Relocating Segregation : The Pea Island Life-Saving Station, Jessica Caldwell

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

This study examines racial segregation through the lens of the first and only all African-American crew in the history of the United States Life Saving Service (L.S.S.), predecessor to the United States Coast Guard. The all-black Pea Island station, under Richard Etheridge’s leadership, remained the only L.S.S. station with any black surfmen from 1880 until WWII. This study will consider the geography of the station’s location on the Outer Banks of North Carolina, the life of its keeper, Richard Etheridge, and the nature of the Life-Saving Service to show this segregated station provided some benefits to the men who served …

A Comparison Of The Effect Of Single-Sex Versus Mixed-Sex Classes On Middle School Student Achievement, Carol E. Thom

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

The purpose of this study was to compare the effect of single-sex versus mixedsex classes on middle school student achievement. It was a case study of Stonewall Jackson Middle School in Charleston, West Virginia, an inner-city school with approximately 600 students, of which 30% were minority (mostly black), 30% were special needs, and 70% were classified low socio-economic status (SES). Student WESTEST (West Virginia Educational Standards Test) scores in reading/language arts and math were collected and compared from the school years 2003-2004 and 2004-2005. Each student’s scores from the first year were compared to that same student’s scores from the …

Use Of Gis In The Provision Of Emergency Services In Small Municipalities Huntington, Wv As A Case Study, Maria Eulalia Simental

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Although disaster management is a national concern, at the most basic level it is the responsibility of county emergency management agencies to cope with disasters. The objective of this research is to gauge the extent of the adoption and future benefits of the use of GIS technology by first responders and stakeholders to assist in the planning and response to an emergency and to provide a working GIS application model for emergency response in small municipalities, using Huntington, West Virginia as a case study, and how the resulting tools linked with GIS can provide visual and interact decision support capabilities …

‘Flex Your Power’: Energy Crises And The Shifting Rhetoric Of The Grid, Anne Marie Todd, A. Wood Jan 2006

‘Flex Your Power’: Energy Crises And The Shifting Rhetoric Of The Grid, Anne Marie Todd, A. Wood

Faculty Publications

In response to widespread power outages, rolling blackouts, and ubiquitous energy debates, this essay considers our relation to energy and the grid that produces it. First, we investigate California's multimedia Flex Your Power campaign, which defines consumers as nodes of the grid to emphasize their responsibility to maintain a stable energy supply. Second, we examine state and national responses to the 2003 blackout in the Northeastern United States, attending to three strategies through which grid administrators sought to impose order, enact hierarchy, and deindividuate power. We propose that the grid invokes personalization at the "local" level and abstraction at the …

An Evaluation Of Two Gcms: Simulation Of North American Teleconnection Indices And Synoptic Phenomena, Justin T. Schoof, S C. Pryor Jan 2006

An Evaluation Of Two Gcms: Simulation Of North American Teleconnection Indices And Synoptic Phenomena, Justin T. Schoof, S C. Pryor

Publications

We evaluate the ability of two coupled atmospheric–oceanic GCMs – the Hadley Center’s third generation coupled climate model (HadCM3) and the Canadian Center for Climate Modeling and Analysis second-generation coupled model (CGCM2) – to simulate the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO), the Pacific North American teleconnection pattern (PNA), and map patterns in the Midwest region of the United States, relative to NCEP/NCAR reanalysis (NNR) data. The observed (NNR-derived) and GCM-derived probability distributions and temporal behavior of the daily teleconnection indices exhibit agreement over the 1990–2001 reference period, and both GCMs successfully reproduce the range of 500-hPa map patterns over the study …

Connectedness In The Wildernes Experience: Interpretation Of Sense Of Place During A National Outdoor Leadership School Instructor Course, Garrett Hutson Jan 2006

Connectedness In The Wildernes Experience: Interpretation Of Sense Of Place During A National Outdoor Leadership School Instructor Course, Garrett Hutson

Research in Outdoor Education

This study explored the concept of sense of place during a 30-day National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS) extended wilderness experience in a mountain range in the western United States. Sense of place is not a fixed concept, but may be best understood as a moving force that touches people's emotions on a variety of levels through the bonds they form with places (Tuan, 1974). The term has been utilized in such fields as geography and architecture since the early 1970s (Williams & Stewart, 1998). Scholars of leisure, recreation, and outdoor education are increasingly utilizing this concept because it holistically captures …

Beneath These Red Cliffs, Ronald L. Holt Jan 2006

Beneath These Red Cliffs, Ronald L. Holt

All USU Press Publications

In this new and updated edition---with a foreword by Lora Tom, chairwoman of the Paiute Indian Tribe of Utah---Holt recounts the survival of a people against all odds. A compound of rapid white settlement of the most productive Southern Paiute homelands, especially their farmlands near tributaries of the Colorado River; conversion by and labor for the Mormon settlers; and government neglect placed the Utah Paiutes in a state of dependency that ironically culminated in the 1957 termination of their status as federally recognized Indians. The recognition and attendant services were not restored until 1980, but the act revived the Paiutes' …

Globalization And Income Distribution Inequality Within Countries, Lei Zhou, Basudeb Biswas, Tyler J. Bowles Jan 2006

Globalization And Income Distribution Inequality Within Countries, Lei Zhou, Basudeb Biswas, Tyler J. Bowles

Economic Research Institute Study Papers

The issue studied in this paper is whether globalization affects income inequality within countries. Using the newly created Kearney (2002, 2003, 2004) data and the principal component analysis (PCA), we create two globalization indices. The Gini coefficient of a country is regressed on the indices respectively. One of the globalization indices is the equally weighted index. The other is derived from PCA. Sixty countries were involved in this study, including both developed and developing countries. The main conclusions obtained from the analysis can be summarized as follows: there is a negative relationship between the globalization index and the Gini coefficient …

A Guide For Implementation Of The Montessori Theory Of Education In The Lower Elementary Program, Sheila G. Wolfe Jan 2006

A Guide For Implementation Of The Montessori Theory Of Education In The Lower Elementary Program, Sheila G. Wolfe

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

In this project, the author categorized the Montessori curriculum into grade levels so that parents will know what the expectations will be for the average student by the end of 1st, 2nd, or 3rd grade. The Montessori materials are divided into subjects across the curriculum. The scope and sequence was developed by a research of various Montessori schools and training centers. These schools were classified as private, public, or charter; some had an affiliation with AMI or AMS. The information received was checked and cross-referenced, comparing the information from one school with another. Next, a model was established which became …

Mental Health Courts And Title Ii Of The Ada: Accessibility To State Court Systems For Individuals With Mental Disabilities And The Need For Diversion, S. Elizabeth Malloy

Faculty Articles and Other Publications

Access to the judicial system, a fundamental right that has paramount importance in our society, can often present obstacles to people with disabilities in a variety of significant ways. Yet Title II mandates that state and local judicial facilities be accessible to individuals with disabilities. Recent shifts in paradigmatic approaches to special populations such as drug offenders and offenders with mental disabilities have lead to the creation of mental health courts specifically designed to address the needs of the persons with mental disabilities in order to avoid incarceration. Early outcomes in states like Ohio suggest mental health courts may better …
