Assessing The Accuracy Of The Modis Lai 1-Km Product In Southeastern United States Loblolly Pine Plantations: Accounting For Measurement Variance From Ground To Satellite, John Shepherd Iiames Jr. Jan 2006

Assessing The Accuracy Of The Modis Lai 1-Km Product In Southeastern United States Loblolly Pine Plantations: Accounting For Measurement Variance From Ground To Satellite, John Shepherd Iiames Jr.

Doctoral Dissertations

Leaf area index (LAI), defined here as one-half of the total leaf area per unit ground surface area (Chen, 1996), has been estimated at a global scale from spectral data processed from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) sensor aboard two NASA EOS-AM spacecraft, Terra (launched in 1999) and Aqua (launched in 2002). The MOD15A2 LAI product is a 1 km global data product composited over an 8-day period and is derived from a three-dimensional radiative transfer model driven by an atmosphere corrected surface reflectance product (MOD09), a land cover product (MOD12) and ancillary information on surface characteristics. The United …

Gonadal Histology And Reproductive Steroidogenesis Of Anurans Exposed To Potential Endocrine Disrupting Contaminants, Emily May La Fiandra Jan 2006

Gonadal Histology And Reproductive Steroidogenesis Of Anurans Exposed To Potential Endocrine Disrupting Contaminants, Emily May La Fiandra

Doctoral Dissertations

The prevalence of malformed amphibians and the association of high incidences of malformation with the presence of environmental contaminants have raised questions about the effects of environmental contaminants on the development of larval amphibians. The potential endocrine disrupting effects of pesticides suggest that the reproductive and developmental abnormalities observed in larval anurans may be due at least in part to impacts on the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis. The present studies investigate the effects of exposure to environmental contaminants including DDT and atrazine on the development, gonadal histology and reproductive steroidogenesis of larval anurans.

As previous monitoring at Great Bay National Wildlife Refuge …

Ecological Patterns, Community Classification, And A Comparison Of Approaches For Predicting Biological And Habitat Reference Conditions In New Hampshire Streams, Brian R. Frappier Jan 2006

Ecological Patterns, Community Classification, And A Comparison Of Approaches For Predicting Biological And Habitat Reference Conditions In New Hampshire Streams, Brian R. Frappier

Doctoral Dissertations

Reference conditions play a vital role in many challenges facing both conservation and natural resources management. This dissertation sought to establish minimally-impacted reference conditions for stream biota and habitat in New Hampshire and explore alternative statistical methodologies to predict reference conditions for biological and habitat assessments. The fish, stream-dwelling salamander, macroinvertebrate and periphyton assemblages as well as the co-occurring physical habitat and riparian conditions of 76 minimally-impacted first to fourth order streams in New Hampshire were estimated using USEPA Environmental Monitoring and Assessment Program protocols over a four year period. Several statistical approaches and data standardizations for classifying multi-taxonomic assemblages …

Improving Estimation Of Gross Primary Productivity Of Terrestrial Ecosystems, Qingyuan Zhang Jan 2006

Improving Estimation Of Gross Primary Productivity Of Terrestrial Ecosystems, Qingyuan Zhang

Doctoral Dissertations

The MOderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) provides an unprecedented opportunity to monitor and quantify seasonal changes of vegetation and phenology. MODIS has the potential to improve the estimation, which is based on the algorithms for the NOAA Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR), of biophysical/biochemical variables of vegetation. My doctoral study improves estimation of gross primary productivity (GPP) through two aspects: first, my study improved the detection of vegetation phenology by distinguishing MODIS contaminated observations and contamination-free observations, and secondly, I inverted the fraction of absorbed photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) by chlorophyll using radiative transfer models and daily MODIS data. …

Recent Extreme Events In A Tropical Stalagmite: Multi-Proxy Records And Analysis Of Ecosystem Delta Carbon-13 Value Sensitivity To Weak Climate Forcing, Amy E Benoit Frappier Jan 2006

Recent Extreme Events In A Tropical Stalagmite: Multi-Proxy Records And Analysis Of Ecosystem Delta Carbon-13 Value Sensitivity To Weak Climate Forcing, Amy E Benoit Frappier

Doctoral Dissertations

Speleothems are emerging as important and detailed chronological records of environmental change. Integrating exploration of modern speleothem records of environmental variability, related forcing factors, and understanding and suggests new potential proxies. This dissertation demonstrates the potential for developing novel proxy records of past regional environmental extremes, such as tropical cyclones, explosive volcanism, and enhanced seasonal contrasts from speleothems that are sensitive to transient infiltration events through very high-resolution, multi-parameter analysis of a rapidly growing, fracture-fed tropical stalagmite. A series of sample screening steps were developed prior to stalagmite collection in the field in order to increase the likelihood of collecting …

Honors programs are rare in Latin America, and in Chile they were unknown before 2003. At the Universidad Austral de Chile, an interdisciplinary group of scholars linked to environmental studies put forward a pilot project for implementing a new experience in higher education. Challenged by an educational environment where (i) apathy and mediocrity have taken over the classrooms, (ii) monodisciplinary training rules the university campus, and (iii) authoritarian teaching persists, this has been an experiment in new ways of approaching the classroom. Stimulated by experiences in the USA, a project proposal was written, finding support in the Chilean Ministry of …

Creating Conservation, Megan Selby Jan 2006

Creating Conservation, Megan Selby

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2003 - 2009

Once seen as entertainment organizations, many American zoos now strongly promote themselves as agencies of biodiversity conservation, a reorientation prompted in part by growing public concern about endangered species. Funding, research, conservation efforts, and captive breeding programs are the concrete tools that allow zoos to lay claim to their contributions, but it is their more subtle cues that leave a lasting impression with zoo visitors. The exhibits, layout, signage, and presentations reflect prevailing attitudes about nature, wildlife, exotic species, and shape ideas about how animals live their lives and what they are like in the wild. This project examines tensions …

Introduction To The Abacoa Greenway, Carmen. Blubaugh Jan 2006

Introduction To The Abacoa Greenway, Carmen. Blubaugh

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2003 - 2009

Greenways are corridors of relatively intact natural vegetation through otherwise disturbed habitat that typically connect larger protected natural areas. The establishment of greenway systems throughout the United States is a testament to the increasing recognition of the necessity to incorporate wild areas within urban and other disturbed landscapes for the sake of biological sustainability and the emotional welfare of human residents. In my thesis, I examine a local greenway in Jupiter, Florida, the Abacoa Greenway, which is both product and component of the greenway movement, a recent and revolutionary phenomenon in urban planning. I evaluate the greenway's ecology, the specific …

Commodification And Militarization Of American Public Space, Timothy. Case Jan 2006

Commodification And Militarization Of American Public Space, Timothy. Case

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2003 - 2009

The history of public space in America is consistent with a pattern of privatization, rationalization, and individual escapism. From the frontier to the regulatory bureaucracy and into suburbanization and New Urbanism, we have and are witnessing the steady decline of vibrant, critical, and democratic public spheres and their replacement with a corporate and media controlled space that reflects the commodification and militarization of American culture at the hands of these corporate elites. After tracing a genealogy of the public and public space, this thesis will focus on two examples of New Urbanist design that illustrate the corporate nature of community …

Vranizan, Gregory M. M.S. Autumn 2006 Environmental Studies RHETORIC AND THE RESTORATION LANDSCAPE: FOREST RESTORATION IN ENVIRONMENTAL DEBATE Committee Chairperson: Phil Condon Forest restoration on federal land has become the focus of an ongoing public debate in the West. Interest groups on various sides have engaged in a rhetorical contest to define restoration in ways that accord with their own ideas about the use and management of the nation’s public lands. This study examines the positions taken by different groups and considers the rhetorical claims they make. Disputes over meanings and practices have thus far limited the chances for a …

Protecting The Integrity Of Organic Food In The Face Of Genetic Engineering: The Case Of Roundup Ready Alfalfa, Kristina Joy Hubbard Jan 2006

Protecting The Integrity Of Organic Food In The Face Of Genetic Engineering: The Case Of Roundup Ready Alfalfa, Kristina Joy Hubbard

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Genetically engineered (GE) seeds are central to the debates around agricultural biotechnology, and continue to be rapidly adopted across the globe. At the same time that GE crops increase in acreage, the organic market has become one of the fastest growing sectors of the American food industry. While biotechnology companies claim there is a successful “coexistence” of GE crop technologies and organic crops, many organic producers are already challenged by keeping unwanted GE traits out of their fields. Still, little attention has been given to the role of regulations in the face of organic contamination by genetically engineered material. This …

A Land Link For Western Montana: Keeping Land In Agriculture From One Generation To The Next, Paul Fuller Hubbard Jan 2006

A Land Link For Western Montana: Keeping Land In Agriculture From One Generation To The Next, Paul Fuller Hubbard

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Western Montana’s agricultural land is rapidly being developed in the wake of an increasing population and aging farmers and ranchers. The subsequent high land values make it difficult for producers to access agricultural land. The Community Food and Agriculture Coalition has prioritized the creation of a land link matching service to help connect farm and ranch owners with people looking for agricultural land to expand or start production operations. This professional paper aims to provide the first step towards this objective by exploring how a matching service might be designed, administered and implemented. The research has two components: 1) to …

Incorporating Remote Sensing Information In Modeling House Values: A Regression Tree Approach, Danlin Yu, Changshan Wu

Department of Earth and Environmental Studies Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

This paper explores the possibility of incorporating remote sensing information in modeling house values in the City of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, U.S.A. In particular, a Landsat ETM+ image was utilized to derive environmental characteristics, including the fractions of vegetation, impervious surface, and soil, with a linear spectral mixture analysis approach. These environmental characteristics, together with house structural attributes, were integrated to house value models. Two modeling techniques, a global OLS regression and a regression tree approach, were employed to build the relationship between house values and house structural and environmental characteristics. Analysis of results indicates that environmental characteristics generated from remote …
