Cinematic Scripture: The Structure And Usage Of The Lord Of The Rings As Equipment For Living, Brent Yergensen Jan 2006

Cinematic Scripture: The Structure And Usage Of The Lord Of The Rings As Equipment For Living, Brent Yergensen

Masters Theses

This project argues that film has the capacity to function as cinematic scripture for Christian audiences. Cinematic scripture means that films are authoritative for audiences the same way that written scripture is. In The Lord of the Rings film trilogy, this new form of scripture works as equipment for living by encouraging Christian audiences to go to war against evil through the structure of the film's biblical themes of bifurcation, redemption, and millennialism. This culmination of the rhetorical vision of war comes from three fantasy themes that emerge when Christian Internet writers describe how they use the films: repentance, strength, …

Critical Pedagogy As A Practice In Student Affairs: A Trio Media Literacy Program, Bettina T. Becker Jan 2006

Critical Pedagogy As A Practice In Student Affairs: A Trio Media Literacy Program, Bettina T. Becker

Masters Theses

This study discusses the impact a critical pedagogy approach may provide for Student Affairs programming. On the one hand, pedagogical theories are often relegated to the classroom proper. On the other hand, despite the fact that Student Affairs programming is often seen froma developmental perspective, the intricacies of a pedagogy are just as often neglected. Critical pedagogy with its focus on valuing student experiences, critical readings of popular texts, and the deconstruction of pervasive public discourses may provide a valuable foundation for Student Affairs programming, thus integrating theory and practice and bridging the gap between Academic and Student Affairs.

Voices From Two Sides Of The Atlantic: A Multiple Case Study Of Women's Leadership, Eva Anneli Adams

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

People learn and adopt cultural values through socialization. "Voices from Two Sides of the Atlantic" is a multiple-case study about the influence of national socialization on women's leadership experiences. The main research question of the study was: Does national enculturation impact how women lead, and if so, how is it reflected in participants' responses?;This study examined leadership experiences of three Finnish and three American women. It investigated how the participants associate their values with their leadership experience and how they perceive the social context in which they grew up influences leadership. The theoretical framework of the study was based on …

Violent Women In Film And The Sociological Relevance Of The Contemporary Action Heroine, Kathryn A Gilpatric Jan 2006

Violent Women In Film And The Sociological Relevance Of The Contemporary Action Heroine, Kathryn A Gilpatric

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This research examines mainstream representations and imagery of violent women in American cinema in a broad sense, and looks more specifically at the sociological relevance of the contemporary filmic action heroine. This research is not interpretive in nature but instead draws upon original data gained from an extensive content analysis spanning a 15-year period from 1991 to 2005. In addition, the research includes secondary source data gathered from movie industry statistics and industry reports in order to provide an empirically descriptive analysis of violent female action characters in contemporary American film; While many feminist film theorists argue that female action …

Shopping Motivations And Their Influence On Shopping Experience In Australia And Indonesia, Tjong Budisantoso

Theses

The main focus of this study is on motivation. In particular, the study aims to investigate the relationship between the in-store experience of shoppers and their motivation for shopping. The in-store experience as defined in this study includes the perception of store atmosphere and cognitive responses. Another interest of the study is to test the relationship between cognitive responses and store atmosphere in two different countries. Lastly, this study explores the relationship between in-store experience and store patronage satisfaction, which in turn can influence shoppers’ repatronage intention. All the hypotheses in this study have been tested in Perth, Australia and …

Introduction To Volume 56 Jan 2006

Introduction To Volume 56

Russian Language Journal

In his recent study of the linkage between corpus and status planning in language policy formation, Joshua Fishman observes that “languages are increasingly viewed as scarce national resources (not unlike flora and fauna, agricultural or environmental resources, and all other such improvable or alterable resources whose quality can be influenced by planned human intervention).” Given the particular history of language policy development in Russia and the former Soviet states in the 20th century, the appearance in mid-2005 of the new Law on the State Language of the Russian Federation is an event of considerable potential impact on the study and …

Parenting And Peer-Group Behavior In Cultural Context, David A. Nelson, Larry J. Nelson, Craig H. Hart, Chongming Yang, Shenghua Jin Jan 2006

Parenting And Peer-Group Behavior In Cultural Context, David A. Nelson, Larry J. Nelson, Craig H. Hart, Chongming Yang, Shenghua Jin

Faculty Publications

© Cambridge University Press 2006 and Cambridge University Press, 2009. Whether specific patterns of parenting are similarly associated with child peer group behavior in diverse cultural contexts has been a fascinating topic of inquiry. From classic anthropological studies dating back to the early twentieth century to the current interest in cross-cultural studies, knowledge concerning the question of universality and cultural variation in parenting linkages to childhood adjustment has expanded at an unprecedented rate (e.g., Harkness & Super, 2002). As the general field of parenting research has uncovered distinctions in parenting styles and practices (e.g., Darling & Steinberg, 1993; Hart, Newell, …

Relations Between Chinese Mothers' Parenting Practices And Social Withdrawal In Early Childhood, Larry J. Nelson, Craig H. Hart, Bo Wu, Chongming Yang, Susanne Olsen Roper, Shenghua Jin

Faculty Publications

Researchers have identified specific parenting practices used by parents of preschoolers in mainland China (e.g., physical coercion, overprotection, shaming, directiveness, encouragement of modesty). Some of the intrusive practices have been linked to social withdrawal in western societies (e.g., United States, Canada). It seemed important to examine these associations in China because recent research suggests that young Chinese children who exhibit wariness in peer settings may be at risk for negative outcomes such as peer rejection. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to examine the relation between Chinese parenting practices and preschoolers' social withdrawal. Mothers of preschool-age children from mainland …

Human Genomic Deletions Mediated By Recombination Between Alu Elements, Shurjo K. Sen, Kyudong Han, Jianxin Wang, Jungnam Lee, Hui Wang, Pauline A. Callinan, Matthew Dyer, Richard Cordaux, Ping Liang, Mark A. Batzer Jan 2006

Human Genomic Deletions Mediated By Recombination Between Alu Elements, Shurjo K. Sen, Kyudong Han, Jianxin Wang, Jungnam Lee, Hui Wang, Pauline A. Callinan, Matthew Dyer, Richard Cordaux, Ping Liang, Mark A. Batzer

Faculty Publications

Recombination between Alu elements results in genomic deletions associated with many human genetic disorders. Here, we compare the reference human and chimpanzee genomes to determine the magnitude of this recombination process in the human lineage since the human-chimpanzee divergence ∼6 million years ago. Combining computational data mining and wet-bench experimental verification, we identified 492 human-specific deletions (for a total of ∼400 kb) attributable to this process, a significant component of the insertion/deletion spectrum of the human genome. The majority of the deletions (295 of 492) coincide with known or predicted genes (including 3 that deleted functional exons, as compared with …

Deconstructing The Frame: Siting Absence, Jason Wallin Jan 2006

Deconstructing The Frame: Siting Absence, Jason Wallin

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education

Our contemporary social landscape is increasingly inscribed and articulated through images. With the proliferation of televisual mediums, the image has become the primary vehicle mediating social relationships, impinging on our experience of both self and other (Debord, 1978). As Virilio (2002) avers, the drive of capitalism seeks to appropriate the imagistic code as a bid for mastery over the symbolic order. In this manner, the media/ted images that flood the social terrain are often cites of ideological del sign. In other words, signs are often ideologically 'stabilized' as connotations of other signs, forming an abstract, positive calculus of signification. In …

Temperature Effects On Bradyrhizobium Spp. Growth And Symbiotic Effectiveness With Pigeonpea And Cowpea, Lurline E. Marsh, Raymond Baptiste, Dyremple B. Marsh, David Trinklein, Robert J. Kremer Jan 2006

Temperature Effects On Bradyrhizobium Spp. Growth And Symbiotic Effectiveness With Pigeonpea And Cowpea, Lurline E. Marsh, Raymond Baptiste, Dyremple B. Marsh, David Trinklein, Robert J. Kremer

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Temperature is a limiting factor on legume-Bradyrhizobium symbiosis of subtropical plants in the temperate region. Twelve strains of Bradyrhizobium spp. that nodulate pigeonpea [Cajanus cajan (L.) Millsp], and cowpea [Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp], were evaluated for tolerance to three temperature regimes (20 °C/10 °C, 30 °C/20 °C, and 38 °C/25 °C day/night temperature) by determining their growth following exposure to the regimes. The five most temperature-tolerant strains were further evaluated for symbiotic effectiveness with pigeonpea and cowpea under controlled temperatures. These strains were USDA 3278, USDA 3362, USDA 3364, USDA 3458, and USDA 3472. Plant heights of …

Performance Art As A Site For Learning: Queer Theory And Performance Studies In The Art Classroom, G. E. Washington Jan 2006

Performance Art As A Site For Learning: Queer Theory And Performance Studies In The Art Classroom, G. E. Washington

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education

Today, performance art is one of the most useful mediums for helping individuals see themselves differently. In this of "Out of sight" article, I explore the experience of participating in a student's performance art project. This work was a performance of crossing the road. Here, I discuss the inclusion of overtly queer articulations of personal experience within the art classroom. How can performance art construct learning experiences that engage a dynamic process of self-critique? How are classrooms organized differently when students become actively involved in the development of the art curriculum? And, how might a performative investigation of the sociality …

The Mystery Of Dr. Who? On A Road Less Traveled In Art Education, R. Michael Fisher, Barbara Bickel

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education

This article is a 'fun' puzzle (and quiz) to solve. Please do not look to the next pages ahead, or the mystery of Dr. Who will be spoiled. We have recently discovered an intriguing art educator "out of the blue," whose work is largely out of cite/sight in most art education circles today. We want to bring Dr. Who's 'spirit' and work back to life and teach others some of what we have been learning in the past six months of intense research. The two metaphors we utilize (puzzle/ game and invoking a specter) are not without their sociopolitical power …
