Perceptions Of Crime, Fear Of Crime, And Defensible Space In Fort Worth Neighborhoods, Bonnie R. Grohe Dec 2006

Perceptions Of Crime, Fear Of Crime, And Defensible Space In Fort Worth Neighborhoods, Bonnie R. Grohe

Public Affairs Dissertations - Archive

This research used descriptive, written scenarios to test the perceptions of crime, fear of crime, and defensible space of residents in three Fort Worth, Texas, neighborhood associations. The survey instrument included two different measures of fear of crime: 1) fear of crime in hypothetical scenarios, and 2) fear of crime in resident's own neighborhoods to examine whether residents who were fearful in their own neighborhood also reported high levels of fear in hypothetical neighbor¬hoods. The instrument also tested whether residents perceived certain neighborhoods as defensible and if residents recognized what crime prevention scholars defined as "safe" environments. The multiple regression …

Arribot- An Enabler For Studying Mobile Wireless Sensor Networks, Jaymala Suresh Ghadigaonkar Dec 2006

Arribot- An Enabler For Studying Mobile Wireless Sensor Networks, Jaymala Suresh Ghadigaonkar

Electrical Engineering Theses - Archive

The objective of this thesis is to structure a mobile wireless sensor network using low cost, custom made robotic platforms. Over the years, several projects have proved that the performance of a static wireless sensor network (WSN) is greatly enhanced by using mobile WSN for applications like adaptive exploration or in search and rescue missions where the network topology changes with changes in the environment. A low cost, mobile wireless sensor node known as the ARRI BOT has been designed to contribute along with other robotic platforms in structuring an ingenious mobile wireless sensor network (MSWN). The ARRI BOT has …

Physical Layer And Application Layer Issues Of Wireless Sensor Networks, Lingming Wang

Electrical Engineering Dissertations - Archive

The potential for collaborative, robust networks of wireless sensors has attracted a great deal of research attention. For the most part, this is due to the compelling applications that wireless sensor networks will enable. Location sensing, environmental observation and surveillance, medical monitoring and a lot other applications are all gaining interest. However, wireless sensor network poses a large number of challenges. Among all, one of the most important challenges is design sensor networks that have long network lifetime, which will become especially difficult due to the energy-constrained nature of the sensor nodes. In this thesis, we focus on physical and …

Immigration And Editorial Page Policy: A Case Study Of The Dallas Morning News, Anthony Ellis Hartzel Dec 2006

Immigration And Editorial Page Policy: A Case Study Of The Dallas Morning News, Anthony Ellis Hartzel

Public Affairs Theses - Archive

Newspaper editorial pages play a crucial role in democratic society, serving as forums for informed debate. On major issues such as immigration, many factors are at play when members of an editorial board sit down together to shape the institutional voice of their newspaper. Using the explanatory case study method, the author directly observes editorial board deliberations at the Dallas Morning News, and sheds light on the influences that affect those writers and editors before the paper publishes its formal positions. The thesis finds that many influences exist beyond news judgment. Those influences range from intra-group dynamics and corporate management, …

Legitimate Strategies In Writing : Exploring Esol Learner Perspectives On Attribution, Danielle Elaine Plauche Dec 2006

Legitimate Strategies In Writing : Exploring Esol Learner Perspectives On Attribution, Danielle Elaine Plauche

Linguistics & TESOL Theses - Archive

In many academic institutions today, ESOL (English as a Second or Other Language) writers may incorporate background sources into their writing in ways unrecognized by their academic institutions, which could lead to these learners' academic success or failure. In recent years, researchers and teachers alike have sought to understand the ways ESOL writers understand and avoid plagiarism in many academic institutions. Yet there is little research which explores the perspectives of ESOL writers regarding strategies that are used to attribute authorship. The following study explores the strategies that eight ESOL writers in four different pre-academic proficiency levels use to attribute …

Synthesis And Characterization Of Multifunctional Oxides For Force And Gas Sensors, Vaneet Sharma

Material Science and Engineering Theses - Archive

In this research work, the piezoresistivity phenomena in multifunctional oxides of La0.8Sr0.2MnO3 (LSMO) and composites of LSMO - (Ce0.12Zr0.88)O2 has been investigated for force and gas sensor applications in harsh environments including automobile and aerospace industry. In these applications, there is a need of material with high mechanical strength with multi sensing capabilities. The inherent sensing capabilities allow the material to be implemented at variety of platforms. Previously, LSMO polycrystalline ceramics have been studied as a cathode material in solid oxide fuel cells (SOFC). Owing to its colossal magnetoresistance properties, this material has also been extensively studied for use in …

Plans As Products Of Learning, Samin Karim, Budhitama Subagdja, Liz Sonenberg Dec 2006

Plans As Products Of Learning, Samin Karim, Budhitama Subagdja, Liz Sonenberg

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

This paper presents motivations and current related work in the field of plan learning. Additionally, two approaches that achieve plan learning are presented. The two presented approaches are centred on the BDI framework of agency and have particular focus on plans, which, alongside goals, are the means to fulfil intentions in most pragmatic and theoretical realisations of the BDI framework. The first approach is a hybrid architecture that combines a BDI plan extractor and executor with a generic low-level learner. The second approach uses hypotheses to suggest incremental refinements of a priori plans. Both approaches achieve plan generation that is …

The Iraq Paradox: Minority And Group Rights In A Viable Constitution, Makau Mutua

Buffalo Law Review

On October 15, 2005 an Iraq ravaged by a civil war spawned by the 2003 American invasion and subsequent occupation voted to decide the fate of a permanent constitution for the country. Although many Sunni Arabs took part in the vote, the referendum lost in the three governorates where they form a majority. But the constitution was approved because opponents only succeeded in recording "no" votes larger than two-thirds in only two of Iraq's eighteen provinces, in effect one province short of a veto. A two-thirds rejection in three provinces would have doomed the charter and the transition to a …

Mycorrhizae Concentration And Fitness Of Canopy Orchids In The Cloud Forest Of Monteverde, Costa Rica, December 2006, You-Young Clover Lee Dec 2006

Mycorrhizae Concentration And Fitness Of Canopy Orchids In The Cloud Forest Of Monteverde, Costa Rica, December 2006, You-Young Clover Lee

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

Orchids require the presence of mycorrhizal fungi in their root systems to germinate, but the importance of fungi after germination is the focus of this investigation. The purpose of this study was to examine whether increasing the coverage of mycorrhizal fungi increases overall fitness and productivity of individual orchids. Orchids of two species Masdevalia chasei and Trichosalpinx memor were collected from cloud forest tree canopies and their fitness and infection levels were estimated. The fitness of each individual was measured here as number of leaves, number of inflorescences, length of longest leaf, length of longest stem. The percent coverage of …

Territorial Response Of Rufous-And-White Wrens (Thryothorus Rufalbus) To Neighbor/Stranger Conspecific Playbacks, December 2006, Kaitlin Dunn Dec 2006

Territorial Response Of Rufous-And-White Wrens (Thryothorus Rufalbus) To Neighbor/Stranger Conspecific Playbacks, December 2006, Kaitlin Dunn

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

I tested the Rufous-and-white Wren (T. rufalbus) for discrimination between the songs of neighbor and stranger conspecifics. I found significant differences in behavioral responses between the song playbacks of neighboring and unfamiliar conspecifics in seventeen pairs of the Rufous-and-white Wren. Birds sang for longer periods and sang more songs in response to playbacks of strangers. However, the amount that they approached the playback source did not differ between the song types. These results suggest that Rufous-and-white wrens recognize the songs of neighbors and identify the individuals as less threatening than strangers. This diminished response may be an adaptive strategy to …
