through integration with high-resolution spectral data, to describe and predict various aspects of the structure of a northern temperate forest is explored. Waveform lidar imagery was acquired in 1999 and 2003 over Bartlett Experimental Forest in the White Mountains of central New Hampshire using NASA's airborne Laser Vegetation Imaging Sensor (LVIS). High-resolution spectral imagery from 1997 and 2003 was likewise acquired using NASA's Airborne Visible/Infrared Imaging Spectrometer (AVIRIS). USDA Forest Service Northeastern Research Station (USFS NERS) 2001-2003 inventory data was used to define basal area, above-ground biomass, quadratic mean stem diameter and …

Little Short Of National Murder: Forced Migration And The Making Of Diasporas In The Atlantic World, 1745--1865, Jeffrey A. Fortin Jan 2006

Little Short Of National Murder: Forced Migration And The Making Of Diasporas In The Atlantic World, 1745--1865, Jeffrey A. Fortin

Doctoral Dissertations

Removal---or, the exile and forced migration of marginalized cultural and racial groups from one region of the British Empire and, later, the United States, to another less volatile region---emerged as a key tool in the construction of the Anglo-American Atlantic World. British officials used removal to secure the empire, ridding the realm of Catholic menaces, black insurgents, challenges to the throne and the brutal conflicts between English colonists and Native Americans. American leaders, after the conclusion of the American Revolution, viewed removal as a viable solution to the problem of slavery and the potential troubles induced by freeing the slaves. …

A Molecular And Morphological Investigation Of The Red Seaweed Genus Porphyra (Bangiales, Rhodophyta) In The Northwest Atlantic, Troy Lee Bray Jan 2006

A Molecular And Morphological Investigation Of The Red Seaweed Genus Porphyra (Bangiales, Rhodophyta) In The Northwest Atlantic, Troy Lee Bray

Doctoral Dissertations

To evaluate the possible occurrence of cryptic Porphyra taxa in the Northwest Atlantic, extensive field collections were made during winter and spring periods when relatively few previous collections had been made. Approximately 100 different sites extending from Chance Harbor, New Brunswick, Canada to Rye, New York, USA, were sampled during multiple years (2001-2005). Historical specimens from several herbaria (NHA, FH, BM, WTU, MICH, US) were also examined for possible cryptic taxa. A combination of morphological and molecular tools was used to screen both recent and historical collections.

Sequences from the plastid-encoded, ribulose-1, 5-bisphosphate carboxylase-oxygenase large subunit (rbcL) gene and rbcL- …
