Understanding Eurasian Convergence: Application Of Kohonen Self-Organizing Maps, Joel I. Deichmann, Abdolreza Eshghi, Dominique Haughton, Selin Sayek, Nicholas Teebagy, Heikki Topi

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

Kohonen self-organizing maps (SOMs) are employed to examine economic and social convergence of Eurasian countries based on a set of twenty-eight socio-economic measures. A core of European Union states is identified that provides a benchmark against which convergence of post-socialist transition economies may be judged. The Central European Visegrád countries and Baltics show the greatest economic convergence to Western Europe, while other states form clusters that lag behind. Initial conditions on the social dimension can either facilitate or constrain economic convergence, as discovered in Central Europe vis-à-vis the Central Asian Republics. Disquiet in the convergence literature is resolved by providing …

Rethinking Ovid: A Collection Of Latin Poetry And Commentary On Composition, Anna C. Everett, Anna Everett Beek May 2006

Rethinking Ovid: A Collection Of Latin Poetry And Commentary On Composition, Anna C. Everett, Anna Everett Beek

Classical Mediterranean and Middle East Honors Projects

The ultimate result, and the central focus, of this paper is two poems written in Latin according to classical conventions of meter, language and style. The paper also describes the processes and difficulties of composing poetry in Latin and according to these standards. In re-setting two stories from Ovid, the author examines both the historical background and the literary interpretations of the stories. Strong emphasis is placed on feminine viewpoint, that is, how male poets of Greece and Rome imagined female characters and how the author, a female, differs in perspective from the male authors of a male-dominated world.

Mirror Of Culture: The Study Of A Nineteenth-Century Sewing Diary, Elizabeth M. Dellabadia May 2006

Mirror Of Culture: The Study Of A Nineteenth-Century Sewing Diary, Elizabeth M. Dellabadia

Senior Honors Projects

Hidden inside the library of the American Textile History Museum in Lowell, Massachusetts is wonderful resource for the study of late nineteenth-century America. When Ann Eliza Cunningham was middle aged, she compiled a sewing diary that included scraps of material from dresses she wore or China trade fabrics brought home by her father. Ann Eliza not only included assorted swatches; but she associated the fabrics with different events in her life. She includes swatches from dresses she wore on her wedding day in 1856, for Thanksgiving, and for various family celebrations like birthday parties. Similar to the work of a …

Culture, Rhetoric, And Reconciliation: The Place Of Language In The Northern Irish Conflict And Peace Process (1998-2002), Jennifer Dougherty May 2006

Culture, Rhetoric, And Reconciliation: The Place Of Language In The Northern Irish Conflict And Peace Process (1998-2002), Jennifer Dougherty

Peace and Conflict Studies

Alterations in public discourse towards multiculturalism, reconciliation and liberal democracy at the national level in Northern Ireland are evident from 1998 - 2002, but to what end? To what extent did language play a positive role in the Northern Ireland peace process? Recognizing that language does not tell the whole story of the Northern Irish experience of the Troubles or current peace process, the author highlights how language, as a transmitter and constitutor of culture, has played a role as a signifier of potential conflict, peace and progress (or lack thereof). In particular, the author considers several texts including excerpts …

Hydrolgeologic Groundwater Sensitivity And Vulnerability Mapping In South Central Kentucky, Andrea Croskrey May 2006

Hydrolgeologic Groundwater Sensitivity And Vulnerability Mapping In South Central Kentucky, Andrea Croskrey

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Groundwater sensitivity (Ray and O'dell 1993 a) refers to the inherent ease with which groundwater can be contaminated based on hydrogeologic characteristics. We have developed digital methods for identifying areas of varying groundwater sensitivity for a ten county area of south-central Kentucky relevant to a scale of 1: 24,000. The study area includes extensive limestone karst sinkhole plains, with groundwater that is generally extremely sensitive to contamination. Digitally Vectorized Geologic Quadrangles (DVGQs) were combined with elevation data to both identify hydrogeologic groundwater sensitivity regions and to identify zones of "high risk runoff where contaminants could be transported in runoff from …

Spatial Characteristics Of Paleochannels In Association With The Mississippian/Pennsylvanian Systematic Boundary In Western And South-Central Kentucky, Scott Schoefernacker May 2006

Spatial Characteristics Of Paleochannels In Association With The Mississippian/Pennsylvanian Systematic Boundary In Western And South-Central Kentucky, Scott Schoefernacker

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The basal Pennsylvanian Caseyville Formation of south-central Kentucky includes an extensive network of paleochannels, which unconformably overlie various Mississippian (Chesterian Series) rocks. Questions have been raised about the extent and orientation of paleochannels and the systemic boundary in the region. The problematical systemic boundary is quite significant in cases where marker beds are lacking or where sandstone facies of Pennsylvanian age are juxtaposed on lithologically similar Mississippian-age strata. Discerning the systemic boundary may also be complicated by facies changes in Chesterian strata. This study employs various data to investigate the Mississippian-Pennsylvanian systemic boundary such as well logs, outcrops, and subsurface-to-outcrop …

Geochemistry Of Benthic Foraminifera As An Environmental Indicator: A Study From Multiple Hydrographic Regimes, Chandranath Basak May 2006

Geochemistry Of Benthic Foraminifera As An Environmental Indicator: A Study From Multiple Hydrographic Regimes, Chandranath Basak

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The geochemistry (stable isotopes and Lracc clements) or living (sLaincd) calcareous benthic foraminifera was compared with ambient botlom water stable isotope values to provide modern analog conditions and calibrations for environmental and paleoenvironmental assessments. Stable isotope values of live (stained) bcnthic foraminifera were investigated from push core and multicorer samples from the North Pacific (on the Aleutian margin, water depth 1988m) and the South Australian Bight (water depth 2476m and 1634m). Living benthic foraminifera specimens collected from contaminated sites in the Venice Lagoon were analyzed for trace elements. Both the isotopic and the trace element study involved interpretation of modern …

People, Pixels, & Weights: Some Novel Applications Of Remote Sensing And Geographically Weighted Regression For Evansville, Indiana, Eric W. Lafary

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The exploration of urban-environmental changes and how those transformations co-vary with observed socio-economic realities is currently a major research initiative in geography. To that end, this thesis develops an urban-environmental assessment regime that examines how environmental change co-varies with observed socio-economic conditions. Research has demonstrated existing linkages between observed conditions in regard to socio-economic status (SES) and a particular greenness index, as represented by, normal difference vegetation index (NDVI). However, a gap within the literature has been identified concerning the current methodologies that propose to predict SES using remotely sensed data. Therefore, this thesis addresses this gap within the related …

Regional Institutions, Scalar Shifts, And Emerging Networks: The Spatial Practices And Transitional Politics Of Rural And Urban Community Colleges, Mike Rudibaugh May 2006

Regional Institutions, Scalar Shifts, And Emerging Networks: The Spatial Practices And Transitional Politics Of Rural And Urban Community Colleges, Mike Rudibaugh

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In recent years community colleges have faced both internal and external challenges in maintaining the college mission. Primarily these challenges connect with funding challenges and the evolving nature of community college funding patterns. This comparative case study assesses two community colleges in contrasting settings within the same state. These colleges were identified by their contrasting service areas that were primarily either rural or urban in nature. Institutional data with combined interview data served as the primary data sources for constructing narratives of how each college's rural or urban location impacts strategic planning processes. Previous research on economic development suggests that …

The Influence Of North Pacific Atmospheric Blocking On Colorado Lee Cyclogenesis, Diana S. Dickey May 2006

The Influence Of North Pacific Atmospheric Blocking On Colorado Lee Cyclogenesis, Diana S. Dickey

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

North Pacific atmospheric blocking is an upper tropospheric phenomenon that occurs modally in the northwestern quadrant of the North American cyclogenetic region primarily during the winter season. In this study, Colorado lee cyclones, which develop to the east of the Rocky Mountains, are investigated to see if differing strengths of North Pacific atmospheric blocking influences cyclone frequency, intensity and tracks during the study period 1965-1995. Three blocking categories, strong blocking, anti-blocking and weak-index blocking were created based on indices provided by previously published research. Additionally, an analysis of upper tropospheric circulation during strong blocking and anti-blocking winter seasons was made …

North American Trade Corridors: An Initial Exploration, Stephen Blank May 2006

North American Trade Corridors: An Initial Exploration, Stephen Blank

Faculty Working Papers and Articles

The North American economic system cannot be meaningfully visualized in terms of trade among three nations. A more accurate and useful map would focus on the elements of deep structural integration that distinguish the North American economy—on continental production, distribution and supply chain systems characteristic of many North American industries, on emerging cross-border regional development projects, and on "trade corridors" that link major transportation and production hubs. This paper examines the North American trade corridor phenomenon. The great increase in the volume of materials moving north and south has generated competition among businesses, cities, and municipalities to build channels for …

Where Transit Use Is Growing: Surprising Results, Gregory L. Thompson, Jeffrey R. Brown, Rupa Sharma, Samuel Scheib May 2006

Where Transit Use Is Growing: Surprising Results, Gregory L. Thompson, Jeffrey R. Brown, Rupa Sharma, Samuel Scheib

Journal of Public Transportation

This article investigates whether transit’s fate is tied to the last vestiges of old urban forms or whether transit is finding niches in the new, largely suburban urban forms that increasingly have manifested themselves since the 1920s. The hypothesis is that most growth is in census regions with the strongest vestiges of older urban forms centered on CBDs. The hypothesis was tested by documenting how transit performance changed between 1990 and 2000 in U.S. metropolitan areas with more than 500,000 people in the year 2000. Results show that, for MSAs with fewer than 5 million people, transit use has been …
