Reading Chinese Fortune Cookie: The Making Of Chinese American Rhetoric, Luming Mao Jan 2006

Reading Chinese Fortune Cookie: The Making Of Chinese American Rhetoric, Luming Mao

All USU Press Publications

LuMing Mao offers an important discussion of the rhetoric of Chinese American speakers, which has wide implications for the teaching of writing in English and for our understanding of cross-cultural influences in discourse. Recent scholarship tends to explain such influences as contributing to language hybridity—an advance over the traditional "deficit model." But Mao suggests that the "hybridity" approach is perhaps too arid or sanitized, missing rich nuances of mutual exchange, resistance, or even subversion. Through his concept of "togetherness in difference, Mao suggests that speakers of hybrid discourse may not be attempting the standard (and failing), but instead may be …

‘Poster Meets Innis: Poststructuralism And The Possibility Of Political Economy’, Robert Babe, Edward Comor Jan 2006

‘Poster Meets Innis: Poststructuralism And The Possibility Of Political Economy’, Robert Babe, Edward Comor

FIMS Publications

This is the fifth and final column in the Topia series exploring intersections between political economy and cultural studies. The column in Topia 15 (Babe 2006: 91-101) documents the tendency on the part of mainstream American communication/media scholars—from John Dewey in the first decades of the 20th century to postmodernist writers of today—to obscure to the vanishing point concerns and methods of political economy. The earlier column suggests that “readers should scrutinize carefully the writings of contemporary poststructuralist/postmodernist authoritative figures to determine just where they stand on issues of political economy” (98). That is precisely what we do here: we …

Into The Vortex: The Cultural Politics Of Eliot, Woolf, Lewis, And Pound, 1914-1939, Anderson D. Araujo Jan 2006

Into The Vortex: The Cultural Politics Of Eliot, Woolf, Lewis, And Pound, 1914-1939, Anderson D. Araujo

Digitized Theses

Aesthetic modernism’s discourse of culture notoriously entrammeled itself in radical conservative politics in the interwar years. Engaging modernism as a historical and cultural phenomenon, this study examines key interventions in cultural discourse by T.S. Eliot, Virginia Woolf, Wyndham Lewis and Ezra Pound. The Introduction explores the intermingling of power and culture encoded in German Kulturkritik. Chapter One situates the contested dialogue between Vorticism and Italian Futurism as foundational for the modernist cultural politics that emerged in the avant guerre. Chapter Two discusses Eliot’s Christian-informed attempt to generate a creative dialogue between religious, cultural and political forces in After Strange Gods …

How Does Increasing Population And Diversity Affect Resident Satisfaction? A Small Community Case Study, James J. Potter, Rodrigo Cantarero

Architecture Program: Faculty Scholarly and Creative Activity

This study examines the quality of life in Crete, Nebraska, with the specific purpose of identifying the factors that play the largest role in determining residential satisfaction. The survey asks a number of questions pertaining to different aspects of living in Crete. The survey is adapted from a survey previously used for a similar study in Schuyler, Nebraska. Focus groups are used to identify key issues in Crete and make adjustments to the questionnaire. Cronbach’s alpha is used to test the reliability of the topical variables, and index variables are created, which are used in the subsequent analysis. Using residential …

Capital Speculations: Writing And Building Washington, D.C., Sarah Luria Jan 2006

Capital Speculations: Writing And Building Washington, D.C., Sarah Luria

University of New Hampshire Press: Open Access Books

In this lively study, Sarah Luria pursues the vital political connection between architecture and literature in the formation in 1791 of America's grand new capital city. City planners believed that designing Washington, D.C. as a physical model of the Constitution and its balance of powers would help citizens bond with the newly created nation. Although wildly ambitious, this design was made feasible through financial speculation. Dazzled by the plans for an "American Rome," citizens would buy up its empty lots and make the nation's capital their home. Luria demonstrates how political and financial speculation combined to build Washington and, once …

Women's Body Image, Patriarchy, And Photography: A Pictorial Content Analysis Of National Geographic's Representation Of Women., Kathryn D. Newhouse Jan 2006

Women's Body Image, Patriarchy, And Photography: A Pictorial Content Analysis Of National Geographic's Representation Of Women., Kathryn D. Newhouse

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Women have been depicted within media outlets such as magazines as domestic caretakers for generations. While history has at times been positive in its representation of women, especially during World War II and the government’s plea for women to work in industry, the vast majority of media outlets after the war again created the housewife image from the years before the war for women to follow. The popular governmental posters with “Rosie the Riveter” stating, “We Can Do It!” were replaced with images of a happy wife tending house for her husband fresh from the war. While the posters were …

Atanarjuat And The Ideological Work Of Contemporary Indigenous Filmmaking, Monika Siebert Jan 2006

Atanarjuat And The Ideological Work Of Contemporary Indigenous Filmmaking, Monika Siebert

English Faculty Publications

Ilanaaq is the latest North American example of “playing Indian” (Deloria 1998), a practice with vast historical precedent. With ilanaaq, Canada joins a host of nations who have turned to symbols of local indigeneity to assert their national distinctiveness. Such appropriation presents indigenous artists with a dilemma. The current flowering of indigenous letters, art and cinema in North America is generally taken as evidence that Canada and the United States, as thriving multiculturalist democracies, have broken with an earlier history of the expropriation and displacement of the Americas’ indigenous peoples. The art bears witness to a new historical period, in …

Tmem27: A Cleaved And Shed Plasma Membrane Protein That Stimulates Pancreatic Beta Cell Proliferation, Pinar Akpinar Jan 2006

Tmem27: A Cleaved And Shed Plasma Membrane Protein That Stimulates Pancreatic Beta Cell Proliferation, Pinar Akpinar

Student Theses and Dissertations

The signals and the molecular mechanisms that regulate the replication of terminally differentiated β cells are unclear. In this thesis I report the identification of a gene encoding transmembrane protein 27 (TMEM27) in pancreatic β cells. Expression of Tmem27 is reduced in Tcf1-/- mice, which exhibit defects in proliferation, and is increased in islets of ob/ob, db/db and aP2- Srebp-1c transgenic mice with marked hypertrophy of the endocrine pancreas. Tmem27 is expressed in hormone positive cells at early stages of pancreas development and becomes restricted to pancreatic β cells in the mature pancreas. Biochemical characterization revealed that the Tmem27 exists …

Multimodality And English Education In Ugandan Schools, Maureen Kendrick, Shelley Jones, Harriet Mutonyi, Bonny Norton Jan 2006

Multimodality And English Education In Ugandan Schools, Maureen Kendrick, Shelley Jones, Harriet Mutonyi, Bonny Norton

Institute for Educational Development, East Africa

In this article, we have made the case that multimodal pedagogies that include drawing, photography and drama have significant potential for enhancing teachers’ understanding of the way English is incorporated into students’ lives and how students can improve their understanding and use of the English language. In many ways, multimodal pedagogies represent a hybridization of indigenous and contemporary forms of communication. Drawings, as Vygotsky (1 12-1 13) notes, are children’s earliest representations of experience and stimulate their narrative impulse to create stories. By complementing such drawings with written narratives, teachers might encourage younger children to experiment not only with diverse …

Review Essay: 'Seeing Beyond The Limits Of International Law,' Jack L. Goldsmith And Eric A. Posner, 'The Limits Of International Law', Paul Schiff Berman Jan 2006

Review Essay: 'Seeing Beyond The Limits Of International Law,' Jack L. Goldsmith And Eric A. Posner, 'The Limits Of International Law', Paul Schiff Berman

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

In 'The Limits of International Law,' Jack Goldsmith and Eric Posner use the simplifying assumptions of rational choice theory in an attempt to demonstrate that international law has no independent valence whatsoever. Rather, according to the authors, each state single-mindedly pursues its own rational interest and obeys international legal norms only to the extent that such norms serve those pre-existing interests. In this Review Essay, I argue that their vision of international law is deeply flawed. In particular, I take issue with the authors' assumption that states simply have pre-existing unitary interests that they then rationally pursue. First, I argue …

Anaerobic Redox Cycling Of Iron By Freshwater Sediment Microorganisms, Karrie A. Weber, Matilde M. Urrutia, Perry F. Churchill, Ravi K. Kukkadapu, Eric E. Roden Jan 2006

Anaerobic Redox Cycling Of Iron By Freshwater Sediment Microorganisms, Karrie A. Weber, Matilde M. Urrutia, Perry F. Churchill, Ravi K. Kukkadapu, Eric E. Roden

School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

The potential for microbially mediated anaerobic redox cycling of iron (Fe) was examined in a first-generation enrichment culture of freshwater wetland sediment microorganisms. Most probable number enumerations revealed the presence of significant populations of Fe(III)-reducing (approximately 108 cells ml-1 ) and Fe(II)-oxidizing, nitrate-reducing organisms (approximately 105 cells ml-1 ) in the freshwater sediment used to inoculate the enrichment cultures. Nitrate reduction commenced immediately following inoculation of acetate-containing (approximately 1 mM) medium with a small quantity (1% v/v) of wetland sediment, and resulted in the transient accumulation of NO2– and production of a mixture of …

Learning Communities And The Future Of The Humanities, Phyllis E. Vanslyck Jan 2006

Learning Communities And The Future Of The Humanities, Phyllis E. Vanslyck

Publications and Research

According to Profession's 2005 Presidential Forum, one reason for dwindling enrollment in the Humanities is lack of interdisciplinarity. Learning communities, courses clustered around a common theme and taught to the same group of students are a powerful example of a kind of interdisciplinarity that is flourishing on more than five-hundred campuses in the United States. This essay looks closely at the expanding learning community movement and its relevance to revitalizing the Humanities.

Atmospheric Volatile Organic Compound Measurements: Distributions And Effects On Air Quality In Coastal Marine, Rural And Remote Continental Environments, Yong Zhou Jan 2006

Atmospheric Volatile Organic Compound Measurements: Distributions And Effects On Air Quality In Coastal Marine, Rural And Remote Continental Environments, Yong Zhou

Doctoral Dissertations

A detailed description of the analytical methods employed for whole air sampling and analysis of atmospheric volatile organic compounds is presented. The system described in this thesis produced high precision measurements for a large suite of nonmethane hydrocarbons, halocarbons, and alkyl nitrates, from part per billion by volume (ppbv) to part per trillion by volume (pptv) levels. The measurement precision for most gases ranged from 1-10%.

Results from two subsequent field campaigns (2002 and 2003) conducted in Yellowstone National Park (YNP) are presented. The findings indicate that 2-stroke snowmobile engine emissions furnish large quantities of air toxics to the YNP …

First Person Perspectives Of The Impact Of Segregation And The Civil Rights Movement On Southern White Racism, Jeff Dockswell Jan 2006

First Person Perspectives Of The Impact Of Segregation And The Civil Rights Movement On Southern White Racism, Jeff Dockswell

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s and 1970s profoundly changed the lives of many young southern White citizens. Southern racism was a product of traditional indoctrination common in the culture of the Old South. During the generations after slavery to the Civil Rights Era, vulnerable White children were typically exposed to racist and prejudiced influences from families, fellow citizens, education, popular culture, and segregation laws established within their communities. The Civil Rights Movement brought forth elaborate legal reforms that broke segregation and enabled integration programs to take place at schools and other public institutions, which ultimately expanded many southerners' …
