Effect Of South Caroline Belt Law On Safety Belt Use, Sourabh Patki
Effect Of South Caroline Belt Law On Safety Belt Use, Sourabh Patki
All Theses
A number of factors and accessories help save lives and prevent injuries to road users, yet safety belts have become synonymous with automobile safety today, unlike any accessory before or since their introduction in automobiles. However, the scientific advances in automobile safety, followed by the acceptance of the necessity for safety in automobiles by both the manufacturers and the population, finally leading to the introduction of safety features and their incorporation within the laws occurred over a much longer span, continuing even today. Today's Safety movement aims at increasing safety belt using an awareness campaigns, accompanied by enforcement. Safety belt …
Model For Light Scalars In Qcd, Joseph Schechter, Amir H. Fariborz, Renata Jora
Model For Light Scalars In Qcd, Joseph Schechter, Amir H. Fariborz, Renata Jora
Physics - All Scholarship
We propose a systematic procedure to study a generalized linear sigma model which can give a physical picture of possible mixing between q{\bar q} and qq{\bar q}{\bar q} low lying spin zero states. In the limit of zero quark masses, we derive the model independent results for the properties of the Nambu Goldstone pseudoscalar particles. For getting information on the scalars it is necessary to make a specific choice of terms. We impose two plausible physical criteria - the modeling of the axial anomaly and the suppression of effective vertices representing too many fermion lines - for limiting the large …

Becoming And Un-Becoming, Monica Zeringue
Becoming And Un-Becoming, Monica Zeringue
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
My work is about becoming and un-becoming. I seek to capture a time of transition and possibility. The pre-pubescent girls in my drawings are actually reduced versions of me, going back to a time of innocence and potential, and I multiply them as a means of selfexploration. They split apart, re-combine, and re-configure, trying to make a new whole. They are rendered with detailed accuracy, yet the world around them is empty, like a partially recalled memory. In this thesis, I will explore the use of the self-portrait, twinning, and re-configuration as they relate to identity, memory, and nostalgia. I …

Hoppin' Down The Bunny Trail: Behind The Banishment Of Walt Disney's Song Of The South In Search Of Uncle Remus, Michael Galiano
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
This study is an informative discussion on the history behind Walt Disney's film, Song of the South, based on the Uncle Remus tales originally written by Joel Chandler Harris, which will be addressed in Chapter One. Chapter Two elaborates on the methods within the vehicles of two distinct media versions in two different time periods as the problematic source of perception. Chapter Three relates why this is due to cultural sensitivities pertaining to the film and the suggested media guidelines by minority organizations that have gained power since the Civil Rights movement. Chapter Four discusses the historical data showing the …

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
The Internet is playing an increasingly crucial role in destination marketing and it is used as a major marketing tool among National Tourism Organizations (NTOs). Website design is influential for consumers' Website preference and destination selection. This study is to understand the application of image-based technology by the major National Tourism Organizations (NTOs) through the collection and comparison of static images and dynamic images presented in their official tourism Websites. Data collected from the sampling of the world's top 25 tourism destination nations reveals that all National Tourism Organizations (NTOs) use either static images or dynamic images for their Websites, …
(Re)Building Cultural, Community, And Academic Identity: Freshman Composition After Katrina, Russo Celeste Del
(Re)Building Cultural, Community, And Academic Identity: Freshman Composition After Katrina, Russo Celeste Del
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Composition studies has become increasingly focused on the connection between place, identity, and the act of writing, maintaining, as theorist Nedra Reynolds states, that “where writing instruction takes place has everything to do with how†(20). Considering the social, political, and cultural contexts of a post-Katrina Southeastern Louisiana, administrators and instructors at the University of New Orleans must begin to question how our freshmen writing program can best serve our students as they enter into the future of a "new" New Orleans. Implementing a "localized pedagogy" into the freshmen composition classroom--that is, a community-based pedagogy that draws from local resources, …

Fire & Flood: How The Lessons Of The Past Can Apply To The Present To Build The Future, Jared Munster
Fire & Flood: How The Lessons Of The Past Can Apply To The Present To Build The Future, Jared Munster
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
On August 29, 2005 the most destructive natural disaster to ever befall the United States made landfall initially near Buras, Louisiana and then ultimately near the mouth of the Pearl River. The associated storm surge caused New Orleans' protective levee system to fail, inundating the City with brackish floodwaters for weeks on end. This was not the first time the City of New Orleans was crippled by disaster. In 1788 and 1794, the city suffered two major fires; the first burning 856 buildings and the second 212. These were significant losses in a city that had a building stock of …

Sisters In Science: Conversations With Black Women Scientists On Race, Gender, And Their Passion For Science, Diann Jordan
Purdue University Press Books
Author Diann Jordan took a journey to find out what inspired and daunted black women in their desire to become scientists in America. Letting 18 prominent black women scientists talk for themselves, Sisters in Science becomes an oral history stretching across decades and disciplines and desires. From Yvonne Clark, the first black woman to be awarded a B.S. in mechanical engineering to Georgia Dunston, a microbiologist who is researching the genetic code for her race, to Shirley Jackson, whose aspiration led to the presidency of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Jordan has created a significant record of women who persevered to become …
Statistical Methods For Kinetic Modeling Of Fischer Tropsch Synthesis On A Supported Iron Catalyst, Brian L. Critchfield
Statistical Methods For Kinetic Modeling Of Fischer Tropsch Synthesis On A Supported Iron Catalyst, Brian L. Critchfield
Theses and Dissertations
Fischer-Tropsch Synthesis (FTS) is a promising technology for the production of ultra-clean fuels and chemical feedstocks from biomass, coal, or natural gas. Iron catalysts are ideal for conversion of coal and biomass. However, precipitated iron catalysts used in slurry-bubble column reactors suffer from high attrition resulting in difficulty separating catalysts from product and increased slurry viscosity. Thus, development of an active and selective-supported iron catalyst to manage attrition is needed. This thesis focuses on the development of a supported iron catalyst and kinetic models of FTS on the catalyst using advanced statistical methods for experimental design and analysis. A high …

Development In New Orleans East: Its Past, Present, And Future Potential, Newton Latronia Hill
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
This thesis will look into one of the largest geographic areas of economic development potential in New Orleans; the area known as New Orleans East. A look at its past will be explored as a gateway to the problems it has been faced with and why such large areas still remain unused. With the passing of Hurricane Katrina, New Orleans East suffered tremendous damages. A careful, yet creative look at revitalization in this area could produce economic wealth for the City. Various economic development strategies will be analyzed as a catalyst for generating economic growth for New Orleans East and …

Role Of The Cytoplasmic Domain In Anabaena Sensory Rhodopsin Photocycling: Vectoriality Of Schiff Base Deprotonation, Oleg A Sineshchekov, Elena N Spudich, Vishwa D Trivedi, John L Spudich
Faculty, Staff and Student Publications
Light-induced electric signals in intact E. coli cells generated by heterologously expressed full-length and C-terminally truncated versions of Anabaena sensory rhodopsin (ASR) demonstrate that the charge movements within the membrane-embedded part of the molecule are stringently controlled by the cytoplasmic domain. In particular, truncation inverts the direction of proton movement during Schiff base deprotonation from outward to cytoplasmic. Truncation also alters faster charge movements that occur before Schiff base deprotonation. Asp(217) as previously shown by FTIR serves as a proton acceptor in the truncated ASR but not in the full-length version, and its mutation to Asn restores the natural outward …

Of "Illustrators," "Narrators," "Editors," And "Readers": Describing Relations Between Significantly Disabled Students And Their Peers, Srikala Naraian
Dissertations
This paper interweaves several theoretical strands—disability studies, narrative theories, and sociocultural perspectives on learning—both as a means to understand current practice in the education of students with significant disabilities as well as to envisage other forms of participation for them. The aims of the study are derived from the argument made by Ferguson (2003) that the narratives of others in the lives of severely disabled individuals are critical to the formation of their identities. Appropriating this idea to the classroom, this study explores the notion that the narratives of classroom peers are vital to the participation of the severely disabled …
Restoring The Right Constitution?, Eduardo M. Peñalver
Restoring The Right Constitution?, Eduardo M. Peñalver
Cornell Law Faculty Publications
After years of relative neglect, the past few decades have witnessed a dramatic renewal of interest in the natural law tradition within philosophical circles. This natural law renaissance, however, has yet to bear much fruit within American constitutional discourse, especially among commentators on the left. In light of its low profile within contemporary constitutional debates, an effort to formulate a natural law constitutionalism is almost by definition an event worthy of sustained attention. In "Restoring the Lost Constitution," Randy Barnett draws heavily upon a natural law theory of constitutional legitimacy to argue in favor of a radically libertarian reading of …

Recruitment In Augsburg College's Theatre Arts Department, Bethany J. Bierman
Recruitment In Augsburg College's Theatre Arts Department, Bethany J. Bierman
Theses and Graduate Projects
Many factors influence a prospective college student's final college decision. As Augsburg College seeks to grow its theatre department, the question of what matters most to prospective theatre students is especially timely. This project seeks to answer the question, "'What factors make the largest impact in attracting and matriculating theatre majors to Augsburg College?" One-on-one interviews were conducted with current Augsburg theatre students. These in-depth conversations provided insight into the effectiveness of various recruiting methods and identified untapped recruitment opportunities. The research confirmed that the theatre department's early, deliberate, and multi-faceted recruitment strategies directly impact students' interest in and decision …
