Transisi Budaya Di Bali Dalam Novel Jerman: Wayan Zwischen Drogen Und D Monen, Lilawati Kurnia

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

Europe has been interested in Indonesia for many centuries ago. The Dutch Government and the East-Indies Company (VOC), for example, already established the connection between Indonesian and German along with the colonization when the VOC brought the German Regiment to the islands of Indonesia. Nevertheless, this relationship was not in a friendly way but was the power one. German also adopted the domination of the colony by the Dutch. Bali as the foremost attraction for the Europe since the 19th century has become a place of destination to the western tourists in the 20th century. The transition of Balinese culture …

Valuing Cultural Differences In Behavioral Economics, Justin D. Levinson, Kaiping Peng Apr 2006

Valuing Cultural Differences In Behavioral Economics, Justin D. Levinson, Kaiping Peng

ExpressO

Behavioral economic research has tended to ignore the role of cultural differences in economic decision-making. The authors suggest that a systematic bias affects existing behavioral economic theory-- cognitive biases are often assumed to be universal. To examine how cultural background informs economic decision-making, and to test framing effects, morality effects, and out-group effects in a cross-cultural study, the authors conducted an experiment in the United States and China. The experiment was designed to test cultural and cognitive effects on a fundamental economic phenomenon-- how people estimate the financial values of objects over time.

Results of the experiment demonstrated dramatic cultural …

Playing For An Active Community: Sports Participation And Civic Engagement, Ian E. Ritz Apr 2006

Playing For An Active Community: Sports Participation And Civic Engagement, Ian E. Ritz

Sociology Honors Projects

Research on civic engagement in associations posits benefits at various levels in society. Critical perspective holds that sports may alternately teach positive social behaviors while reinforcing discriminatory stereotypes in its participants. The research question becomes, does participation in youth sports actually lead to civic engagement later in life? Using a longitudinal data set, I find that after controlling for other factors, there still is an indirect positive correlation between team sports participation and volunteering as a young adult. Analysis indicates that sports participation as an adolescent significantly accounts for sports participation as a young adult which in turn, influences volunteering.

Mediated Identification, D T. Shaw Apr 2006

Mediated Identification, D T. Shaw

Australian Information Warfare and Security Conference

Identity and identification are linked by variable meanings and applications and are essential in many remote transactions. Identification relying on mediation or third party intervention may be modified or withdrawn at will. Creating or reestablishing identity may require time and resources including artefacts such as the identity card usually sourced from a third party. The characteristics of the identification process and artefacts are discussed and the requirements of usermediated identification artefacts are explored. The implicit link between user identity and artefact identity may be broken under certain circumstances.

Stormtroopers Among Us: Star Wars Costuming, Connection, And Civic Engagement, Dava L. Simpson Apr 2006

Stormtroopers Among Us: Star Wars Costuming, Connection, And Civic Engagement, Dava L. Simpson

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study is to examine the bonds that form between people as consumers of popular visual media and to discuss the relationship and impact of the resulting subcultures on the larger culture. Star Wars costumers offer a magnified glance at some of the ways in which people engage with images. As reflections of popular culture, costumers display their textual devotions and opinions; they embody spectatorship by reincarnating their favorite characters and contexts from text-bound sources. Moreover, they embrace modes of visual representation by performing the roles of both image consumer and image producer. I strive to understand …
