Women And War: A Bibliography Of Recent Works, Annette Demers Jan 2006

Women And War: A Bibliography Of Recent Works, Annette Demers

International Journal of Legal Information

Since the end of the Cold War, a number of regional conflicts worldwide have devastated innocent populations. The conflicts in Rwanda and in the Balkans come to mind as prominent examples. With these developments the literature about women and war has proliferated.

In particular, there is a growing emphasis on the impact of war on women. The literature emphasizes a number of concerns. In most countries, women form the center of the family and bear the economic and social burden of keeping their families together throughout times of conflict and upheaval. Women's essential role in childbearing and procreation makes them …

Torture And Legitimacy, Ronald Sundstrom Jan 2006

Torture And Legitimacy, Ronald Sundstrom

Philosophy

George W. Bush’s administration has undermined the legitimacy of the United States of America as a member of the international community through an astonishing array of unilateral policies that do not respect the interests and concerns of that community. On matters of serious concern to the peoples of the world, such as the global environment, human rights, nuclear weapons proliferation, terrorism, and, of course, war, the United States has pursued its foreign policy interests guided by “political realism” and a stubborn commitment to its narrowly interpreted national interests. It is not enough, however, to merely identify and condemn the legitimacy …

Digital Equity In Education: A Multilevel Examination Of Differences In And Relationships Between Computer Access, Computer Use And State-Level Technology Policies, Jonathan D. Becker

Educational Leadership Publications

Using data from the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) state assessment and a survey of state-level technology policies, this study examined digital equity in education as a multilevel organizational phenomenon with data from 70,382 students in 3,479 schools and 40 states. Students in rural schools or schools with higher percentages of African American students were likely to have less access to computers. With respect to computer use, girls and students eligible for free or reduced-price lunch were more likely to use computers more frequently when computers are available in the classroom. With respect to relationships between computer access and …

Spatial Analysis Of Historic Cemeteries: Using High Spatial Resolution Imagery As A Visual Aid, Richard E. Brooks, Daniel Unger, I-Kuai Hung

Faculty Publications

Oak Grove Cemetery, located within the City of Nacogdoches in Nacogdoches County Texas, is one of the earliest cemeteries in the county dating to the early 1800’s. Several historic Texans are interred within this cemetery including Thomas J. Rusk and Charles S. Taylor who was the great-great-grandfather of current United States Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison. Due to a fire circa 1910 many of the records for the original section of the cemetery were lost. In the summer of 2006, the GPS coordinates of each grave marker within the cemetery were plotted on a backdrop of 6 inch spatial resolution multispectral …

The Emotional Dimensions Of Urban Teacher Change, Nate Mccaughtry, Jeffrey J. Martin, Pamela Hodges Kulinna, Donetta Cothran

Kinesiology, Health and Sport Studies

This study used an emotional geographies theoretical framework to analyze the emotional dimensions of urban teacher change. Fifteen urban physical education teachers involved in a comprehensive curriculum reform project were interviewed and observed multiple times across one school year. Data were analyzed using inductive analysis, and trustworthiness measures included triangulation, peer debriefing, researcher journals, and member checks. Teachers reported that emotional dimensions related to their urban students, colleagues, and status heavily influenced their engagement in the project. The discussion section maps the emotional dimensions of these teachers' change experiences onto an emotional geographies framework that situates their experiences in change …

Constraining Bubble Dynamics And Mixing With Dissolved Gases: Implications For Productivity Measurements By Oxygen Mass Balance, Roberta C. Hamme, Steven R. Emerson Jan 2006

Constraining Bubble Dynamics And Mixing With Dissolved Gases: Implications For Productivity Measurements By Oxygen Mass Balance, Roberta C. Hamme, Steven R. Emerson

Journal of Marine Research

We used a dynamic mixed layer model to determine carbon export by the oxygen mass balance method from a time series of O2/Ar, N2/Ar and Ne measurements collected at station ALOHA near Hawaii from July 2000 to June 2001. The inert gas measurements constrain the flux of oxygen into the mixed layer from small, collapsing bubbles (injection) to be greater than or equal to the flux from larger bubbles (exchange), with mean estimates of the ratio in the range of 1–2. We also show that monthly observations of temperature and inert gases cannot constrain the rate …

“River Of Life, Rapids Of Change”: Understanding Hiv Vulnerability Among Two-Spirit Youth Who Migrate To Toronto, Doris O'Brien Teengs, Robb Travers

Health Sciences Faculty Publications

Like most large urban centres in Canada, Toronto is a magnet for two-spirit youth who leave reserve communities and smaller cities and towns seeking safety and a sense of community. The Youth Migration Project was a community-based research project that was formed out of increasing community concern for these youth as well as other lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender young people. Despite increasing HIV incidence among two-spirit youth, little is understood about how their migration experiences might heighten their risk for HIV infection. We interviewed thirteen two-spirit youth to better understand how migrating to a large urban centre like Toronto …

Minimum Contacts In A Borderless World: Voice Over Internet Protocol And The Coming Implosion Of Personal Jurisdiction Theory, Danielle Keats Citron Jan 2006

Minimum Contacts In A Borderless World: Voice Over Internet Protocol And The Coming Implosion Of Personal Jurisdiction Theory, Danielle Keats Citron

Faculty Scholarship

Modern personal jurisdiction theory rests on the twin pillars of state sovereignty and due process. A nonresident’s “minimum contacts” with a forum state are treated as the equivalent of her territorial presence in the state and hence justify a state’s exercise of sovereignty over her. At the same time, the nonresident’s “purposeful availment” of opportunities within the state is seen as implying her agreement to that state’s jurisdiction in exchange for the protection of its laws. This theory presumes that a nonresident directs voice communications to known places by dialing a telephone number’s area code. Voice over Internet Protocol (“VoIP”) …

To Attain “The Just Rewards Of So Much Struggle”: Local-Resident Equity Participation In Urban Revitalization, Barbara L. Bezdek Jan 2006

To Attain “The Just Rewards Of So Much Struggle”: Local-Resident Equity Participation In Urban Revitalization, Barbara L. Bezdek

Faculty Scholarship

Annually, Americans pour out their sympathy for people displaced from their communities by natural disasters such as fires, floods, and hurricanes. We respond, knowing the anchor that the concept of “home” supplies to body, soul, and family; we intuit the toll exacted by the loss of familiar walls, private homes and community-shared places. Yet, redevelopment policy and practice in the U.S. today relies upon the massive relocation of poor people and the destruction of poor people’s neighborhoods with only token recognition of the costs and burdens imposed on the displaced. Although the devastation of community, family, and lives is just …

Ideas: The Music Of Democracy, Traci Cox

e-Vision Journal of Undergraduate Writing

What does "America the Beautiful" really stand for, anyway? What kind of message are we sending by being anti-American while we are actually residing in "the land of the free"? Truly, in this melting pot of a nation in which we are being constantly stirred, ideas are bound to boil to the surface.

Traci Cox is a sophomore English major and Anthropology minor. She currently contributes frequently as a staff writer to the op-ed section of The Breeze newspaper.

The Use Of Relationship Marketing In Developing Network And Co-Operative Links Within Tourism Product Marketing Groups (Pmg’S, Catherine Gorman

Books / Book chapters

Co-operative marketing groups are common in tourism, particularly in the case of destination marketing. Destination tourism marketing groups offer a diverse range of tourism products and experiences which complement each other and are delineated by a specific geographical parameter. Tourism product marketing groups offer similar tourism products or services and through a co-operative approach focus on an identified target markets. Co-operative marketing can make greater impact in terms of market presence and can be more cost effective. Members need to see the value in their membership in order to remain involved. Many tourism product providers are SMTE’s (Small and Medium …
