The Future Of Student Grouping Systems In Science 14-16., Stephen Rowcliffe Jan 2006

The Future Of Student Grouping Systems In Science 14-16., Stephen Rowcliffe

School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences

Ability grouping is a contentious issue in high school science education, and one that divides teachers, parents, and policymakers alike. However, it may be that current grouping systems are founded on ideasthat are failing to provide for the best interests of students at any ability level. This article aims to reviewcurrent practice and its effects on student and teacher outcomes, and suggest a new direction for studentgrouping polices based on the ideal of “science for all” through curriculum reform and choice-basedmodular course systems. The article is based largely on the British education system.

Can We Teach Emotional Intelligence?, Kelly B.T. Chang Jan 2006

Can We Teach Emotional Intelligence?, Kelly B.T. Chang

Faculty Publications - Psychology Department

Although there are hundreds of programs in thousands of schools that claim to enhance some aspect of emotional intelligence (EI), research has yet to show that it can in fact be enhanced. This study used proven behavioral self-modification techniques in semester-long Psychology of Adjustment courses to help undergraduate college students improve their EI. Students used the techniques in their own self-change projects, choosing EI topics such as assertiveness, empathy, self-regard, and emotion management. The course also included instruction on EI, as well as on theory and strategies from rational emotive therapy. Students in the treatment group (n=79) and control group …

How Strong Collaboration Between Legal And Social Service Professionals Will Improve Outcomes For Trafficking Survivors And The Anti-Trafficking Movement, Heather C. Moore Jan 2006

How Strong Collaboration Between Legal And Social Service Professionals Will Improve Outcomes For Trafficking Survivors And The Anti-Trafficking Movement, Heather C. Moore

Intercultural Human Rights Law Review

This article will discuss and demonstrate how attorneys can protect and yield better legal outcomes for their clients by collaborating with social service professionals specifically, and by reconsidering their own roles in serving trafficking survivors--not only as legal advocates, but as informal mental health advocates. This article also presents one model of comprehensive service delivery, that of the Coalition to Abolish Slavery ("CAST"), in which legal and social services complement and support each other within one agency to better serve clients.

Assessing Human Trafficking In Canada: Flawed Strategies And The Rhetoric Of Human Rights, Constance Macintosh Jan 2006

Assessing Human Trafficking In Canada: Flawed Strategies And The Rhetoric Of Human Rights, Constance Macintosh

Intercultural Human Rights Law Review

This paper will present the argument that Canada's rhetoric of protecting the human rights of trafficking victims is at odds with its practice. Trafficking victims are treated essentially the same as any other irregular migrant, and the specter of trafficking is invoked to justify acts which arguably violate Canada's international human rights obligations. This paper will offer an overview of what little information is available regarding the extent of trafficking in Canada, and then will conduct a close examination of the Canadian approach to trafficking and its victims. In addition to considering the logic and consequences of the Canadian strategy …

Barriers And Facilitators To Prenatal Care For Pregnant Latina Women In Cobb County, Georgia, Carol Holtz, Annette Bairan

Faculty Articles

This research study seeks to identify factors that serve as barriers and/or facilitators to prenatal care for Latina women and to provide data to assist health care providers, health care agencies, and policy makers in developing programs that maximize access to prenatal care for Latina women. In addition, other groups may also find this data useful, such as scholars in Latin American studies, immigration, cultural diversity, minority health care, and health care in general. The research questions consist of the following: (1) What do indigent pregnant (or recently delivered) Latina women believe about prenatal care? (2) What are the barriers …

Lord Mansfield; Judicial Integrity Or Its Lack; Somerset's Case, Alan Watson Jan 2006

Lord Mansfield; Judicial Integrity Or Its Lack; Somerset's Case, Alan Watson

Scholarly Works

I write this after re-reading Steven M Wise's Though the Heavens May Fall. My argument, if convincing, undermines the basis of the book. Probably the most famous decision in English law is that of Lord Mansfield in Somerset v. Stewart in 1772. It is very short and very dramatic; indeed, it is so rhetorical that much of what is vital is overlooked -- as it was meant to be. Somerset was Stewart's slave in Virginia and was brought to England by his owner. Somerset travelled extensively in the service of his master, to Bristol and Edinburgh, for example. But two …

Acl And God’S Call To Librarianship, Barbara Nelson Jan 2006

Acl And God’S Call To Librarianship, Barbara Nelson

The Christian Librarian

Many people have asked me how, as a librarian in a secular institution, I became so involved in ACL. I have been at Auburn University Libraries since 1978, but before that was at a Christian liberal arts college, now defunct. ACL has been part of my life since the early 70’s and, of all the professional organizations to which I have belonged, it is the one that has had the greatest effect on me personally.

The Christian Periodical Index, Acl’S Longest Service Project, Barbara Nelson

The Christian Librarian

When the Christian Librarians’ Fellowship (CLF) was first formed in 1956, those early librarians were not just focused on their own needs, but they were also concerned with the information needs of students at Christian institutions. Part of their earliest vision was the establishment of the Christian Periodical Index (CPI).And so began a project which continues to the present day. It has far exceeded anyone’s vision at the time if its creation. Who knew about the coming explosion of publishing – to say nothing about the Internet! Yet the mission of CPI – to provide access to English language articles …

View From Clc, Elizabeth Werner

The Christian Librarian

During its first 50 years, ACL has offered its members many opportunities for professional growth, support, and resource sharing. The Christian Library Consortium (CLC) has served ACL libraries for the most recent 15 of these years. The purposes of the CLC “shall be to promote sharing of resources between institutional members, to provide other benefits (when possible), and to help sponsor the activities of the association by paying dues.”1 Woodvall Moore first presented the concept for the Christian Library Consortium (CLC) during a meeting of the Association’s Liberal Arts College Section at the 1988 conference.

Building Connections Between First-Year Students And The Academic Library, Betsy Barefoot Edd Jan 2006

Building Connections Between First-Year Students And The Academic Library, Betsy Barefoot Edd

The Christian Librarian

It is an honor to be with you here on this lovely campus. This is not my first trip to Indiana Wesleyan. I have many friends here and recently worked closely with Indiana Wesleyan’s faculty and staff in a major yearlong self-study and improvement planning process for the first year. I very much appreciate the invitation extended to me by Sheila Carlblom to reflect with you about your important role in Christian college settings and how what you do – helping students become knowledgeable and ethical seekers and consumers of information – is so important. In my remarks this morning, …

Cut-And-Paste Plagiarism: Teaching Student Researchers Boundaries, Tami Echavarria Robinson Jan 2006

Cut-And-Paste Plagiarism: Teaching Student Researchers Boundaries, Tami Echavarria Robinson

The Christian Librarian

Librarians affiliated with educational institutions, as members of an academic community, participate in teaching students and future scholars how they share in the responsibility of upholding ethical standards of scholarship and values of academic honesty. Academic honesty, in its variant forms, was part of issues in education long before the introduction of computers. Two forms, plagiarism and copyright infringement, were chronic problems in the print realm and present additional dimensions in today’s electronic environment. The causes of copyright infringement and plagiarism are extensive and complex. Divergent positions are represented in the literature on how to deal with these issues. They are …

Between Humanity And Divinity: Christ Consciousness In Jacques Maritain's On The Grace And Humanity Of Jesus And The Epistemology Of Michael Polanyi, Stephen Doering Jan 2006

Between Humanity And Divinity: Christ Consciousness In Jacques Maritain's On The Grace And Humanity Of Jesus And The Epistemology Of Michael Polanyi, Stephen Doering

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This work investigates the consciousness of Christ in Maritain's On the Grace and Humanity of Jesus in light of his theory of consciousness in Poetic Intuition in Art and Poetry. At issue is the epistemological question of non-thematic, non-explicit knowledge bearing upon the conscious awareness of Jesus. Michael Polanyi's contribution is his theory of tacit knowledge. In utilizing Polanyi we are able to substantiate Maritain's belief that non-thematic knowledge does, nonetheless, bear upon our explicit conscious awareness. The final chapter brings these points together by investigating Jesus' knowledge and consciousness of himself and his divine status.

Stewardship And The Concept Of Yield In Landscape Water Conservation, Larry A. Rupp, Roger Kjelgren Jan 2006

Stewardship And The Concept Of Yield In Landscape Water Conservation, Larry A. Rupp, Roger Kjelgren

Plants, Soils, and Climate Faculty Publications

Growing up in what was rural Salt Lake County, my peers and I never knew a time when questions of water did not flow through our lives as surely as it flowed through the canals and irrigation ditches. We played in the flood of water pumped from the ditch onto our lawn, and we floated homemade rafts down the canal in the heat of the summer. We listened in amazement to descriptions of how the canals were built and wondered when we would be big enough to be asked to join the cooperative crew that skimmed the ditches in the …

Hail, No: Changing The Chief Justice, Edward T. Swaine Jan 2006

Hail, No: Changing The Chief Justice, Edward T. Swaine

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

How do we get a new chief justice? Traditionally, the President decides between nominating a newcomer and promoting a sitting associate justice, and places either nominee before the Senate for its advice and consent. But this is not constitutionally required, or at least not evidently so, and there is no better time to confront this fact. This short essay explains that Congress could develop a different mechanism for promoting justices without subjecting them to a second appointment - providing, for example, that the position would rotate among sitting justices based on seniority, or that the justices would elect a chief …

The Meaning Of Health Among Midlife Russian-Speaking Women In The United States, Lenore Resick Jan 2006

The Meaning Of Health Among Midlife Russian-Speaking Women In The United States, Lenore Resick

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study sought to explore the meaning of health among midlife Russian-speaking women from the Former Soviet Union. A hermeneutic, phenomenologic, descriptive and interpretive design following the Utrecht School was used. The setting was in an ethnic community in Southwestern Pennsylvania. The sample included 12 Russian-speaking women who also spoke English, ages 40-61, who migrated after 1991 to the United States. Methods included hermeneutic phenomenology, which combined descriptive and interpretive phenomenology, and content analysis of verbatim transcriptions of open-ended individual interviews. Six major themes were identified: health as a highly valued possession; being a stranger/seeking the familiar; grieving and loss/building …

Being Touched By Music: A Phenomenological-Hermeneutical Approach To Understanding Tranformational Musical Experience, Kurt Kumler Jan 2006

Being Touched By Music: A Phenomenological-Hermeneutical Approach To Understanding Tranformational Musical Experience, Kurt Kumler

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation investigated the lived experience of being personally transformed by listening to music. The investigation started with an exploration of the literature that relates to the phenomenon of musical transformation, including natural-scientific research as well as ideas from musicology, ethnomusicology, psychology, literature, and philosophy. This research was designed to access the nuanced and subjective aspects of the phenomenon by attending to the experience as lived by the experiencer. The method was qualitative in nature, based on a phenomenological-hermeneutical methodology. Throughout the research process, the researcher maintained a reflexive stance, attending to assumptions and preconceptions held about the phenomenon. This …

The New Religious Prisons And Their Retributivist Commitments, Marc O. Degirolami Jan 2006

The New Religious Prisons And Their Retributivist Commitments, Marc O. Degirolami

Scholarly Articles

This essay explores the criminological commitments of religious prisons. Though religious prisons serve rehabilitative aims, this essay emphasizes the importance of their retributive goals-what Professor R.A. Duff has termed the censure-communicating purpose of punishment and the "Three 'R's of Punishment" (repentance, reform, and reconciliation)9-in justifying the use of religious programming in prisons. The focus of this article is narrow: it offers an argument in response to skeptics who claim that religious programming serves no criminological purpose absent an unequivocal showing of rehabilitative effectiveness. It claims that even if the evidence of reduced recidivism has been inflated or manipulated, as many …
