Soil Microbial Communities From The Alimentary Canal Of The Earthworm Lumbricus Terrestris (Oligochaeta: Lumbricidae), Joshua A. Chapman
Soil Microbial Communities From The Alimentary Canal Of The Earthworm Lumbricus Terrestris (Oligochaeta: Lumbricidae), Joshua A. Chapman
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The effect of earthworm (Lumbricus terrestris) activity on microbial community composition was investigated in a silt loam soil. Fingerprints were constructed using PCR amplicons of bacterial 16S rDNA separated by denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis. Analysis of similarity established that significant differences existed between community fingerprints. Differences were explored using non-metric multidimensional scaling (MDS) and unweighted pair-group method with arithmetic mean (UPGMA). Microbial communities of earthworm casts separated from soil treatments for both CD DGGE and CI DGGE profiles. Cast communities were determined by the worm's food source. Soils with earthworms and manure separated from all other soil treatments. Major trends …

The Brightening Light On The Journey Of Lehi And Sariah, Daniel B. Mckinlay
The Brightening Light On The Journey Of Lehi And Sariah, Daniel B. Mckinlay
Journal of Book of Mormon Studies
Until now, nearly all commentaries on the Book of Mormon have focused mainly on issues of doctrine rather than beginning with the text itself. Royal Skousen’s critical text project does the opposite by treating the text itself on the word and phrase level. Skousen weighs nearly all possible evidence to deduce the events that may have led to the variations seen in the texts and to draw conclusions about which readings are most likely original. Some conclusions may surprise readers, but Skousen is more interested in candidly documenting what the texts reveal than in interpreting all the implications. Several lengthy …

Birds Along Lehi's Trail, Stephen L. Carr
Journal of Book of Mormon Studies
Royal Skousen’s work on his Book of Mormon critical text project demonstrates that he is an able textual critic who employs sound judgment and proven methods to uncover the original text of the Book of Mormon. In many cases, these decisions seem counterintuitive to untrained readers, but Skousen correctly applies the principle that a more awkward reading is most likely original. He also shows his ability to make conjectural emendations for which no direct textual evidence is available. In every case, Skousen clearly lays out his reasoning so that readers who disagree with his inferences can examine the evidence for …
Sediment Characteristics And Hydrodynamic Setting Of Reef Platform Sediments Of Kunduchi, North Of Dar Es Salaam Harbour, Y. W. Shaghude, N. Nyandwi, A. N. N. Muzuka, A. M. A. M. Dubi, O. U. Mwaipopo
Sediment Characteristics And Hydrodynamic Setting Of Reef Platform Sediments Of Kunduchi, North Of Dar Es Salaam Harbour, Y. W. Shaghude, N. Nyandwi, A. N. N. Muzuka, A. M. A. M. Dubi, O. U. Mwaipopo
Tanzania Journal of Science
Sediment grain size distribution, carbonate content and current velocities for the Kunduchi area are used to determine its hydrodynamic setting and sediment characteristics. The sediment mean grain size generally decreases northward. The sediments consist of medium to coarse sand south of the Tegeta River and fine sand further north. The sediment sorting values, which lack a north-south trend, vary from moderately well sorted to poorly sorted. The skewness of the sediment vary from near-symmetrical to very negatively skewed while the peakedness (kurtosis) varies from platykurtic to leptokurtic. The carbonate content increases with distance offshore, whereas the siliciclastic component decreases with …

Long-Term Abundance Of Breeding Songbirds During Restoration Of Northern Mixed-Grass Prairie, Robert Murphy, Karen Smith
Long-Term Abundance Of Breeding Songbirds During Restoration Of Northern Mixed-Grass Prairie, Robert Murphy, Karen Smith
United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications
There are no published, long-term accounts of responses of grassland passerine birds to the restoration of northern mixed-grass prairie through combined use of fire and grazing. During 1979-2001, we assessed abundance of passerine birds (9 grassland species and 1 shrub-associate species) on 2 brush-invaded, mixed-grass prairie tracts at Lostwood National Wildlife Refuge in northwestern North Dakota. Each tract encompassed 90 ha (220 ac) that were being restored through 4 prescribed fires then 3 consecutive years of grazing by cattle. Fires were separated by 2-4 years of rest (i.e., nondisturbance) and grazing was initiated 2 years after the last fire. Among …
Sustainable Policy Design Through Integrated Basin Models: Findings From The Rio Grande, Frank A. Ward Et Al.
Sustainable Policy Design Through Integrated Basin Models: Findings From The Rio Grande, Frank A. Ward Et Al.
2006
In the Rio Grande Basin, water is over-appropriated, and demands for water grow while supplies are constrained by drought and climate change. The Basin is currently in its seventh year of drought, and reservoirs are at historically low levels. Agricultural and municipal river diversions have been sharply curtailed; low flows threaten endangered species. A central policy challenge is the design and implementation of plans that allocate the Basin's water supplies efficiently, fairly, and sustainably. Such plans are complicated by the demands of existing water users, potential new users, three state governments, and two sovereign nations. These challenges are addressed by …

An Awakened Sense Of Place: Thoreauvian Patterns In Willa Cather's Fiction, Breanne Grover
An Awakened Sense Of Place: Thoreauvian Patterns In Willa Cather's Fiction, Breanne Grover
Theses and Dissertations
The recent "greening" of Willa Cather Scholarship has initiated new conversations about Cather's use of and dependence on landscape in her fiction. Scholars have frequently noted Cather's reliance on landscape imagery, but this thesis suggests parallels between Cather's and Henry David Thoreau's use of awakening imagery and examines how such parallels work in Cather's environmental discussion of wilderness and environmental communities. There is little direct evidence linking the development of Cather to Thoreau, although their similar use of awakening imagery suggests they comment on similar environmental discussions through their writing, indicating that Cather deserves further attention as a nature writer. …

The Use Of Inductive And Deductive Reasoning To Model Snowmelt Runoff From Northern Mountain Catchments, P. F. Dornes, J. W. Pomeroy, A. Pietroniro, S. K. Careyc, W. L. Quinton
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
Reliable hydrological modeling at small to medium scales is very difficult. At these scale, models require incorporation of both detailed process understanding and inputs along with information gained from observations of basin-wide streamflow phenomenon; essentially a combination of deductive and inductive approaches. At Granger Creek, part of the Wolf Creek Research Basin in the mountains of the Yukon Territory, Canada, sparse and shrub tundra cover the basin and soils are frozen at the time of snowmelt. Wind redistributes snow to north facing slopes and shrub tundra areas, while spring melt rates are much higher on south facing slopes due to …

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
Current uncertainty in quantifying the global carbon budget remains a major contributing source of uncertainty in reliably projecting future climate change. Furthermore, quantifying the global carbon budget and characterizing uncertainties have emerged as critical to a successful implementation of United National Framework Convention on Climate Change and its Kyoto Protocol. Beyond fundamental quantification, attribution of the processes responsible for the so-called ‘residual terrestrial uptake’ is important to the carbon cycle communities’ ability to simulated the future response of the terrestrial biosphere to climate change and intentional sequestration activities. This paper’s objective is to describe the efforts of the workshop participants …

Spatial Estimations Of Air Pollution In Street Canyons By Lidar Measurements, L. Matejicek, Jana Konradova
Spatial Estimations Of Air Pollution In Street Canyons By Lidar Measurements, L. Matejicek, Jana Konradova
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
Air pollution of urban areas can be explored by direct monitoring, mathematical modeling and physical simulation in the wind tunnels. Complex analysis requires using of all mentioned approaches together. To integrate the data inputs and outputs, which include spatio-temporal interactions, the Geographic Information System (GIS) is used for database management and spatial analysis. The geodatabase is primarily developed to support spatial interpolations of LIDAR measurements in the street canyons. The LIDAR measurements provide the information about the distribution of pollutants in the points along the beam trajectories. As the examples, the sets of NO2 spatial measurements are performed in the …

On-Line Climate Model Simulation Of The Global Carbon Cycle And Verification Using The In Situ Observation Data, K. Mabuchi, H. Kida
On-Line Climate Model Simulation Of The Global Carbon Cycle And Verification Using The In Situ Observation Data, K. Mabuchi, H. Kida
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
Using a global climate model that includes a new land surface ecosystem model, a numerical simulation under conditions of the actual vegetation was performed. The values of atmospheric carbon dioxide concentration calculated by the model were verified using the in situ observation data. Concerning the seasonal cycle patterns in the Northern Hemisphere, the model could successfully reproduce the features of the seasonal cycle patterns of the observed data. Also in the equatorial zone and in the low latitudinal zone in the Southern Hemisphere, the model could generally reproduce the features of the seasonal cycles of the observed data. In the …
Air Pollution In Japan: The Inverted U-Shaped Relation, T. Fukiharu
Air Pollution In Japan: The Inverted U-Shaped Relation, T. Fukiharu
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
In 1995 Grossman and Krueger, utilizing the data collected worldwide, discovered the invertedU-shaped relation between the per-capita GDP and air pollution level. It may be explained that the relationholds in each country. To explain the inverted U-shaped relation, however, an alternative explanation is alsopossible: although for each country's cross-sectional data the positive correlation holds between the percapitaGDP and pollution level, the worldwide data may exhibit the inverted U-shape. The worldwide resultmight be regarded as the one of time-series data, in which each country's preference relation towardsenvironment is different depending on the stage of economic growth. First, it is shown by …
Review Of Dripping Dry: Literature, Politics, And Water In The Desert Southwest, By David N. Cassuto, Cory Shaman
Review Of Dripping Dry: Literature, Politics, And Water In The Desert Southwest, By David N. Cassuto, Cory Shaman
Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture
[First paragraph]
Concentrating primarily on the environmental history of the last 100 years in the American Southwest, David N. Cassuto examines what he suggests is the nexus of political dispute regarding water in the region: the intractable tension between the ideologies of reclamation and restoration. After an initial chapter on John Wesley Powell and the 19th century origins of the hydraulic West, the book proceeds with an exploration of four representative texts in order to demonstrate what Cassuto has identified as the successive stages of the reclamation movement: "At the beginning of the twentieth century, Mary Austin believed in spite …

Ten Iterative Steps In Development And Evaluation Of Environmental Models, A. J. Jakeman, R. A. Letcher, J. P. Norton
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
Models are increasingly being relied upon to inform and support natural resource management. They are incorporating an ever broader range of disciplines and now often confront people without strong quantitative or model-building backgrounds. These trends imply a need for wider awareness of what constitutes good model-development practice, including reporting of models to users and sceptical review of models by users. To this end the paper outlines ten basic steps of good, disciplined model practice. The aim is to develop purposeful, credible models from data and prior knowledge, in consort with end-users, with every stage open to critical review and revision. …

Predicting Impacts Of Water Management In Coastal Zones By Hydraulic And Salinity Modeling, C. T. Hoanh, N. D. Phong, J. W. Gowing, T. P. Tuong, N. X. Hien, N. D. Dat
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
Tidal effects and salinity intrusion are two defining characteristics of coastal zones. The firstcauses complex variations of water level and unsteady flows in the river and canal network. The second is aconstraint to agriculture and freshwater fishery, but provides suitable conditions for brackish wateraquaculture. These phenomena bring about conflicts in the development of agriculture, fishery andaquaculture due to different requirements of water quality. Hydraulic and salinity modeling have beendeveloped and applied to simulate tidal propagation and salinity intrusion, and to analyze the effects of watermanagement on hydrological and salinity conditions that control land use in the coastal zones. This paperpresents …
