Collaboration: Paradigm Of The Digital Cultural Content Environment, Anne Cuyler Salsich Jan 2006

Collaboration: Paradigm Of The Digital Cultural Content Environment, Anne Cuyler Salsich

Works by Oberlin College Libraries Staff

Government grant-funding agencies have spawned an explosion of images from historical collections on the Internet. They have encouraged collaborative projects in which institutions share resources for capital-intensive digitization projects. These Web ‘exhibits’ are neither publications nor exhibits in the traditional sense, most often without identified authors, curators, designers, or sources. Reviews in journal literature are one mechanism for accountability, but not all humanities journals offer exhibit reviews. In those that do, the space allocated in history and archival studies journals reveals the relative importance they place on peer review of these exhibits, compared with that for book reviews. The type …

Students' Perceptions Of Mentoring In A University Cooperative Education Program, Matthew M. Fifolt Jan 2006

Students' Perceptions Of Mentoring In A University Cooperative Education Program, Matthew M. Fifolt

All ETDs from UAB

The purpose of this study was to examine students’ perceptions of mentoring in a university cooperative education (co-op) program. Within this setting, students report to a supervisor. This supervisor has direct responsibility for the student and may influence the quality of the co-op experience by providing a mentoring role. A need existed to examine the interactions between students and supervisors during this transitional phase between school and work. Results from this study could be used as a source of information for enhancing student-supervisor interactions in co-op and for increasing awareness of the role mentoring may play in shaping the co-op …

Model-Driven Integration Of Software And Service Components, Wei Zhao Jan 2006

Model-Driven Integration Of Software And Service Components, Wei Zhao

All ETDs from UAB

Building applications by composing pre-developed components has much prom-ise for reuse and software engineering industrialization. Expressing integration require-ments in a model and its supporting tools not only elevates the abstraction of the devel-opment and automates reoccurring low-level integration code, but also leverages the inte-gration tools for various supporting functionality such as analysis, transformation, simu-lation, optimization, and monitoring. This dissertation addresses integration of compo-nents using two model-driven approaches. 1. There is an ongoing demand and trend of exposing software applications as IT services and utilities. We first discuss a model-driven approach to integration of service components. The integration requirements are depicted …

Chinese Law On Sars By Chenglin Liu (Book Review), Vincent R. Johnson Jan 2006

Chinese Law On Sars By Chenglin Liu (Book Review), Vincent R. Johnson

Faculty Articles

Chinese Law on SARS, by Chenglin Liu, is a marvelous example of fresh scholarship about a new and important feature of the Chinese legal system. The book analyzes the Chinese response to the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (“SARS”) epidemic in 2003. Most notably, it examines the government’s passing of two new laws and the implementation of other legal steps to bolster the nation’s public health system.

Liu’s scholarly examination of the SARS legislation is instructive, not merely because it explains the current laws in China relating to SARS, but also because it offers insight into what a country should (and …

Life In The Early Days Of Lawyer Advertising: Personal Recollections Of A Bates Baby, Gerald S. Reamey Jan 2006

Life In The Early Days Of Lawyer Advertising: Personal Recollections Of A Bates Baby, Gerald S. Reamey

Faculty Articles

The Supreme Court decision in Bates v. State Bar of Arizona ruled that lawyer advertising is commercial speech subject to First Amendment protection. However, a Texas disciplinary statute provided that “a lawyer shall not publicize himself, his partner, or associate…through newspaper or magazine advertisements, radio or television announcements…or other means of commercial publicity.” Despite being clearly unconstitutional, the Texas statute remained law for five years. Finally, responding to Bates in September 1977, the Texas State Bar Board of Directors adopted an official statement which allowed for limited advertising in newspapers, and only to the extent which was provided for by …
