A Rationale For Special Education In Catholic Schools, Thomas J. Long, Merylann J. Schuttloffel Jun 2006

A Rationale For Special Education In Catholic Schools, Thomas J. Long, Merylann J. Schuttloffel

Journal of Catholic Education

Debates about inclusive education for students with special needs challenge Catholic educators to develop a rationale consistent with Catholic theology and Church teaching. Guided by the rationale, arguments are made for the role Catholic schools, seminaries, and Catholic higher education should contribute to realize an inclusive Church. Contemplative practice offers a process for engaging Catholic identity with school practitioner decision making for implementing inclusion. This article posits that the rationale for Catholic special education reflects an authentic understanding of Catholic identity within Catholic learning communities.

Can Resilience Be Reconciled With Globalization And The Increasingly Complex Conditions Of Resource Degradation In Asian Coastal Regions?, Derek Armitage, Derek Johnson Jun 2006

Can Resilience Be Reconciled With Globalization And The Increasingly Complex Conditions Of Resource Degradation In Asian Coastal Regions?, Derek Armitage, Derek Johnson

Geography and Environmental Studies Faculty Publications

This paper explores the relationship between resilience and globalization. We are concerned, most importantly, with whether resilience is a suitable conceptual framework for natural resource management in the context of the rapid changes and disruptions that globalization causes in social-ecological systems. Although theoretical in scope, we ground this analysis using our experiences in two Asian coastal areas: Junagadh District in Gujarat State, India and Banawa Selatan, in Central Sulawesi, Indonesia. We present the histories of resource exploitation in the two areas, and we attempt to combine a resilience perspective with close attention to the impact of globalization. Our efforts serve …

Science For Place-Based Socioecological Management: Lessons From The Maya Forest (Chiapas And Petén), David Manuel-Navarrete, D. Scott Slocombe, Bruce Mitchell

Geography and Environmental Studies Faculty Publications

The role humans should play in conservation is a pervasive issue of debate in environmental thinking. Two long-established poles of this debate can be identified on a preservation-sustainable use continuum. At one extreme are use bans and natural science-based, top-down management for preservation. At the other extreme is community-based, multidisciplinary management for sustainable resource use and livelihoods. In this paper, we discuss and illustrate how these two strategies have competed and conflicted in conservation initiatives in the Maya forest (MF) of the Middle Usumacinta River watershed (Guatemala and Mexico). We further argue that both extremes have produced unconvincing results in …

Legislative Delegation And Two Conceptions Of The Legislative Power, Robert C. Sarvis Jun 2006

Legislative Delegation And Two Conceptions Of The Legislative Power, Robert C. Sarvis

The University of New Hampshire Law Review

[Excerpt] "The current federal government, with its burgeoning administrative agencies, does not embody what most Americans would recognize as the constitutional doctrine of separation of powers. This is, in part, due to the Congress’s frequent practice of delegating legislative powers to the executive branch, i.e., giving administrative agencies the power to promulgate rules regulating private behavior and having the force of law. Legislative delegation has been the subject of academic, legal, and political wrangling since the early congresses and clearly calls into question whether modern practice adheres to constitutional norms. This article discusses legislative delegation in terms of some core …

What Happened On Deliberation Day?, Cass R. Sunstein, David Schkade, Reid Hastie Jun 2006

What Happened On Deliberation Day?, Cass R. Sunstein, David Schkade, Reid Hastie

Coase-Sandor Institute for Law & Economics Research Paper Series

What are the effects of deliberation about political issues? This essay reports the results of a kind of Deliberation Day, involving sixty-three citizens in Colorado. Groups from Boulder, a predominantly liberal city, met and discussed global warming, affirmative action, and civil unions for same-sex couples; groups from Colorado Springs, a predominately conservative city, met to discuss the same issues. The major effect of deliberation was to make group members more extreme than they were when they started to talk. Liberals became more liberal on all three issues; conservatives became more conservative. As a result, the division between the citizens of …

Nabokov And World Literature, Charles Stanley Ross Jun 2006

Nabokov And World Literature, Charles Stanley Ross

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In his paper "Nabokov and World Literature" Charles Stanley Ross thinks through the relationship between comparative literature and cultural studies by considering the absence of Nabokov's work in The Norton Anthology of World Literature. The problem seems to be that Nabokov's works are not susceptible to the kind of varying interpretations favored by the Norton's editors, although in practice, Azar Nafisi's Reading Lolita in Tehran, for example, shows that even Nabokov's tightly controlled fiction can generate diverse responses. The more complex modes of reading that form the basis of David Damrosch's What is World Literature? are used to interrogate just …

The Photo Essay: A Visual Research Method For Educating Obstetricians And Other Health Care Professionals, Gwendolyn P. Quinn, Terrance L. Albrecht, Charles Mahan, Bethany A. Bell-Ellison, Tabia Henry Akintobi, Beth Reynolds, Delores Jeffers Jun 2006

The Photo Essay: A Visual Research Method For Educating Obstetricians And Other Health Care Professionals, Gwendolyn P. Quinn, Terrance L. Albrecht, Charles Mahan, Bethany A. Bell-Ellison, Tabia Henry Akintobi, Beth Reynolds, Delores Jeffers

The Qualitative Report

When it comes to issues related to low-income women seeking early, adequate, or continuous prenatal ca re, the public health and medical communities continue to tell women to take responsibility for their actions. Rarely are messages aimed at providers. To help physicians see how factors in their offices and clinics can affect service utilization, the photo essay, a visual qualitative research strategy was developed using low- income minority and disenfranchised women who had recently given birth or were near to giving birth. Eight photo essays were completed. Together, the narratives, in collaboration with the photos, provided an opportunity for physicians …

A Compact Blimp Remote Sensing System For Analysis Of Environmental Change, Joann Sullivan Jun 2006

A Compact Blimp Remote Sensing System For Analysis Of Environmental Change, Joann Sullivan

Student Work

The goal of this research is to demonstrate that developing an inexpensive compact blimp remote sensing system will allow for analysis and change detection of environmental characteristics over a small area. This system has scale and temporal advantages over existing aircraft and space platforms. The blimp remote sensing platform is capable of temporal resolutions of hours or days, while generating low cost, high spatial resolution images. This contrasts with satellite and fixed wing aircraft systems that are costly to purchase and operate, have low temporal resolutions, and may not provide adequate spatial resolution to investigate small scale phenomena. As designed, …

The Private Provision Of Public Goods: Terrorism Protection In The Critical Infrastructure Industries, James K. Hayes Jun 2006

The Private Provision Of Public Goods: Terrorism Protection In The Critical Infrastructure Industries, James K. Hayes

Student Scholarship

My research interest is to understand the business plan for industries to invest in security against terrorism, if and why this investment is likely to be less than socially optimal and what government's role is in promoting the appropriate level of investment in security in a free market economy. I believe that an industry's ability to pay for such protection is an important factor but have also relied heavily on the economic literature regarding the theoretical circumstances in which a private actor will willingly contribute to the provision of a public good. Unfortunately, the literature is ambiguous in its prediction …

The Role Of Cognitive Biases And Framing In Strategic Decision-Making Processes Regarding Socially Responsible Actions, Jonathan Coleman Jun 2006

The Role Of Cognitive Biases And Framing In Strategic Decision-Making Processes Regarding Socially Responsible Actions, Jonathan Coleman

Student Scholarship

This paper is intended to provide a conceptual framework about the importance of cognitive biases and framing in the strategic decisionmaking (SDM) processes used by corporations when addressing socially responsible actions. Through crises, regulation, activism and attempts to gain competitive advantage, companies are facing a dynamic environment requiring increased incorporation of social actions into corporate strategy. However, the nebulous nature of social actions and the inertia of bureaucracies have led to inefficient implementation of those actions. The conceptual framework developed in this paper sheds light on SDM processes involving corporate social responsibility (CSR), and lays a foundation for research in …

A Tragedy Of Failures And False Expectations Report On The Events Surrounding The ThreeMonth SitIn And Forced Removal Of Sudanese Refugees In Cairo, September–December 2005, Fateh Azzam, Maisaa Youssef, Andrew Woods, Nora Danielson, Themba Lewis, Laura Maxwell, James Pearce, Sarah Sedak

Faculty Journal Articles

On September 29, 2005, dozens of Sudanese asylum seekers and refugees initiated a sitin near the offices of the United Nations High Commission for Refugees in Cairo to protest UNHCR’s ongoing suspension of refugee status determination procedures as well as their conditions in Cairo, a situation they considered unbearable. Their number quickly grew to an average of 1,800 to 2,500 and remained at those levels throughout the following three months. Periodic meetings and negotiations among the sitin leadership, UNHCR, and a number of other parties failed to meet the demonstrators’ demands or to result in a satisfactory end to the …

Contextualising The Research Process: Using Interviewer Notes In The Secondary Analysis Of Qualitative Data, John Goodwin, Henrietta O'Connor Jun 2006

Contextualising The Research Process: Using Interviewer Notes In The Secondary Analysis Of Qualitative Data, John Goodwin, Henrietta O'Connor

The Qualitative Report

In this paper we argue that for the secondary analysis of qualitative data to be effective, researchers need to subject any accompanying interviewer notes to the secondary analysis process. The secondary analysis of interviewer notes can provide important insight into the research process and the attitudes, experiences, and expectations of those collecting the data. Such information is essential if meaningful analyses are to be offered. Using interviewer notes from a little known research project on youth transitions form the 1960s, this paper explores how the interviewers’ experiences of the research process and their perceptions are documented in the interviewer notes.

The Effect Of Temperature And Humidity On The Bionomics Of Six African Egg Parasitoids (Hymenoptera: Trichogrammatidae), A. Kalyebi, W. A. Overholt, F. Schulthess, J. M. Mueke, S. Sithanantham Jun 2006

The Effect Of Temperature And Humidity On The Bionomics Of Six African Egg Parasitoids (Hymenoptera: Trichogrammatidae), A. Kalyebi, W. A. Overholt, F. Schulthess, J. M. Mueke, S. Sithanantham

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

The life table statistics of six native Kenyan species/strains of Trichogramma and Trichogrammatoidea were established using a factitious host Corcyra cephalonica, Stainton (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae), at eight different temperatures (10, 15, 20, 25, 28, 30, 32 and 35°C) and two humidity levels (40-50 and 70-80%). The objective was to select insects with superior attributes for augmentative release against lepidopteran pests in horticultural crops. Both temperature and humidity affected developmental time and life table parameters of the parasitoids but temperature played a more critical role. Developmental time was inversely related to temperature. The intrinsic and finite rates of increase increased with temperature …

Mediators Without Borders: How Technology Is Leading The Charge To Globalised Dispute Resolution, Nadja Alexander Jun 2006

Mediators Without Borders: How Technology Is Leading The Charge To Globalised Dispute Resolution, Nadja Alexander

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

Mediation has made it to Hollywood. The opening scene of the romantic comedy The Wedding Crashers (2005) features a hilarious attempt at divorce mediation. The mediation scene does not demonstrate any mediation skills to be emulated and the film itself, apart from the opening scene, has nothing to do with mediation. Nevertheless one cannot ignore the power of the borderless dream machine called Hollywood. The Hollywood film industry does more than export films and fantasies around the world; it is a driving force in the globalisation of the themes with which it deals. When mediation becomes one of those themes …

A Spatial Analysis Of The Xiii Italian Legislature, Massimiliano Landi, Riccardo Pelizzo Jun 2006

A Spatial Analysis Of The Xiii Italian Legislature, Massimiliano Landi, Riccardo Pelizzo

Research Collection School Of Economics

We present a spatial map of the Italian House of Deputies during the XIII Legislature obtained by applying the Poole and Rosenthal methodology to roll call data. We estimate coordinates for almost all the 650 Deputies that were on the House’s floor at the time, and we aggregate them according to parties. We find that voting patters generate basically a two dimensional political space. The first dimension represents loyalty to either the ruling coalition or the opposing one. The second dimension is represented by the European Union. These findings are consistent with the exceptional case of the party Northern League, …

Environmental Policy In Jordan : Analysis, Gap Identification, And Strategies For Improvement, Diana Saed May 2006

Environmental Policy In Jordan : Analysis, Gap Identification, And Strategies For Improvement, Diana Saed

Theses

Jordan is a country with a tremendously fragile environment. It faces substantial environmental challenges due to its delicate environmental resources and its limited financial assets. These challenges are aggravated by the scarcity of available water, deterioration of the water resources, land contamination, desertification, mismanagement of land use, and air pollution. Attempting to describe the “State of the Environment” and to provide an informed analysis of the threats to the nation’s environment is a Herculean task. This analysis examines the efforts made by Jordan in regard to protection and management of the environment. This thesis provides a snapshot of the major …

Habitat And Humanity: Public Lands Law In The Age Of Ecology, Jamison E. Colburn May 2006

Habitat And Humanity: Public Lands Law In The Age Of Ecology, Jamison E. Colburn

ExpressO

Public lands law in this country has been gridlocked for a decade at the intersection of democracy and ecology. The public is still led to believe that the “conservation” versus “preservation” of our discrete, bounded parcels of public land is the central political issues and that what must happen for one set of values or another to triumph is that one or another faction capture those lands parcel-by-parcel and put them under its preferred legal regime. Experts and activists have transitioned from this philosophy to the open-textured, inclusive notions of “ecosystem” and “adaptive” management on which everyone agrees in the …

Development Of Models For Understanding Causal Relationships Among Activity And Travel Variables, Xin Ye May 2006

Development Of Models For Understanding Causal Relationships Among Activity And Travel Variables, Xin Ye

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Understanding joint and causal relationships among multiple endogenous variables has been of much interest to researchers in the field of activity and travel behavior modeling. Structural equation models have been widely developed for modeling and analyzing the causal relationships among travel time, activity duration, car ownership, trip frequency and activity frequency. In the model, travel time and activity duration are treated as continuous variables, while car ownership, trip frequency and activity frequency as ordered discrete variables. However, many endogenous variables of interest in travel behavior are not continuous or ordered discrete but unordered discrete in nature, such as mode choice, …

After The Party, Is There A Cure For The Hangover? The Challenges Of The Global Economy To Westphalian Sovereignty, Jackson N. Maogoto, Andrew Coleman May 2006

After The Party, Is There A Cure For The Hangover? The Challenges Of The Global Economy To Westphalian Sovereignty, Jackson N. Maogoto, Andrew Coleman

ExpressO

Nation-States and their authority referred to here as national sovereignty is under threat from forces within the global economy. Although globalisation is considered to be a recent phenomenon that has now attracted the attention of writers, its origins lie with those of the nation-state as the nation-state clawed its way to dominate the international community. Nation-states achieved their pre-eminence and dominance of the international community on the backs of free enterprise and capitalism; and now this dependence threatens their very existence. Now belatedly nation-states are attempting to regulate the global economy through the IMF and the World Bank and other …
