Spatial Analysis Of Colby College Trails: Perkins Arboretum And Runnals Hill, Jacqueline Rolleri ('05) Apr 2006

Spatial Analysis Of Colby College Trails: Perkins Arboretum And Runnals Hill, Jacqueline Rolleri ('05)

Atlas of Maine

I created an updated map of trails at Colby College using global positioning system data that were then edited in ArcGIS. The map background, obtained from the Maine Office of GIS, was created from digital orthophotographs produced from aerial photos collected over southwest Maine in Spring 2003. Trail difficulty was determined by creating a slope layer and taking other factors into consideration such as ground surface and path width. The map will eventually be available online, enabling interactive selection of trails where users can access additional trail information.

A Spatial Analysis Of Impervious Surfaces At Colby College In 1965 And 2006, Katherine Renwick ('07) Apr 2006

A Spatial Analysis Of Impervious Surfaces At Colby College In 1965 And 2006, Katherine Renwick ('07)

Atlas of Maine

Roads, parking lots, buildings, and other impervious surfaces do not allow rainwater to infiltrate the ground. As a result, they can lead to an increase in runoff to nearby ditches and streams, as well as a greater influx of pollutants such as motor oil that can often be found on paved surfaces. For this project, GIS was used to find the total area covered by impervious surfaces on the Colby campus, and to show how this area has grown in the past 40 years. It was found that new development on the campus has lead to a 56% increase in …

Estimating The Impact Of Catastrophic Sea Level Rise In Maine, Randa Capponi ('06), Gregory Lashoto ('07 J), Sharon Mcmonagle ('06), Christopher Russoniello ('06) Apr 2006

Estimating The Impact Of Catastrophic Sea Level Rise In Maine, Randa Capponi ('06), Gregory Lashoto ('07 J), Sharon Mcmonagle ('06), Christopher Russoniello ('06)

Atlas of Maine

Maine's 3,500 miles of coastline is the longest coastline in the continental US. The goal of our study was to use GIS to estimate the impact future global sea level rise could potentially have on our state. We show the area of coastline and some of the economic and social impacts that would result from a rise of one meter and six meters. We used roads to estimate the impact on infrastructure and public building, including schools, libraries, hospitals, police and fire stations, as a measure of social impact. A sea level rise of six meters would result in a …

Conservation Land And Human Presence Surrounding Roseate Tern, Lest Tern And Piping Plover Nest Sites In Maine, Rachel Terry ('07 J)

Atlas of Maine

A map showing the nest site locations of three endangered species of shore bird in the state of Maine as they relate to human presence and conservation efforts. Least terns, roseate terns, and piping plovers are highly effected by human presence in their nesting areas. This map indicates where roads and boat launches bring people into the fragile nesting and brooding sites of these birds.

Feasibility Of The Reintroduction Of Wolves In Maine: A Gis Study, Caitlin Cleaver ('06), Liza Mitchell ('08), Caroline Polgar ('06), Samuel Weeks ('06) Apr 2006

Feasibility Of The Reintroduction Of Wolves In Maine: A Gis Study, Caitlin Cleaver ('06), Liza Mitchell ('08), Caroline Polgar ('06), Samuel Weeks ('06)

Atlas of Maine

The eastern timber wolf (Canis lupus lycaon) once inhabited Maine, as well as the rest of the eastern United States and southern Canada. As a result of human land use and widespread extermination campaigns, wolf numbers dramatically decreased, and by the early twentieth century, no wolves remained in Maine. As large carnivorous and territorial mammals, wolves require contiguous undeveloped areas with abundant prey. This project is a feasibility study that identifies the areas in Maine that are suitable for the reintroduction of wolves. We used GIS modeling to identify contiguous forested areas over 1,000 km2, calculate road and population density, …

Developing A Model For Pedestrian Route Selection At Colby, Alexander Mcpherson ('07) Apr 2006

Developing A Model For Pedestrian Route Selection At Colby, Alexander Mcpherson ('07)

Atlas of Maine

Millions of unconscious calculations are made daily by pedestrians walking through the Colby College campus. I used ArcGIS to make a predictive spatial model that chose paths similar to those that are actually used by people on a regular basis. To make a viable model of how most travelers choose their way, I considered both the distance required and the type of traveling surface. I used an iterative process to develop a scheme for weighting travel costs which resulted in accurate least-cost paths to be predicted by ArcMap. The accuracy was confirmed when the calculated routes were compared to satellite …

Solar Panel Modeling On Suitable Roofs At Colby, Sarah Kelly ('06), Scott Shahverdian ('06)

Atlas of Maine

With the recent construction of Colby Green and the current plans for the construction of several new buildings, the total area for future development on campus has declined. The goal of this study was to illustrate existing campus development and to determine where future growth could occur. GIS was used in determining the different soil systems on campus, the current use of the land, and the boundaries of the Colby property. The project shows what potential obstacles the college will have in attempting to expand the campus and proposes where the best options are for construction.

Breathing Easier About Air Quality, Joel Schwartz Apr 2006

Breathing Easier About Air Quality, Joel Schwartz

Center for Applied Economics

Most people associate air pollution with automobiles and factories. But air pollution has been a part of human existence for thousands of years, and accounts of noxious urban air go back to ancient times. The Roman statesman Seneca bemoaned, “the stink, soot, and heavy air” of Rome in 61 AD.1 London has suffered from air pollution since the Middle Ages, when coal became a common fuel in smithies and lime burners. The problem was bad enough that King Edward I in 1285 created a commission to improve the city’s air quality.2

Today, despite vast increases in energy production, motorized transportation, …

Testing Hypotheses On Simulated Data: Why Traditional Hypotheses-Testing Statistics Are Not Always Adequate For Simulated Data, And How To Modify Them, Richard Aló, Vladik Kreinovich, Scott A. Starks Apr 2006

Testing Hypotheses On Simulated Data: Why Traditional Hypotheses-Testing Statistics Are Not Always Adequate For Simulated Data, And How To Modify Them, Richard Aló, Vladik Kreinovich, Scott A. Starks

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

To check whether a new algorithm is better, researchers use traditional statistical techniques for hypotheses testing. In particular, when the results are inconclusive, they run more and more simulations (n2>n1, n3>n2, ..., nm) until the results become conclusive. In this paper, we point out that these results may be misleading. Indeed, in the traditional approach, we select a statistic and then choose a threshold for which the probability of this statistic "accidentally" exceeding this threshold is smaller than, say, 1%. It is very easy to run additional simulations with ever-larger n. The probability of error is still 1% …

Rocks In Gettysburg College History, Harold J. Stevens Apr 2006

Rocks In Gettysburg College History, Harold J. Stevens

Hidden in Plain Sight Projects

The glittering stones fill the cases in the lower lobby of the science center. Each one is has a tag saying where it was collected and what kind of rock formation it is. The cases themselves add to the feeling of being in a museum. Each rock is in pristine order and in good condition, very professional. While it is still not the most noticed of all collections on campus (located as it is on the bottom floor of the Science Center), it is still more obvious than it was just a few years ago. The rock collection is actually …

Fast Computation Of Centroids For Constant-Width Interval-Valued Fuzzy Sets, Jerry M. Mendel, Hongwei Wu, Vladik Kreinovich, Gang Xiang Apr 2006

Fast Computation Of Centroids For Constant-Width Interval-Valued Fuzzy Sets, Jerry M. Mendel, Hongwei Wu, Vladik Kreinovich, Gang Xiang

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

Interval-valued fuzzy sets provide a more adequate description of uncertainty than traditional fuzzy sets; it is therefore important to use interval-valued fuzzy sets in applications. One of the main applications of fuzzy sets is fuzzy control, and one of the most computationally intensive part of fuzzy control is defuzzification. Since a transition to interval-valued fuzzy sets usually increases the amount of computations, it is vitally important to design faster algorithms for the corresponding defuzzification. In this paper, we provide such an algorithm for a practically important case of constant-width interval-valued fuzzy sets

A Study On The Cytological Effects Of Myrobalan (Fruit Of Terminalia Chebula) In Allium Tests, H. S. Rathore Et Al.

Ethnobotanical Leaflets

The present study was aimed to find the cytogenetic effects of myrobalan using Allium cepa as a model system. The onion bulbs were grown in the suspension of myrobalan in tap water at various concentrations (0.01, 0.10, 1.0, 10.0 and 30 mg/ml) for 96 hours. The mean root length, the colour of growing roots as well as the mitotic index and chromosomal aberrations were observed in the presence of myrolaban, in order to assess the cytological effects of myrobalan. The colour of growing roots was not affected at 0.01 and 0.1 mg/ml myrobalan concentrations, while it appeared pale at 1 …
