Civil Justice System And The Public: Learning From Experiences To Find Practices That Work, Barbara Billingsley, Diana Lowe, Mary Stratton

Canadian Forum on Civil Justice

The purpose of this report is to provide an overview of the Civil Justice System & the Public research project (the “CJSP”) undertaken by the Canadian Forum on Civil Justice and several research partners from 2001 to 2006. The CJSP was an ambitious and complex project, spanning several years and involving a multi-tracked, multi-party evaluation of communication practices in the already complex arena of Canada’s civil justice system. Designed as collaborative action research, this was not a static project: over the course of five years, the project objectives and research processes continuously evolved as the research produced new and better …

Bias In Severe Thunderstorm And Tornado Warnings Issued By The National Weather Service In The Doppler Radar Era: A Spatial-Temporal Evaluation, Gary S. Votaw May 2006

Bias In Severe Thunderstorm And Tornado Warnings Issued By The National Weather Service In The Doppler Radar Era: A Spatial-Temporal Evaluation, Gary S. Votaw

Theses and Dissertations

A climatology of severe thunderstorm (damaging wind and/or hail) and tornadoes in the United States has established the location of the areas of highest frequency of occurrence. This climatology was attained through analysis of a basic data source, that of observed events, which carries many associated biases. Among these biases is the requirement that someone be on hand to witness the event no matter what time of the day or night, the assumption that the observer had sufficient visibility to see the event clearly, and whether there was something available on location to damage. In this study I use an …

When Religion And Philosophy Meet : A Comparison Of The Theology Of The Unity School Of Christianity With The Classical Aristotelian Worldview, Jeffrey Michael Jackson May 2006

When Religion And Philosophy Meet : A Comparison Of The Theology Of The Unity School Of Christianity With The Classical Aristotelian Worldview, Jeffrey Michael Jackson

Master's Theses

The Unity School of Christianity's theology shares key characteristics with Aristotle's philosophical worldview, which have enabled it to meet the challenges of twentieth century America. Unity was founded in 1889 by Charles and Myrtle Fillmore in Kansas CIty, and has become a thriving religious movement in the United States and worldwide. A comparison of Unity's theology with Aristotle's philosophy finds that both share a pragmatic focus on physical life and its attributes instead of an afterlife; both accept the world as inherently good in nature; and both see underlying order and interconnection in the world. Both also see purpose in …

Women's Livelihood Strategies In Diverse Contexts: Constructing Feminist Topographies In Appalachia And South Africa, Amy Danielle Pratt May 2006

Women's Livelihood Strategies In Diverse Contexts: Constructing Feminist Topographies In Appalachia And South Africa, Amy Danielle Pratt

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This dissertation investigates the livelihoods of women heading households in rural parts of Appalachia and South Africa and develops a conceptual and methodological framework for transnational, comparative feminist research. Situated within a feminist geographical framework that is informed by feminist materialism and livelihoods analyses, it focuses on both historical and contemporary socioeconomic, cultural, and political forces at various scales of analysis that either enable or restrict women's ways of 'making due' in the two regions. The study focuses on five counties in northern West Virginia in the Appalachian region and Limpopo, including the former bantustan of Venda, in South Africa …

Bosnia And The Failure Of The New World Order, David Robbie May 2006

Bosnia And The Failure Of The New World Order, David Robbie

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

2 Abstract This paper attempts to prove that the United States failed to fulfill its international legislative obligations – namely the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide – in the conflicts that occurred in the disintegrating state of Yugoslavia during the early 1990s. By doing this, the paper also attempts to discredit the idea promulgated by the first Bush administration that following the Gulf War and the end of the Cold War in 1991 there had emerged a “New World Order” which would combat the dark side of human nature and ensure that human rights …

Mutual Knowledge And Its Impact On Virtual Team Performance, Alanah Davis, Deepak Khazanchi May 2006

Mutual Knowledge And Its Impact On Virtual Team Performance, Alanah Davis, Deepak Khazanchi

Information Systems and Quantitative Analysis Faculty Proceedings & Presentations

This paper describes the notion of mutual knowledge and its potential impact on virtual team performance. Based on a review of the literature, including proponents and opponents for the concept of mutual knowledge in group interaction, we suggest that there is a gap in our understanding of what is known about mutual knowledge as it impacts team dynamics and ultimately virtual team performance. We conclude the paper by discussing the importance of mutual knowledge for virtual team performance and the research issues that need to be addressed in this domain.

Acculturative Stress And Social Support Among Korean And Indian Immigrant Adolescents In The United States, Madhavappallil Thomas, Jong Baek Choi May 2006

Acculturative Stress And Social Support Among Korean And Indian Immigrant Adolescents In The United States, Madhavappallil Thomas, Jong Baek Choi

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

This study examined acculturative stress and its relationship with social support among Korean and Indian immigrant adolescents. The data were collected from 165 Korean and Indian adolescents using the Acculturation Scale for Asian American Adolescents and Social Support Scale. Findings show that respondents experience low to moderate level of acculturative stress. Social support activities reduce the level of acculturative stress. Social support from parents is the most important predictive factor in determining the level of acculturative stress. These findings not only contribute to social work education and practice but also increase cultural sensitivity and awareness in working with these populations.

“Part Of My Internal Landscape”: Religious Ideology As A Construction Of Place In Randall Kenan’S Let The Dead Bury Their Dead And Crystal Wilkinson’S Water Street, Frances Abbott May 2006

“Part Of My Internal Landscape”: Religious Ideology As A Construction Of Place In Randall Kenan’S Let The Dead Bury Their Dead And Crystal Wilkinson’S Water Street, Frances Abbott

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis explores the contributions of contemporary authors Randall Kenan and Crystal Wilkinson to the construction of place in the traditions of Southern literature and African-American literature. These two traditions have generally operated exclusively, and writers who create texts that speak to both black identity and Southern identity have often been cataloged as members of either one tradition or the other. While Kenan and Wilkinson speak to both traditions through many narrative devices, the creation of a religious landscape of the contemporary southern black community emerges as a significant commonality. Their depiction of spirituality in this context embraces two spheres …

So Close And So Small: Six Promising Approaches To Civic Education, Equity, And Social Justice, Debbie Abilock

Civic Engagement

Perhaps you feel, as I did when I worked in a school, that while teachers develop service projects with the best intentions, they make no effort to build on what is known about effective service learning, nor do they align their work with other service in the school. As a result, my school was full of feel-good, superficial activities and little curricular coherence.

Beginning Teachers And The Emotional Drama Of The Classroom, Sam M. Intrator May 2006

Beginning Teachers And The Emotional Drama Of The Classroom, Sam M. Intrator

Education and Child Study: Faculty Publications

As a teacher educator, the author believes that he must prepare teachers to go forth into schools with a deep understanding of the subjects they will teach, an appreciation for how students learn, and a repertoire of instructional strategies that will help them make learning come alive for their students. As they develop these skills, they must simultaneously work on resolving four inescapable challenges: First, they have to figure out what it means to be a novice. Second, although teaching is intellectually challenging, it is also chock full of emotional drama. How students negotiate the emotional terrain of teaching is …

Addressing The Medical Malpractice Insurance Crisis: Alternatives To Damage Caps, Carrie Lynn Vine May 2006

Addressing The Medical Malpractice Insurance Crisis: Alternatives To Damage Caps, Carrie Lynn Vine

Northern Illinois University Law Review

This article examines the history of damage caps as a means of tort reform and their effect on past medical malpractice crises. The article then proposes alternative solutions for future reform. Statistical evidence is presented demonstrating that damage caps are an ineffective means of reducing malpractice insurance premiums because they do not address the underlying causes of rising premiums. "Malpractice crises" correlate with market fluctuations and changes in the supply and demand of malpractice insurance, rather than with any increase in malpractice litigation or verdicts. In order to address the economic source of malpractice crises, the author proposes two alternative …

The Prevalence And Function Of Mathematics Specialists Across Southern New Jersey, Susan M. Eith May 2006

The Prevalence And Function Of Mathematics Specialists Across Southern New Jersey, Susan M. Eith

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this descriptive study was to examine current practices regarding math specialists in the eight southern counties of New Jersey. Additionally, information on training opportunities offered by several universities was presented and compared to the certification requirements of other states. A written survey was mailed to a proportional stratified random sample (n=45), categorized by county and socioeconomic status. Both simple percentages and tests of significance (t-test and chi-squared) were used in analyzing the data. This study found there were no significant differences in the number of math specialists working in economically disadvantaged districts compared to other, more affluent …

Australian Certificate Of Education : Exploring A Way Forward, Geoff Masters, Margaret Forster, Gabrielle Matters, Jim Tognolini

Assessment and Reporting

In May 2005 the Department of Education, Science and Training commissioned the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER) to investigate and report on models and implementation arrangements for an Australian Certificate of Education (ACE). In particular, ACER was asked to investigate four options for the introduction of a new certificate. The current investigation has reviewed existing curriculum, assessment and certification arrangements in the senior years of school in Australia; explored current issues in senior secondary education and examined state and territory responses to these issues; looked at some alternative certification arrangements internationally—including the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program; investigated the use …
